BSS Radio Episode 072 With Melina Serser

Ahead of his release on Second Circle as ISOR29, our amigo Tomas (@tomasstation) from Colombia handed over this month's mix and was kind enough to join a chat with us too. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hola Tomas, can you tell a bit about growing up in Colombia? 

TS: Growing up in Colombia was a real blessing. It has given me not only a special bond with nature and mother earth which I cherish but also an interesting perspective on human life. I was born in Bogotá to a Colombian father and American mother, so I actually grew up in between Colombia and the States (Bogotá and Chicago to be precise). To have this perspective on 2 very different societies and cultures made me aware and open to navigate in between these coexisting worlds and bring them together.. even though I feel like an outsider to both sometimes. There's a beautiful song by Facundo Cabral called ‘’No Soy De Aqui ni Soy de Allá’’ which I feel can explain this feeling.

MFM: What was your first connection with music? At what point and how did you get in touch with (electronic) dance music?

TS: Music has always been a trusted companion. Both my parents are artists and musicians in their own sense but I would say it was mainly my mothers influence that got me hooked on making music, although I must admit it was my father that exorcized the Death Metal phase out of me when I was 13 by forcing me to go with him to an afro colombian pacific music festival in Cali called the Petroneo Alvarez. This was a special moment for me that profoundly affected and changed the way I would listen and feel about music.

MFM: Your music -in a way- sounds very like European dance music from the '90s. Can you explain where this comes from?

TS: Haha.. thanks I guess. For sure there are elements of inspiration from the UK and Europe. Richard H. Kirk changed my life, so did Tako, Ricardo Villalobos, Jonny Rock and many other masters of their craft! I'm grateful that their influence and that of a few others are present in my music and life, although I hope that my sound also comes across as personal and sincere. One of the things I love about music in general is the diversity and humanity in it, innit. Jon Hassell’s concept of the Fourth World for example fascinates me. He uses this philosophy to describe the possibility of music in global terms beyond First World, beyond Third World, beyond High-Tech Art classical, beyond pop.”as an ideal blend of traditional music from around the world with Western forms and modern electronics, forming a kind of contemporary folk music from “unknown and imaginary regions.”Being able to combine and use different styles of music almost as the elements in chemistry to create something new is a fun way to look at it.

MFM: 'Moon Phase Gardening' was very much a “pandemic-project” so to speak. Do you think your next musical output will sound different now that lockdowns seem behind us?

TS: Change is one of the constants of life. The experience of making and now listening to this music has helped me to be mindful of this. I hope to grow and evolve as a human being from every lesson and moment that life gives me.

MFM: What can you tell about the mix? 

TS: For the mix I went for what I was feeling today. 1 hour stream of consciousness, from the heart into the electro latino flavor, that is a mix of latin american sounds with occasional electronics, poems, satire and a splash of humor. Music from Simon Diaz, Dennys Del Rio, Alzheimer, Paul Desenne, Meridian Brothers, Señor Coconut, Abelardo Carbono, Frente Cumbiero, Manteca, Orchestra Moderna Soledad, Atom ™, Conjunto Miramar and one of the bonus tracks from the Isor29 project which contains vocals from Underground Resistance’s transition, one of my favorite mantras.

Yes yes ! This one took some time, mostly from my side, since the beginning of summer focus has been a bit off-focused. But here we are back on track presenting you a very special summer soaked podcast by Paris-based Tom Joyce.

I met Tom last year in August together with his buddy Juliano at Heidegluehen club in Berlin where he took over the decks after my long warm up set. I got completely sucked into his groove and we later hung out the whole day and night in this special club full of love and peace. A place for real house music. 

Tom also runs the amazing Sounds Benefit label releasing deep electro, breaky house and quirky minimal. 

I’m very pleased to have this classy dj, producer and label owner with us for our most recent podcast.  Open your windows, serve yourself a cold beverage and enjoy the jams in this excellent mixtape.

Max Tournay aka https://soundcloud.com/kafim is an established name in the Brussels underground community. He started deejaying techno music as a resident of the infamous Deep In House collective, who later founded C12 club where he was also a resident for several years. 

Max and I used to play regularly together around 2014/2015 as a deep techno dj duo and shared a couple of nice moments behind the booth. Yet, our paths went separate ways. Max’s interest floated away from club music, pulled towards a more wave-y, slowmo, rock-oriented spectrum. He has been a long-time host on Lyl radio, presenting a show called Basses Besognes focussing on psychedelic rock, garage, shoegaze & other guitar sounds. He also co-runs the (party) collective Curly Teeth, a platform for slowed-down forms of left-field club music.

