Celebrating 400 years of the Parkash Purab (coming into the world) of the 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, Basics of Sikhi presents this beautiful Gurbani Kirtan of Salok Mahalla 9.

Salok Mahalla 9 are letters written by the ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji in 1675 whilst being imprisoned in Delhi, India.

These letters were sent to the Sikhs in Sri Anandpur Sahib, including their mother, Mata Nanaki Ji, their wife, Mata Gujri Ji and their son, Sri Gobind Rai Ji, after the martyrdom of their three beloved Sikhs, Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji and Bhai Dayala Ji.

These letters epitomise Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s true state of detachment and emphasise the precious opportunity given to us in this life to connect to Vaheguru Ji.

If you read the translation of this shabad on iGurbani or SikhiToTheMax , you might find the translation a bit difficult to connect to. For this Katha (discourse), Bhai Baljit Singh improved on the interpretation of the shabad helping bring the meaning to life. In reflection of this shabad (hymn), Bhai Baljit Singh explains in depth how just like a child sometimes falls over, they can return to the safe laps of their parents, in the same way, we can rely and fall into the loving laps of that One, who resides in the energy of the Sangat (holy congregation). 

Bhai Baljit Singh explains the need for improving the translations of Gurbani and asks for the blessings of the Sangat to work on this project.

Gurmeet Singh from BC, Canada travels to the UK to support his wife attend the Journey of Compassion retreat. He arrives and falls in love with the warmth and spiritually uplifting sangat, so much so that when they left to go on holiday to Rome, a few days in, they were missing the sangat so much that they cancelled their holiday and came back to attend the Somerset monthly divan! In this conversation, we hear about the inspirational stories of Gurmeet Singh in his service as a lieutenant in the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services. Bhai Baljit Singh and Gurmeet Singh discuss judgement in sangat, the difficult journey of overcoming habits of addiction and the concept of service and devotion. Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasizes that you need to implement and follow the Sikhi path, rather than just talking about it. Knowing about it is great, but if you don't do anything with that knowledge, then it's not as helpful for you. Guru Ji tells the King Kaaroon that you know greed is bad for you, but if you don't do anything about it then what's the point

In the Habish desh, Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrives to liberate the king. But the king was a tyrant - who aimed to kill individuals from a specific faith. Guru Ji manifested a chola with many languages written on this chola - confusing the people but teaching a deeper message to the sangat. The king tried to drown Guru Ji but was not successful.
