The song expresses the feelings and experience of a girl who allows herself to fall for the same guy over and over again.  He just leads her on repeatedly and then ignores her after his ego is satisfied by her attention. And yes, this is based on a real-life story that Cliff and I witnessed with one of our best friends.

The inspiration for this adult contemporary song we call “In The Moonlight” came from a 1992 poem written by Cliff Frierson called “Fun In The Moonlight”.  As the two of us began to put the main elements of the poem to music, we challenged ourselves to create descriptive juxtaposed metaphors such as waves “gently crashing”, clouds “swiftly floating”, etc.  

The final inspiration came from the 1935 standard penned by Artie Shaw, “Begin the Beguine”.  We wanted to create the feeling of “I'm with you once more under the stars, and down by the shore an orchestra's playing; and even the palms seem to be swaying…”  But instead of letting “the love that was once a fire remain an ember”, we wanted this fiery love to ignite under the stars as the lovers take flight together into eternity.