Flash forward to a couple of months ago. Kafim played a long afternoon set at Horst Club’s intimate “Garage” room during the Gayhaze & Cocktail D’amore 2-day take over. On the dance floor, I was completely blown away by the uniqueness of Kafim’s music selection and super-skilled mixing. The energy that day was very special and emotional for me and the question of asking Max to share his mix after that day/night spent together was very logical. Here is the result of an artist rediscovering himself constantly but always counting on the technical skills of his early techno days. 

Another fact: Max came up with the name Basic Moves when Ailsa and I started the project 8 years ago. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed again, and I can give a platform to this live recording.

Jane Fitz took the stage twice with a B2B set this at rural 2024, and she appeared on the final day with her musical partner Jade Seatle, who co-hosts the DIY party “Night Moves” in their home, London. The final day started out rainy, but ended up with sunny skies. This set was deeply connected with such a dramatic ending. Enjoy this euphoric collection of left-field tech house gems.

We are a great admirer of FROND's work, both as an DJ across the UK's subterranean/swampy rave scene, and through her precise production style, displayed in her recent People & Places release. We also have v fond memories of her masterful set at Bakk Heia last year, where she gracefully tunnelled through the gears towards collective joyful chaos.

Jill Krecké aka GURL (https://soundcloud.com/j1ll) is a Luxembourg-born, Brussels-based artist & archivist. We met more than a decade ago on the dancefloor of Fuse Club, Brussels. Ever since, we’ve stayed close music/clubbing friends and swum through different moments in our lives, forever positively connected and supportive. 

Properly balanced and in the pipeline for some years (!!!) now, Gurl’s Basic Moves podcast demonstrates her love for detroity electro, wonky breakbeats and dusty techno. Her passion and skills for mixing and digging up this specific sound of dance music have forged her a steady presence in the electronic music scene of Brussels. Since she started performing as a deejay at the age of 22, she’s became part of various projects (Brüxsel Jardin, C12, Planet), not only as an artist but also as a promoter and safe spacer. 

As a number one supporter and participant of our Beautiful Freaks party, it was a logical choice to ask Jill to join the core team. Multitasking 3-dimensional friends forever. Enjoy the energies & roll out the beats. Gurl in the mix!

The Basic Moves Of … GURL

Transmitting from one of Belgium’s most promising electronic dance spaces, the Garage at Horst club. It’s the most intimate room of the club. Ko-designed, ko-invented and ko(be)-built by the deejay behind this live recorded Basic Moves mix: Kuba’97 ! 

Kobe is part of the early generation of Horst alumni. From his early 20ies he has been involved in this world leading and ultra professional hybrid architecture, art, culture and (club) music festival. They are organising a yearly festival in May and a burgeoning club space that operates throughout the rest of the year on the Asiat site just outside of Brussels. Back in 2018 Kobe started together with a crew of music heads and dreamers a nightlife collective called nacht which operated from the socio-cultural spot Stelplaats in Louvain. This being said Kobe is also the head of production at our Beautiful Freaks parties, a fantastic cook, creative DIY handy person, cider maker, pizza master & great human to have around anytime of the day or night. 

Now let’s put some attention to what Kobe loves the most … records! He has been working hard, digging through the fruitful orchard that is dance music (and beyond), to make his own special brew. This live recording is a perfect reflection of what he loves and has discovered over the last couple of years. We hear shreds of deep techno, spaced out minimal, 80s inspired body music workouts, psychedelic oddities, proggy weird b-sides…and more; definitely not the easiest spread to put together. In Kobe’s hands these three and a half hours are a cruizin’ ride, produced in the dj booth he has built and danced-to by the community Brussels has been (re)building over the last decade … with Kuba’97 unquestionably at the heart of it.

Attention music lovers ! This is an ultra ultra special mix, since it is the long-awaited islas Basic Moves podcast. Ailsa Cavers aka islas and I started and ran the record label and club nights together for the first four years. As time takes things and things take time (and life rolls on (and off) and on) our paths have brought us back to sharing friendship, culture, and music again :)

islas also Ailsa is a creative centipede roaming the fields of art, design, music, literature and so much more. Originally from Reading (UK) but relocated to Bordeaux (FR) in the early 2000s where she studied at Ecole Des Beaux Arts before landing in what is now her hometown, Brussels (BE). Together with a bunch of like-minded souls she started the electronic music collective Planet, ran a music pop-up called OP-a with her bff Dana Kuehr…overall islas is a busy, gifted artistic bee that never stings.

Sooo to the music: 2 years in the making, this mix is a story of carefully selected, funny and open-minded club music dug up in the garden of electro house, quirky tech house, Detroit techno, and millennium minimal. All with an islas twist and topped with an English, French and Belgian sauce. Praise the lovely, steezy Ailsa alias islas forever !
