Costa Rican DJ/producer Barzo and Mexican singer-songwriter Pahua combine their artistry in “Bahía”, a fusion of electronic and folk with dub sounds and tropical rhythms.

The song accentuates the sweet and harmonious vocals of Pahua, which captivate us and transmit a message about the most valuable natural elements in our environment: water, the different ways to interact with it and the need to value its importance.

The music mixes synthesizers and organic instruments with a hypnotic percussion, highlighting Barzo’s arrangements and production skills. This collaboration displays the force in the union of the Latinamerican New Wave.

The single, which includes the contributions of Swann Jacquet in graphic design and Ricardo Bernal in mixing and mastering, releases March 22nd 2021 (World Water Day) via independent record label Lácteo Cósmico.

Costa Rican DJ/producer Barzo makes his Latin Lo-Fi debut with “Cholomuco”, an instrumental fusion of hip hop and tropical rhythms with melancholic vibes. The track blends electric guitars, pianos and a boombap beat with yearning brass and Latin percussions in the style of Cumbia, Bolero and Salsa. This combination of influences is in character with the sonic exploration of Barztep. The single is part of “The Longest Day” compilation curated by Acrylic Label, which involves several artists of the Latin American Lo-Fi scene such as Palmasur, Jiony, Mylo B, SpoonBeats and Flora Vida. The artwork, designed by Swann Jacquet, is inspired by the fauna and artistic patterns of the region. The single releases June 18th 2021 via Lácteo Cósmico.

Cholomuco

Barzo and Sandra Nankoma team up in “Omukwano”, a celebration of love and appreciation of the present moment. The song is the first single off their forthcoming 4-track EP titled “Langi”, a unique blend of funk, soul and electronic sounds. Barzo is a Costa Rican DJ and producer with a career spanning over a decade of releases and live performances. From his early days as a DJ to his most recent productions, Barzo has demonstrated great skill for mixing different musical styles with ease and flow. Sandra Nankoma is a Ugandan recording artist, performer, singer, songwriter, poet, composer and author. Her musical journey is majorly influenced by traditional soul rhythms, storytelling and alternative jazz ballads from the African continent with a distinctive identity that breaks traditional African sound stereotypes. La colaboración nos sumerge en un viaje interestelar con toques de tropicalidad. Entre sintetizadores, congas y la envolvente voz de Debi Nova, se traza un camino de groove rumbo al paraíso donde el amor inspira y eleva la energía. El audiovisual, dirigido por .nine estudio, nos lleva hacia el planeta "Paradise", un lugar donde la energía que emanan sus habitantes mantiene activo el ciclo de la vida. Este sencillo fue mezclado y masterizado por Ricardo Bernal y cuenta con la participación de la destacada guitarrista Daniela García. El DJ y productor costarricense Barzo presenta “Ritmos Mestizos”, una colección de obras musicales inspiradas en los ritmos tradicionales de su país natal. Esta producción audio-investigativo fue desarrollada con el apoyo del fondo concursable extraordinario “Becas Creativas” del Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud de Costa Rica, mediante la Dirección de Cultura.

La tercera producción, “Huanacaxtle”, es una mezcla de ritmos de la Parrandera con vientos festivos y marimbas electrónicas, reminiscente de las cimarronas regionales y de las canciones populares costarricenses como el “Punto Guanacasteco”; reimaginada con un estilo de producción neo-futurista. En su estructuración, se aprecia una introducción con redoblante, bombo y platillo simbolizando el clásico estallido de la bombeta; mientras que en su puente, la obra se transforma en un contrapunto hipnótico antes de recaer nuevamente a su tempo allegro original. Su título deriva del árbol nacional conocido científicamente como Enterolobium Cyclocarpum y con abundante presencia en la provincia de Guanacaste, empleando el idioma Náhuatl para enfatizar la interconexión ancestral entre todos los territorios de Abya Yala.

La investigación histórica y producción de arreglos instrumentales fue asesorada por Javier Alvarado, mientras que la mezcla y masterización fue ingeniada por Ricardo Bernal. La portada fue diseñada por Swann Jacquet e inspirada en la carreta típica costarricense, elemento fuertemente arraigado a la identidad nacional que ha sido declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde el año 1995.

El EP de tres canciones se publica el 12 de Octubre del 2020 bajo el sello discográfico independiente Lácteo Cósmico y se descarga gratuitamente en la página oficial de Barzo. Desde 1994, Costa Rica celebra en esa misma fecha el “Día de las Culturas” para enaltecer el carácter pluricultural y multiétnico del pueblo costarricense. Con este lanzamiento, el productor busca expandir los horizontes del Barztep; su característica visión para la exploración sonora y experimentación musical.

La segunda obra, “Cahuita”, es una fusión del Calipso Limonense con ritmos Soca y sonidos electrónicos, homenajeando la costa caribeña del territorio Tico. Este género tradicional, encabezado por el calypsonian Walter "Gavitt" Ferguson, también fue declarado patrimonio cultural inmaterial desde el 2012. En la grabación, se incluyen muestras de guitarras provenientes del proyecto ganador del concurso público ProArtes, “Chantuelle Sample Pack”, interpretadas por Junior Álvarez de Kawe Calypso Band y grabadas por Rombos Sound Studio.

La primera canción, “Nueva Guardia”, es un Suin Criollo que combina instrumentos de viento, bajos retumbantes, sintetizadores psicodélicos y una rítmica percusión liderada por el pulsante sonido de la guacharaca. Esta experimentación de la Cumbia con un tempo lento, asociada a las cumbias rebajadas conceptualizadas en Monterrey de México, está influenciada por el baile folklórico nacional; declarado patrimonio cultural inmaterial desde el 2012.

The prolific DJ/producer Barzo and the legendary singer-songwriter Guadalupe Urbina join forces on “Marimbalunando”. The song is an homage to the resplendent moon and to the resounding marimba, characteristic elements of the Costa Rican identity. This collaboration merges the rhythm of Trap and a sample of Marimba Diriá with the sweet yet potent voice of Guadalupe Urbina, symbolizing the union of diverse generations. The single marks a new milestone in the successful career of Guadalupe Urbina, spanning three decades of live performances across America, Europe and Africa; making her one of the most important compilers of Costa Rican traditions and culture. The recording was mixed and mastered by Ricardo Bernal and the artwork was designed by Swann Jacquet. This release will be published on November 30th 2020, National Costa Rican Marimba Day, via the independent record label Lácteo Cósmico.
