John Tejada Remix | DHI | Premiere

Melodic house and techno newcomers APNOEA continue to make waves with a superb offering on Stripped Down that comes backed with a John Tejada remix.

This German duo only debuted on the legendary Mobilee Records in spring 2021, but immediately turned plenty of heads. They have a combined 40 years of experience in the studio that has given rise to big solo projects on Noir Music, Get Physical, Last Night on Earth and many other labels. They remixed Timo Maas on Stripped Down earlier in the year, and their full debut on the label showcases a richly layered and emotive sound across two superb tunes.

They open up with the excellent 'Phnk,' a deep roller with twitchy synths and slick claps. As the synths grow in energy, you're lifted off your feet and transported to the stars on a smooth and seductive house groove.

'Wormhole' is just as well crafted and hypnotic, this time with more edgy synth motifs looping above pinging kick drums. There is tension in the bleeping keys and turbulent bass that makes for added drama as the eight-minute trip unfolds.

Remixer and LA-based artist John Tejada is a long-time tech house mainstay. His famously pristine, well-crafted sounds have landed him on labels like Kompakt and Cocoon and made him one of the scene's most consistent performers. Here he flips 'Phnk' into a sublime track built on clean breakbeats, with rich melodic patterns and lively bass all working to suspend you above the dancefloor.

This is another stylish statement from this fast-rising duo.

Nolan spoke about how the release came together, describing how: “Davide and I haven’t actually met in person, but we’ve created a few monster tracks together. He sent a few projects to me when I was in Brighton and I ripped out the rawest sounds to start turning them into tracks. We decided Drive Good was ready for some top line vocals from Jaw, who took the track to a whole other level.”

DJ and producer Davide Squillace has achieved a lot in his career as resident of the famed Circoloco and part of the supergroup Better Lost Than Stupid with Matthias Tanzmann and Martin Buttrich. He is also expanding on his production repertoire with releases on the likes of Cadenza, Kaoz Theory, No19, Moon Harbour and Hot Creations. Straddling house, disco, breaks and prog with a unique twist and an eye for the underground, Nolan is making serious waves with key releases on Mobilee, LNOE, Bedrock, Circus, Kittball, MadTech, Crew Love, Get Physical, OFF, Gruuv & Connaisseur Recordings.

French singer-songwriter Jaw is a prolific vocalist in electronic music, making regular appearances on Set About, BluFin and many more besides. 

Michigan-favourite Rick Wade has been a leading figure in Detroit house for decades, having been active as a producer since 1994. His music has found a welcome home on Shall Not Fade and Open Sound in recent times, a testament to his keen-ear for production.

The 58th release on Sound Avenue finds Madloch and Matias Vila presenting their second collaborative project. Hailing from Belgium and Spain respectively the duo crafted one of 2014's most intriguing productions in 'Reading Souls'. The 12 minute opus then eventually received remixes from James Teej and Nikko.Z, which were a staple in the sets of many DJs as 2015 began. Now as the year is quickly drawing to a close Madloch and Matias present the long awaited follow-up entitled 'Haze Over Night', alongside remixes from Roger Martinez and Eyal Cohen.
After one listen to the duos first collaboration is was abundantly clear their cross pollination of sounds was a fruitful one. On 'Haze Over Night' we get something equally exciting with a wealth of fresh designs and tonal qualities to drool over. Backed by thick slabs of rolling bass it doesn't take long for 'Haze Over Night' to carry an enormous presence. Dubby synth work combined with trippy designs and rising white noise build momentum over the first act, before eventually initiating the main break. Waves of melodious bass, indistinct vocals and a collage of psychedelic designs paint a gorgeous sonic landscape, before the beats eventually drop back in for that ultimate 3AM moment. Another massive production from Madloch and Matias.

