The Producer / DJ who honed a craft in sample twisted acid and breaks, drops their first solo release since 2018. A friendly face pushing the local scene with an impressive output of heavily chaptered synth jams.

The lead track “Earthling” sets a welcome signal with a low key wiggle, chopped drums and pinching acid lines ahead of the title tune “Planet Rhythm X” on the A2, which shifts to a 4x4 launch pad and countdown. “The Land Of The Never Ending Jazz” opens the B side with a superb 9 minute exploration of playful melodies and jazz keys, with a classy twirl. Banoffee Pies Original series continues with a long overdue welcome to the label for Xades (pronounced shades), the Berlin based Artist, Producer, Vocalist, already known under her DJ moniker MSJY. The Femme Bass Mafia co-founder operating for the last 8 years across Europe, with a previous residency at Amsterdam’s De School Club, and further affiliations with the likes of Dekmantel and OOST. As Jenny’s career and musical output continues to flourish, the Xades project sets the foundations as a space for measured sonic reflection, and acts as a portal to connect  to their surroundings under a lens of sensitivity.

Original production “Qlu” gives us a taste of the dynamic, sharp and playful spectrum of sounds that culminate in a uniquely euphoric composition with the perfect touch of dub tinged electronica.

Two remixes take opposing directions, with an intricately chaptered bass weight twist from sound design enthusiast /  Body Verse founder Kate Miller, and a hybrid rhythmic club cut from recently affiliated label signing Syz. BPR x

As the label pushes towards the age of three, this compilation marks an important time and welcomes appearances from recent affiliate Jon Sable with a dip into future transport melodies featuring Kroba of the brilliant Archie Pelago, and Seb Wildblood’s Coconut Oil on the A side. The flip brings sample heavy Weird Love from Matt Saint Will and a drum theme from the talented Marenn Sukie. Tell closes up with a Beats inspired downtempo lounge mover.

Limited Series 06 drops on Banoffee Pies Records. This time with some saucy Pink legs showcasing a predominantly Bristol based representative of Leftfield House and UK inspired productions from Jazz to Electro and 2 step.  

Gallegos’ “Save Your Love For Me” quickly engages  your focus with melody rich tones and enticing vocals pushing on to an interestingly themed A side with the electro infused “Hanging Gardens” from local Seka,  and the complex drum patterns of 2 step themed “Dreams” from Jay Anderson, another artist to recently join the labels affiliates with an appearance on the second Banoffee Pies Black Label imprint. 

The B side is pleasantly introduced by a more head nodding groove full of pads from Owain K with “Touched “, and as with many of it’s predecessors, this Limited Series installation is rounded off with a Beat and a mood from a smoky lounge this time from Embezzlement Society. Banoffee Pies Records release their 10th edition to the Original Series with “Move Tools”. One of many channels within the BPR umbrella which dedicates itself more closely to left field dance floor cuts, this time in the form of a solo EP from production master Interplanetary Criminal. The 4 track collection hosts three UKG delights which are bound to disrupt dance floors all over with their weighty UK feel and extreme sub workouts. The other tracks come as a tried and tested DJ Tool “Move” on the A2 which comedically slips between a joyous disco sample and a bruising 4x4 laser beat. For the 2nd instalment of the mix series which focuses on those “sunday energy vibes” with UKG - we have a takeover from one of our favourite labels. Their Bandcamp description describes their direction perfectly - “Creativity without order. A platform for music with no signature sound - for the lovers and the listeners.” Their output since they started just shows their versatility of the label itself with a wide range of sounds from jazz to house to breakbeat. You name it. 

Words by Eli - “I started this mix with some more 4/4 techy-house sounds before slipping into the garage flavours. It’s the first time i’ve contributed to a UKG channel so it was a pleasure putting together some favourites, some unreleased bits from friends, and a few shameless bangers from Mike Millrain just for good measure. Here’s my sunday dim sum recipe, had a lot of fun recording it and it came together in the first take so that’s always nice. Strictly steppers and blastoise. much love, ell x

When Ell’s not dishing out the sweet treats or cradling his cats he’s obviously finding that perfect balance somewhere in between house, techno and steppers which we hear in his podcast and throughout his wonderfully curated Banoffee Pies imprint.

NSP005 - DJ Autumn (Banoffee Pies)

DJ Autumn (@autumn-bpr) plays various pivotal roles in the UK dance music scene. Firstly, he is label manager at Banoffee Pies Records. It's a buy on sight imprint and network of various sub-labels such as Otaku, Beats, Limited Series and the ambient Sonder Series that plots an always tasteful path between broken beat, garage and minimal clubs sounds from cutting edge artists. Those sounds also characterise his own DJ sets and radio shows everywhere from Worldwide FM to NTS to the BBC. From high tempo intensity to tripped out atmospherics,  he's an ever present vibesman who also founded his own Headroom Festival in 2019.

His mix for us this week is a stripped back and dubbed out winter warmer. Always oozing a sense of cool and control, it builds through the most cavernous of bass spaces and icy sci-fi sonics towards a skeletal jungle workout that gets you on your toes. The sounds are always rich and soulful so pull you deep into a comforting musical world. And we can all make time for that right now.
