In the far north of Colombia, all the way along the Caribbean coast, you can find one of the world's best hostels called El Rio. This magnificent place is co-run by Ben Davies who left the north of the UK a decade ago in search of sun, snakes and waterfalls.

One element that makes El Rio special is that, since its inception, underground clubbing and electronic music have been central to the project. This manifests as endless club nights, riverside sunrises (and mornings), and the groundbreaking Bonanza festival, a happening that brings together the very best of Colombian, South American and global underground electronic dance music acts, all co-curated by Ben and Adi    

Ben Davies also deejays under the name Benny. His UK roots are never far away, which is something you will hear in this brand new Basic Moves mix, recorded live on Sunday evening of this year’s edition of Bonanza. I was on the dancefloor the whole time and when, a couple of months ago, Benny told me the set was recorded, it was a no-brainer to put it out on the Basic Moves platform.

Snakes, waterfalls and a lot of techno, breaks, trance and acidic goodies … just how we like it … give it up for Benny!

Max Tournay aka https://soundcloud.com/kafim is an established name in the Brussels underground community. He started deejaying techno music as a resident of the infamous Deep In House collective, who later founded C12 club where he was also a resident for several years. 

Max and I used to play regularly together around 2014/2015 as a deep techno dj duo and shared a couple of nice moments behind the booth. Yet, our paths went separate ways. Max’s interest floated away from club music, pulled towards a more wave-y, slowmo, rock-oriented spectrum. He has been a long-time host on Lyl radio, presenting a show called Basses Besognes focussing on psychedelic rock, garage, shoegaze & other guitar sounds. He also co-runs the (party) collective Curly Teeth, a platform for slowed-down forms of left-field club music.

Flash forward to a couple of months ago. Kafim played a long afternoon set at Horst Club’s intimate “Garage” room during the Gayhaze & Cocktail D’amore 2-day take over. On the dance floor, I was completely blown away by the uniqueness of Kafim’s music selection and super-skilled mixing. The energy that day was very special and emotional for me and the question of asking Max to share his mix after that day/night spent together was very logical. Here is the result of an artist rediscovering himself constantly but always counting on the technical skills of his early techno days. 

Another fact: Max came up with the name Basic Moves when Ailsa and I started the project 8 years ago. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed again, and I can give a platform to this live recording.

Jill Krecké aka GURL (https://soundcloud.com/j1ll) is a Luxembourg-born, Brussels-based artist & archivist. We met more than a decade ago on the dancefloor of Fuse Club, Brussels. Ever since, we’ve stayed close music/clubbing friends and swum through different moments in our lives, forever positively connected and supportive. 

Properly balanced and in the pipeline for some years (!!!) now, Gurl’s Basic Moves podcast demonstrates her love for detroity electro, wonky breakbeats and dusty techno. Her passion and skills for mixing and digging up this specific sound of dance music have forged her a steady presence in the electronic music scene of Brussels. Since she started performing as a deejay at the age of 22, she’s became part of various projects (Brüxsel Jardin, C12, Planet), not only as an artist but also as a promoter and safe spacer. 

As a number one supporter and participant of our Beautiful Freaks party, it was a logical choice to ask Jill to join the core team. Multitasking 3-dimensional friends forever. Enjoy the energies & roll out the beats. Gurl in the mix!

We first caught a glimpse of this shade at the Seekers x Faciendo weekender at Hoppetosse in snowy Berlin this past February. With tired legs after hours on the floor, we drifted downstairs and stumbled into a deeply considered downtempo set, curated with warmth, restraint, and intention. It was a moment that gently pulled us inward, reshaping the energy of the night.

Inspired by that experience, we invited Cosmic to share this reflective mode with us. What followed is a soulful, immersive journey, grounded in emotion, textured in detail, and delivered with care.

Transmitting from one of Belgium’s most promising electronic dance spaces, the Garage at Horst club. It’s the most intimate room of the club. Ko-designed, ko-invented and ko(be)-built by the deejay behind this live recorded Basic Moves mix: Kuba’97 ! 

Kobe is part of the early generation of Horst alumni. From his early 20ies he has been involved in this world leading and ultra professional hybrid architecture, art, culture and (club) music festival. They are organising a yearly festival in May and a burgeoning club space that operates throughout the rest of the year on the Asiat site just outside of Brussels. Back in 2018 Kobe started together with a crew of music heads and dreamers a nightlife collective called nacht which operated from the socio-cultural spot Stelplaats in Louvain. This being said Kobe is also the head of production at our Beautiful Freaks parties, a fantastic cook, creative DIY handy person, cider maker, pizza master & great human to have around anytime of the day or night. 

Now let’s put some attention to what Kobe loves the most … records! He has been working hard, digging through the fruitful orchard that is dance music (and beyond), to make his own special brew. This live recording is a perfect reflection of what he loves and has discovered over the last couple of years. We hear shreds of deep techno, spaced out minimal, 80s inspired body music workouts, psychedelic oddities, proggy weird b-sides…and more; definitely not the easiest spread to put together. In Kobe’s hands these three and a half hours are a cruizin’ ride, produced in the dj booth he has built and danced-to by the community Brussels has been (re)building over the last decade … with Kuba’97 unquestionably at the heart of it.

Attention music lovers ! This is an ultra ultra special mix, since it is the long-awaited islas Basic Moves podcast. Ailsa Cavers aka islas and I started and ran the record label and club nights together for the first four years. As time takes things and things take time (and life rolls on (and off) and on) our paths have brought us back to sharing friendship, culture, and music again :)

islas also Ailsa is a creative centipede roaming the fields of art, design, music, literature and so much more. Originally from Reading (UK) but relocated to Bordeaux (FR) in the early 2000s where she studied at Ecole Des Beaux Arts before landing in what is now her hometown, Brussels (BE). Together with a bunch of like-minded souls she started the electronic music collective Planet, ran a music pop-up called OP-a with her bff Dana Kuehr…overall islas is a busy, gifted artistic bee that never stings.

Sooo to the music: 2 years in the making, this mix is a story of carefully selected, funny and open-minded club music dug up in the garden of electro house, quirky tech house, Detroit techno, and millennium minimal. All with an islas twist and topped with an English, French and Belgian sauce. Praise the lovely, steezy Ailsa alias islas forever !