The first interpretation of 'Haze Over Night' is provided by Roger Martinez who is making his first appearance on Sound Avenue. The Dutch producer and long time member of the GEM Records family presented one of 2015's best compositions in 'Downriver'. Released in June on Guy J's Lost and Found Records, the cross-cultural techno bomb enjoyed a ride of immense hype, since becoming a staple of Guy's sets several months prior to its release. There are few producer's working in the underground today with Roger's creativity and unique production hallmarks, all of which are on display here, with his 'Haze Over Night' interpretation. Anchored by a chunky, well carved foundation Roger's remix is immediately alluring. As the groove begins to take shape a storyboard of psychedelic audio tantalizes the senses, all while building a lovely dramatic flow. There's a soulful essence that's hard to come by in electronic music but Roger's crafted that in excess here. Following an engaging first act, an otherworldly break culminates with an expressive vocal vortex, as a rush of beats and drums pull you back into the hypnotic groove. Another mystical creation that's sure to be a stand out in the Dutch producer's meticulous discography.

The second and final interpretation of 'Haze Over Night' is provided by Eyal Cohen who is making his third appearance on the label. The Israeli producer first appeared on the Belgian imprint in 2014 with his remix of Daraspa's 'Rendro'. 2015 saw him rework 'So Intentional' from Future Motions and now he returns for his third and most anticipated remix for the label.  Eyal's trippy, yet club oriented sound has evolved immensely this year and he's turned in a deep and wondrous beauty for his 'Haze Over Night' interpretation. It's laid back, subterranean groove creates a marvellously contoured foundation, while a moody motif begins to develop obscurely above. Layered beats, acidic designs and a dubby soundscape carry the piece into the main break, before an eerie tonal motif takes over. As the piercing hooks place a tighter grip on your senses the layered beats return in massive fashion, pushing forward for a suitably rousing conclusion. A great remix from Eyal and a fine end to one of Sound Avenue's best ever releases. Don't miss it.

When the combination is good, then it should not be changed. Already known duo from The Purr rooster, Fakir and Chrono, teamed up again to create this deep, a bit dark, and trippy house track. Totally different from what we used to hear from these lads, but yet again unique, as it should be. "Unrius" EP, beside their stellar original, has two remixes, one from debut artist, Andrew Becks, who showed class skills with the "Unrius" re-interpretation and a truly deep house soul, all the way from Mar Del Plata, Sebbe, whose remix is a treat for all deep house souls all over the world!

After the 2019 launch of The Gardens of Babylon’s record label we find ourselves in a very different world. Last year’s compilation was a musical snapshot of a physical festival experience with contributions coming from those who were there. This year, the compilation assumes a different role – a sonic journey through the times, memories, and loved ones we miss, as well as a sense of comfort as we look to reunite on a dancefloor somewhere around the world. 

‘The Monastery’ 2020 draws contributions from friends and family, developing its narrative from the opening percussion of Menachem 26’s ‘Kumpaki Blues’ through the closing euphoria of Glauco di Mambro’s ‘Solar Safari. Along the way, each track reads as a different chapter, transporting listeners to the sea of smiles that make up The Monastery Festival Experience. These chapters break down the weekend, encapsulating the emotions of its many facets, locations, and feelings. With ‘Light on the Road,’ Ali Farahani sets palpable anticipation, leading into the jazzy breaks of Gorje Hewk & Izhevski’s ‘Der Geist Seiner Zeit’. Then, Maga’s delicately brooding ‘Musike’ (feat. Arc) makes way for the gently rising piano of Parallell’s ‘Everybody Knows’. By the time, Derun’s ‘Los Caminos de Sirkedji’ hits, things start getting twisty, day turns to night, and ‘The Monastery’ is in full swing. From here, Amine K, Niko Schwind, Noraj Cue & unders, Dauw, Madmotormiquel, and Headwaters expand consciousness through mythical, hypnotic offerings – some low slung, some deep, dark, and driving. This is where resident VANDER’s ‘We Can’t Get No Sleep’ drops and sums up the experience perfectly, interjecting fresh funk into groovy percussion, before giving way to afterhours vibes courtesy of KRAUT, Franca, and Sound Shapes.

It may be another year until the hallowed grounds of Goch’s Kloster Graefenthal turns into our musical paradise again, but with ‘The Monastery’ 2020 compilation, its starry nights and sweaty days transport through speakers and souls as we patiently wait for the world we know to return stronger, healthier, and more conscious than ever before.
