They say if you want something done, give it to a busy person. 

Good job no one told Roel Salemink. Little did he know he would later become a number one Beatport artist when he decided that the best way to get his music noticed was to make things happen for himself. And so, despite having precisely zero releases to his name, Salemink was soon hosting his own regular event: Magnifique – sharing the stage with luminary names like Secret Cinema, Bart Skills and Marco Bailey. 

For his latest release, Salemink teams up once again with fraternal tech house duo Arnd and Daniel Reichow, aka Drumcomplex. In their twenty year career, they have been released by the likes of MB Elektronics, Phobiq, Different Is Different and Toolroom. So what of the collaboration? 

Much like Salemink’s debut release ‘Manalive’, which spent eight solid weeks at the top of the Beatport chart, ‘The Box’ EP bears the hallmarks of a classic. The measured songwriting and production subtleties of the title track will curry little favour with those looking for an instant techno sugar rush. But then who is these days? This is careful songcraft endowed with hypnotic rubber-band rhythms and an impressive slow burn. ‘Toxic’ meanwhile packs a heavier punch with harsh, industrial percussive sounds before deferring to the most compelling two-note synth riff you will hear this year. 

On remix duty is tech house favourite and former Baptism-released artist Alex Di Stefano. His remix of ‘The Box’ takes Drumcomplex & Salemink’s songwriting subtleties and transforms them into monster synth lines and ruthlessly immersive percussive elements. It’s a floor filler in waiting and should put all crowd-pleasing DJs on red alert. 

With subtle songcraft, surgically precise production and a healthy helping of good old fashioned flair, Drumcomplex & Roel Salemink prove that if it’s progressive techno you are looking for, there really is no need to think outside ‘The Box’.

The Metaprogram is the side project of Pierre Meneaud who hails from Melbourne, Australia. He is also a partner with SoundKraft Records and while he is not saving a small village in the amazon from a scourge of fire-ants he is deep within the spirit of metaprogramming. He hopes to offer you a small glimpse into the programs which build our cultures, our personalities, and our selves. The programs may be genetic, linguistic, legal, mathematical, mythical, digital, symbolic, quantum, cosmic, or all-pervasive. It doesn't really matter. The first step is just realizing that the programs exist; learning how to rewrite them and use them to your advantage is the work of a lifetime. It is truly an art ‚ of the highest there is. When you write your own code, you begin to alter the fabric of reality itself. Besides, people will never stop telling you what to do, what to think, how to act, what you can and can't do... In fact, it would be easy to spend the rest of your life running code that was written by somebody else- but is that any way to live? If you want to have an impact in the world, start writing your own program while there's still time! And keep rewriting it! Every program needs an occasional tweak, reinforcement, or upgrade; but with the right tools and a little practice, you'll get the job done in no time!

Baptism is an established imprint born from a love of electronic music, pure and simple. As the name suggests, this is the first foray into label management for the three inseparable friends behind it, but that’s not to say it won’t kick it with the big dogs given the experiences and talents of those involved…

The plan for the digital outlet is a complete one, with focus on branding, relationships and quality as much as the music itself and the quantity of releases. Mixing up productions from established names and newbies alike, tracks and remixes from Phunk Investigation, Stefano Noferini, Spektre, Alex D’Elia & Nihil Young and Kernel Key can all be expected in the first few months following the initial Baptism from Alex Di Stefano, namely ‘Phase One’ featuring a remix from Dutch specialist Koen Groeneveld.

“We are focusing on most aspects of techno but have a penchant for the dark driving kind” say the triumvirate of music lovers behind this new project.

“Sooo many start-up labels go into it without investing in branding, decent A&R and so on that they’re quickly lost in the mire. We’ve invested and signed some brilliant tracks and have remixes from some of the current names we’re feeling, so we hope we can stand ourselves apart in time.”

Baptism is a rite of admission into a certain religion, but Baptism is an entry point into a world of tastemaker techno… welcome on board.
