Behind That Everyday Smile

Dusty Glory Days

Autumn for Scarecrows a blank verse sonnet 

The whistling corn are razored stubbly mounds
and reedy greens of spring are phantom songs
as acorns dance a waltz on windy days
the Scarecrow's hay is soggy brown and old.

A crow of mottled black stands on his hat
he whispers caws of frozen icy months
of empty beaks and stuffing falling out
until the turning wheel brings growth again.

Kaleidoscopes of red and yellow play
in fading sunny days that echo heat
his feathered crown flies from the naked field
to chimney stacks with wafting smoke of bread.

His lump coal eyes are laying in the mire
while farming folk eat harvest by the fire

The oak on willow road...( an English sonnet)




The oak on willow road is sharply chopped
by swinging surgeon flailing hefty saw
its falling limbs by metal teeth are lopped
now light can shine on number two's front door.

Swift paths are built in forests' needled dirt
but signals work the nets beneath the tracks
unhinged by men the messages divert
the talking trees undressed by digging whacks.

A neighbour's trunk can shield against a storm
when saplings root it's ne'er a fluky spot
with gnarly threads and energies that warn
or shady nods if climates run too hot.

Re-wilding man is raking up the leaves
unpicking chaining stitches while he weaves.

FLY AGAINST THE WIND WITH ME

If you can spare thirteen minutes of your day
  for sake of the next three years and well beyond;
If you are undecided, choked numb by smoke and mirrors
  or with a moment's hesitation have your say;
If you are not quite sure the whims and moods
  of this land, who would take your money, shake your
hand, pretend to care, lie again, cheat and lose their way;
  If you are angry, still standing after bushfire, flood
and virus, doubt or wonder who should lead us
  beyond this crucial merry-go-round of May;
And if you want only the best for your country, your children,
  not the worst we've seen in bogan disarray;
Listen up, yours can be a future worthy for the taking,
  let's fly against the wind together and yes, remember -
Then my friend, you are ready to cast that vital vote today.
