It's a rule of writing passed around like an illegal cigarette. You must murder your darlings. Producers, script writers, authors, editors have all had the rule thrown at them. These scenes may be fantastically written, funny, evocative…but they don’t belong, they obscure the plot, blind us from the truth. But what if these anecdotes had a programme to themselves? What if you could bring those Darlings back to life ? 


BBC R4 - Bring Your Darlings Back To Life

In Autumn 2016, Reading prison opened to the public for the first time for an Artangel project in which a 30-strong showcase of artists and writers share works in response to De Profundis. 

Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in Reading Prison between 1895 and 1897, enduring the Separate System, a harsh penal regime designed to eliminate any contact between prisoners. During this period he wrote one of his last great works: an extended letter to his lover Lord Alfred Douglas, later published as De Profundis.

The actor Stephen Rea returned to cell C.3.3 in HM Reading Prison to perform De Profundis. The reading was preceded by a feature documentary where writer and director Neil Bartlett examined the conditions under which Wilde was writing.

Arthur is eleven, likes dinosaurs and plays the cello. Arthur's dad Babak is 40, an artist and a former musician. His most successful artistic endeavour was when he collected twigs and sold them on eBay for £62.

As his self-deprecating social media posts suggest, Babak Ganjei doesn't have the best outlook on life. He makes prints that state, "I'm in the bush and I really love you" and, "I regret the divorce." One exhibition is optimistically titled "Everything is really bad and it’s only going to get worse and this is the most perfect time".

Arthur thinks his Dad should go for more runs, worry less and get a cat. Arthur also thinks it’s time his Dad learned how to ride a bike.

In 2019, the importance of self-care is everywhere. Self-help books, wellness conferences and therapist offices - telling people how to help themselves is a significant business. For three weeks, Arthur’s 11-year-old mind imaginatively tries to fix his Dad’s life.
