When we came across this Berlin boss back in March of this year with his incredible “Fatima, The Struggle Is Real” on his own Burial Soil; we just knew this would be a perfect fit. From the futuristic artwork to the immaculate sound design giving a sense of otherworldly enlightenment.  

This very feeling vibrates through his label, getting like-minded people together who created their own futuristic statement and sending out a message that it is about the music (not about the self-marketing).  Have an entire catalogue of events with the likes of Kas:st, CYRK, Volruptus,  & DJ Frankie. Lord Jalapeños is back on the air with his sophisticated live-session, recorded especially for our podcast. As usual, we asked him a few questions.

1. Which artists has influenced you the most?

My drum teacher (and partner in crime when we used to play percussion together in his band), but also each musicians in my latest black metal/hardcore band - especially on the atmosphere side of a music - were artists that’ve teached me music but obviously shaped my taste. If we dive into Electro, I must talk about Dopplereffekt! Listening to this genre for the first time with their album "Gesamtkunstwerk" felt like a big slap in the face. The second slap came with François Dillinger’s album "Chasing The Red" : his vision of music and composing is unique, which only can leads to admiration and inspiration.

2. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

Mainly collabs! We’ve already began to work on ideas with François Dillinger, Obzerv and Cybereign. But the collab family is never big enough, so names like Bohll, Jensen Interceptor, Petr Drokov might also join the party as well :). Speaking about releases, I’m more than thrilled to announce that my first vinyl LP, "Loser Machine », will be released this summer on Science Cult. Also, you’ll see some Leopard appearing on International Chrome later this year. So yeah, I feel like a kid. I’ll give you more infos soon.

3. Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

Brokntoys, LDI Records, Micron Audio (please release more stuffs), Trust, Science Cult, are definitely labels to follow : they all share the envy of stretching the Electro sounds boundaries. But also, in a completely different style, Vastes Choses is a label to follow. They’ve this recognizable old and gritty tape type of sounds, heavily distorted, with a lot of rhythmic section inspired by Electro and Techno. About artists, the female Electro scene is coming up hard, rapidly growing up strong names : between Ekata, Imogen, Ivna J, Liza Aikin, Nastia Y, these artists needs full attention. But don’t forget to also keep your attention on DJ Stingray, Issu, My Boyfriend, R325, Tadan. Just to name a few.

4. What inspires you now to create music?

I enjoy more and more recording random stuffs with my phone (like the cheap version of field recording) : I’ve got sounds like the ring of a doorbell, the subway noise, a bunch of people talking, and I like to reshape them into something that will eventually leads me to a rhythm or a melodic part, and so on. What inspires me the most tho is how I feel at the moment (might sounds cheesy, sorry). Whether I’m feeling good or bad, it always feels natural to express myself through music. Even if it can takes from 1 up to 9 hours, I’ll simply stand behind my machines, turning knobs and pressing keys, until I’ve finished the track. It really has a catharsis effect on me.

This week we invited Krakow-based DJ Karolina Olivia better known as simply Olivia. Apart from playing solo she is a part of Chrono Bross collective together with her brother Kinzo Chrome, also a member of the crew behind famous Unsound Festival. Another Olivia's passion is organising parties. She was one of the founders of Krakow's club Radar, which is closed now. Luckily Olivia and her partner in crime Artur are still throwing solid parties with proper bookings in different locations.

As we find ourselves in a 2nd lockdown, we are proud to bring you our 2nd series; DECENNIUM, which celebrates 10 years of Natural Selection. We will bring you mixes and live sets recorded exclusively for Natural Selection, from a long list of our residents, past guests and other closely affiliated artists and friends. We feel in the current climate it is crucial to unify together our artists and supporters and we are so happy to be able to continue to provide a platform for music, whilst we are forced into this lockdown situation. Thank you to everyone involved for bringing this together and making it possible.

Kicking off the series is none other than Dez Williams (Elektronik Religion, Mechatronica), an artist who we hold huge appreciation for. Hailing from Holy Island, off the coast of North Wales, Dez Williams began his musical journey at a very early age and has become one of the most reputable producers and machine enthusiasts to grace the scene today. Inspired by many of the classic Chicago / Detroit / Electro / Techno producers, his sound is unique, uncompromising and unpredictable. His vision of Techno is deep and futuristic with a heavy dose of machine funk. His tracks can range from driving Techno to melancholic and dark synthesiser orchestrations, ghostly deep listening, straight up Electro cuts and beyond. Within his sounds are vast amounts of detail for the listener to decipher. Emotions transmitted through mathematics and code. 

Williams' tracks have found their way into the sets of DJ's like Dave Clarke, Adam X, John Peel, Ellen Allien, Mike Dred and Rob Hall. His debut LP 'Elektronik Religion' for the SCSI label was hailed as "One of the very few truly great electro albums of the new century". Dez has since released on an array of heavyweight labels including Ai, Brokntoys, Diffuse Reality, Mechatronica, Shipwrec and his own label Elektronik Religion. 

We feel honoured to have him open our series with this lethal set made exclusively for Natural Selection.
