Deg-ology. Deg-ism.

It took me a couple of years get invited to Deg’s (aka Circadian Rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his Sonic Archive. But time tells and Basic Moves 02 is what came out. The two tracks were recorded at Earguard Studio in Brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons.

“Frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo. I’m super happy I could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master DAT tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. We had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini DAT cassette. After a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “A dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”.

“House Speaker Call” originated in proto-techno forms. Deg never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. As a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. Deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit.

The next episode in our podcast series comes from a globe-trotting Belgian deejay on the rise. Antwerp-born, Berliner for a few years and recently settled down in our favourite city: Brussels. Lola Haro doesn’t need much of an introduction. She has been playing dance floors all over the world from Mexico to London, Milan to Paris, Tbilisi to Bucharest. Over a year ago her own record label and party concept called Small Steps blossomed, a home to delicate, floaty club music of all kinds. 

But Rome wasn’t built in a day: from a very early age, Lola was brought up in a musical nest, surrounded by Antwerp’s “creme de la creme” of the house music scene and calling the legendary record shop Wally’s Groove World her second home during her childhood. Suffice it to say Lola is influenced by the old-school generation of club music fanatics, party gurus and diamond city fashionistas. Standing next to the dj booth as a teenager checking those spinning records, sliding faders and eq knobs and coming of age as a club music observer that smoothly but surely became a world-known dj. 

While Lola has been flying high the last couple of years, playing big stages and festivals, she’s always kept her feet firmly set in the underground. We’ve been friends for some time and we share conversations about common personal questions like the search for identity in music, mental dj health, and the balance between the dance music business and the underground electronic world.

This mix has been in the making for some time and the result is a magnificent deep trip into her musical universe. I’m very glad to share this with you all. Thanks a lot for your effort and time spent recording this mix Lola, I wish you a bright future ahead. One foot in, one foot out, always taking lots of small but important steps.

The Basic Moves Of ... LOLA HARO

Max Tournay aka https://soundcloud.com/kafim is an established name in the Brussels underground community. He started deejaying techno music as a resident of the infamous Deep In House collective, who later founded C12 club where he was also a resident for several years. 

Max and I used to play regularly together around 2014/2015 as a deep techno dj duo and shared a couple of nice moments behind the booth. Yet, our paths went separate ways. Max’s interest floated away from club music, pulled towards a more wave-y, slowmo, rock-oriented spectrum. He has been a long-time host on Lyl radio, presenting a show called Basses Besognes focussing on psychedelic rock, garage, shoegaze & other guitar sounds. He also co-runs the (party) collective Curly Teeth, a platform for slowed-down forms of left-field club music.

Flash forward to a couple of months ago. Kafim played a long afternoon set at Horst Club’s intimate “Garage” room during the Gayhaze & Cocktail D’amore 2-day take over. On the dance floor, I was completely blown away by the uniqueness of Kafim’s music selection and super-skilled mixing. The energy that day was very special and emotional for me and the question of asking Max to share his mix after that day/night spent together was very logical. Here is the result of an artist rediscovering himself constantly but always counting on the technical skills of his early techno days. 

Another fact: Max came up with the name Basic Moves when Ailsa and I started the project 8 years ago. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed again, and I can give a platform to this live recording.
