Vaudeville Radio Hour #34 (April 14th 2014)

A Year In Jerusalem is a humorous and touching radio diary tracing the day-to-day life of producer, Mark Baker, in the Holy City. 

At the beginning of 2016, Mark Baker accompanied his partner, who got a job with an NGO in Jerusalem. Throughout the year, Mark documented his encounters and his struggles, dealing with life as a ‘trailing spouse’, and presents them in this witty and moving chronicle. 

The presenter paints a vivid picture of all the obscurities of Jerusalem, from the extremism of religion and the “constant text message alerts” about the conflict, to the awkwardness of shopping in a foreign country and not speaking the language.

Mark’s personal observations are balanced with interviews with locals and fellow ex-pats. His autobiographical approach means this is no regular documentary or a typical travelogue. Mark speaks candidly about his experiences such as being invited to a Muslim wake by a local shopkeeper, accidentally being blessed on the way to the western wall, and getting hit by a pilgrim’s cross during an Easter procession.

Jerusalem has always captured the imagination of the entire world and there are endless sources and documentaries based on the city - however there are very few accounts from such a unique point of view as A Year In Jerusalem.

Amichai is the first newly built Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, since the 1993 Oslo Accords. It will house the 40 families of Amona, an Israeli outpost, which was evacuated in February this year, due to a Supreme Court decision. Until Amichai is completed the majority of the Amona settlers are living in overcrowded conditions at the close-by Ofra settlement. 

The West Bank valley of Shiloh (Jaloud in Arabic) is already heavily concentrated with Israeli outposts and settlements that affect the lives of local Palestinians. With the construction of Amichai, army presence will increase and Palestinians will have an even harder time to access their land. And with the increase of settlers in the area the local Palestinians also fear further violence against them, and their land. 

The new construction also sends a strong message from PM Netanyahu to Palestine and the rest of the world that he continues to support the settler movement, in the face of the recent United States’ push for peace negotiations.

While PM Trudeau’s recent promise of legalising marijuana has yet to be implemented, the medical marijuana industry in Canada, is booming. But, Israel, a surprising new comer to the international market claims it is already growing more than the whole medical marijuana market of Canada.  
And now, Israel is set to open a new medical cannabis facility, capable of producing 80 tonnes of dry buds, a year.
