Mostly for supporters of the Toon(NEWCASTLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB that is!)  and lovers of good music everywhere! (ho ho..gawd wot a scream!). Nicked some of Geordie Ridleys lyrics (only most of em!) from 'The Blaydon Races'.  Have now put 'Balmbras' in the lyric when for many years it was my mistake to have put 'Blaydon' in there. LYRICS BELOW. Tribute to my city and the city where millions live, Newcastle upon Tyne. My songs R mostly about all things Newcastle, Newcastle United FC,  Bobby Robson, the excellent NE band Lanterns on the Lake, Alan Shearer, George Stephenson, The Tyne Bridge and the Mucky Angel, ....well, you get the idea!
'The Mucky Angel' refered to in the song is the Boer War memorial in the Haymarket, an angel mounted on a high plinth that has been the home to countless pigeons over the years, which is why she's SOOOOO mucky. 'The reform bill guy' mentioned in the song is Lord Grey, the NE man who passed important voting reform legislation in 1832.  Like the Angel he is also on a plinth, but half a mile away on top of Monument Metro station, Grey Street - lucky old Lord Grey & the pigeons, eh?. We don't do too badly for plinths in the NE! I wrote this piece in the mindset of a person of power... an heroic superhero. Think of Captain America, Thor, Wonder Woman...a soundtrack that could accompany a battle scene in the movie.

Bass player in Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprouts first real band 'AVALON' (er.... that is his first band to have a drummer AND a P.A.) although when he joined we were called 'CAUGHT IN THE ACT' so its not really true that 'AVALON' was his first anything!! Gawd! Aint life complicated? This name change occured after a handful of gigs. 'CAUGHT IN THE ACT' were Tony Coyle, John the drummer, Leo McCabe, Paddy, and me. All made contributions of a greater/lesser extent to songwriting. 10 months together and then Tony, Paddy and Leo were all gone and new talents came in. Pete Archbold and Paul Dean made us a twin lead guitar band for a time and Steve Daggett replaced PMc as lead singer, songwriter. He played a mean flying 'V' guitar. This Avalon Mk 2 lasted a year. Then I went back to collecting stamps and saving empty milk cartons. (anyone got a spare 1856 British Guiana One-Cent Magenta I could have? ps if u want to collect milk cartons make sure u wash em thoroughly before cluttering the place up with em)
