Born in reverse with 'Interluded' - 'Dedulretni' brought a failed EDM idea full circle.

Originally recorded to complete a track that began as a failed EDM project, Dedulretni was designed to bridge into the reversed version that follows (Interluded), and to briefly trick anyone listening on vinyl into thinking their turntable had given up, slowing to a stop before spinning back the other way.

Recorded across three separate takes and stitched together, this edit presents the piece (played by Chris Bartle) in its raw form, without the vinyl crackle and sound effect that originally linked into the reversed track.

From failed dance track to fragile EP finale: The Story Behind Dedulretni – Interluded.

This track began back in 2003, while I was studying Music in Oxford. I’d been working on an EDM track using Cubase that wasn’t going anywhere, so in frustration I reversed it and slowed it down by half. The reversed melody had something strangely moving about it, so I decided to build around it instead of abandoning it. I began shaping it into a brief linking moment between tracks — an interlude of sorts — and titled it ‘Interluded’.

Late one night at home, trying not to wake anyone, I recorded a quiet acoustic guitar part, then added bass guitar directly through a DI box into my old Folio F1 mixer. Months later, I returned to it and discovered wild piano takes from another track I was working on - Preluded Two Desert Score - performed by my dad, Chris. They were loosely in the same key, not always harmonically perfect, but beautifully human.

I spliced these fragments together, refining the mix over the next two years until it finally closed my 2008 EP, On How Life Got in the Way. To complete the track, I asked my old man to riff on the same piano chords of Am and F — as an introduction to the track, separated by the sound of a vinyl record slowing to a stop and starting again 'in reverse'. Ultimately, I think I wanted to mess with anyone listening on vinyl — to make them think their turntable had given up for a moment before revealing the reversed track.

The result felt inevitable: “Dedulretni – Interluded.” 

What began as a failed EDM track became the fragile finale to the EP and hopefully shows how sometimes the best ideas come from what didn’t work. This exclusive version presents only the Interluded section itself - without the piano introduction - and features a more prominent bass guitar in the mix. It was mastered with SoundCloud Mastering, giving it a distinct tone and dynamic range compared to the 2008 EP release.
