DOG FACE BRIDGE
It was late at night, October 1953
Wind howling, branches humming, leaves raining down from every tree
I was trying to tune the radio, but the signal seemed to shift and fade.
Bits of news from the Korean War, prisoners, whispers of atrocity,
Just then I heard a fearsome racket from the road down by the Kankakee,
The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge.

My Dad appeared at the doorway, he said, “Call the sheriff right away,
“Howard D” and Linda just flew by, like bats to hell, I’m going to see if they’re okay,
He’s nothing but an aggravation, he’s no damn good if you ask me.”
My Mom said, “Better hurry out there Robert, they might be needing help right away,
It’s windy, cold and lonely tonight down by the Kankakee.”
The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge.

My sister said, “You know, I think Daddy’s right, Howie’s just plain hard and mean,
Why just this morning Linda phoned me up, saying they had a terrible fight,
She said he kicked out Kansas, drove down to the swamp and shoved him out the door,
She was just a girl when she got that dog, she’d had him seven years or more.
I told her I saw Kansas, lonely and lost last night on the road down by the Kankakee.”

No, it wasn’t long at all, my Dad came back in looking awful pale and kinda’ small,
He never said much about what he saw that night
But the schoolyard buzzed with the lurid tale alright
Howard D, he walked away from that crash, saying he had no memory
But Linda’s arm was tangled in the steering wheel,
Her neck was severed by the windshield glass
They found a collie’s headless body sprawled thirty feet out in the swampy grass
They said they heard a howling through the misty moonlight over Dog Face Bridge.

Well, I don’t know about you,
But I’ve seen a few…
Things.
I don’t want to believe.

That was a long time ago, the road is only lonelier because the bridge fell down,
Sometimes around Halloween kids looking for a thrill venture out from town.
They say that if you stand just so, you’ll see a woman’s body with the head of a dog
Beckon like Anubis from the water’s down below, but me, I don’t go,
I can’t stand the sound of wind whistling through the trees
I never drive alone on that road down to the Kankakee, I don’t want to see

imperceptibly alive.

Still her legs were like anvils
rooted into the earth

veins hugging the world.

Toria Garbutt is an English spoken word performer, poet, recording artist and author. Her distinctive voice is regional, northern. She has spent the past 7 years touring with the living legend, John Cooper Clarke and has released two poetry anthologies. This is Toria's first foray into music. She currently lives in West Yorkshire.

The music is by Barry Snaith, recording artist, producer, multi instrumentalist. Amongst lots of other things, he releases music as TIJ, is one half of Euro-Goth-Electronica duo, m1nk and has recently released an album of his soundscapes for VR games and apps. He's been around a bit, recorded with Chrissie Hynde, supported The Ramones on a past UK tour and recorded with online activist Carl Malamud. Barry currently lives just outside Manchester.
Both are very prolific writers.
They are currently rehearsing for gigs.

Then I added some of my Snaithilicious guitar and mixed them all in the pot  - together I think we've created something uncategorizable. I hope you like it. There will be more. After many a ‘heated debate’ between the fantastic Lola Demo and I, we finally got the track we both wanted without shedding  too many tears. I must have gone through a whole box of tissues.
The trials and tribulations were many - Erika’s laptop broke before we even began and I soon learned that a small Greek island isn’t the place for speedy repairs. My Mac then died on me - unsurprising after the beatings I give it. Then we had a few ‘issues’ about the subject matter and my gory artwork (which I’ve since altered in the light of current horrors). Then I wanted to enlist the astounding skills of the (surely) extra-dextered Darren Chilton, much like Eddie Van Halen on Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Turns out he also had no computer (Darren, not Jacko) so we had to liaise via internet cafés in Tokyo. Darren's only brief was to 'make it as fucked up as possible'. Eventually a truly global song was born (Tokyo, Ithaca, Wakefield). 
I’d also like to say that, once computers were revived, Erika and Darren were so quick to provide their stellar contributions, whereas I laboured faaar too long over the mix, which eventually Erika mastered superbly over at Ithaca Manor.
Anyway, here’s the result. I hope you like it. Loved working with them both. Please listen to their music, you won't be disappointed.

I loved the stark simplicity of the original - she sounds like the voice of some dark angel or maybe a child ghost talking to god - please listen to it. Here I’ve tried to add more mayhem to the event with some Snaithilicious ambient guitars. For those of you in the UK this will be performed during Anda’s tour and is soon to be on ep release along with Here & Now. Watch this space.

Her man is an artist. He's a strange  little guy, an accordionist (who knows how to play the java.
She hears the java but she doesn't dance. She doesn't even look at the dancefloor. Her loving eyes follow the vigorous playing and the wiry, long fingers of the artist. It gets under her skin. From the bottom,. From the top. She has the urge to sing, it's physical. All of her being is tensed.

Recorded in Le Chat Noir jazz-club, in the  Latin Quarter of Paris and 'restored from the original 78s', this fourth taster track from the forthcoming album of classic chansons sees the amazing Luciole Langevine @luciole-langevine taking on Sinatra and tipping him  upside down whilst more guest musicians from around the world pocket his change. If you close your eyes you can hear Breton counting it in and Cocteau, Picasso, Piaf and Josephine Baker chatting in the crowd. A true story. Someone who lied  to save themselves.  It happens.
I wrote this as pretty much a straight rock track.The title was a bastardisation of Jack Palance's sneering line in the movie 'Shane' just before he cold-heartedly shoots Tory dead in the mud outside Grafton's, then slowly skulks off, smirking.
