Andreas Baumecker launched his DJ career in the early 90s, a Frankfurt native coming of age in the halcyon days of his country’s reunification. His first stop was the city’s storied and centrally located Romantica, then its affiliate Intimbar where reps from house label Playhouse picked him up for buying duties at record store Delirium. After an uptick in local bookings, he made a brief stop in Mannheim for more of the same before moving to Berlin in 2004, where a recently opened Panorama Bar scouted him as resident and offered him the role of in-house booker for its Berghain operations. As word got out and the city started to draw larger crowds he became a fundamental force in crafting the club’s story. Hesitant to define the upstairs-downstairs split as house and techno, he practices his preachings through an approach that embraces a range of different sounds. ‘Surprise is important’ and his 25,000 strong vinyl collection lends a hand in the process, an assemblage that oscillates between disco, house, electro, techno, breakbeat and pop; the key is to capture the spirit of a crowd. This strategy has borne not only his label Freundinnen (put on hiatus in 2007, relaunched in 2023), but a lasting collaboration with sparring partner Sam Barker as half or Barker and Baumecker (four 12” records and two albums on his alma mater’s imprint Ostgut Ton to prove it). nd_baumecker deals in all things funky and uplifting, a thread of life-affirming melodies and historically literate beats that drive seamlessly forward. Bassiani Podcast 255 alludes to his well stocked portfolio of references, with hints of disco and balearic house, it's more of what his fans know and love to usher in the warmer months; this latest episode is full of spacey tenor, refreshing and gently rolling, breezy chill-out expertly compiled by this fabled German veteran.

For the June 2025 episode, Relictronica welcomes Mike Starr, a British-born, Berlin-based artist whose career spans more than two decades of precision, soul, and deep-rooted sonic storytelling.

A regular presence at Berghain / Panorama Bar, Tresor, RSO, and Heideglühen, Mike is a key figure in Berlin’s nightlife and far beyond — with sets that have moved dance floors from Bassiani, The Cause, and De School, to Funk Club Mexico City, Signal NYC, and Hi Ibiza.

His sound is a living dialogue between 808 electro, NY disco, Detroit techno, and UK tech house — always personal, always in motion. With a distinctive sense of rhythm and space, Mike’s sets carry weight, warmth, and a quiet authority that refuses excess while inviting full immersion.

Based in Manchester, Ben Moulson aka @apriluk has firmly rooted himself in the UK scene with his hyperactive crate digging habits and diversity in sound. Whether it is the 10pm ambient hour, or the 6am sweat box his record bag will answer the call. In his own words: “This mix explores the gloomier cuts of dubstep, techno and bass that currently circulate my record bag. Mixed from the perspective of a dancefloor warm-up, it kicks off in the slow and steppy realm before picking up pace with wiggly left-field club sounds in the later minutes!”.

Next up in the Bassiani series comes British talent Andy Luff. With London’s growing commercialisation and NIMBY-style aversion to creative pursuits, it’s a mark of great mettle to have carved out a flourishing space on its turf, but Andy and his crew has exactly succeeded in doing this. Their bootleg and off-the-cuff raves began as a guestlist only set up, bringing together friends and their friends for events where the DJs and quality soundsystems took centre stage. And it all seems to have struck the right chord: growing slowly but steadily, with Andy now living in Amsterdam, he has taken picnics signature sound to the Dutch capital where the events are flourishing, now in its second decade and with a long-standing collaboration with London superclub Fabric and Amsterdams uniquely intimate Bret, their format is something much needed in keeping the European hotspots raving into the coming years. Picnic is still much focused on throwing some of the best parties in town, and now putting out records under their homonymous label. The imprint and Andy’s benchmark, an ice-cool mix of progressive house, electro and trance, perky beats with a confident bent, unpretentious sounds for a fun night’s dancing. Sometimes it’s really that simple. On the 7th of March, Andy brought a taste of his sound to Tbilisi with a banger set at Horoom and this one’s a live recording from the night. Andy fuses retro synthwork and wobbly percussions to fun effect. Misty-eyed melodies and infectious bass lines from this eclectic supplier of good times out are ever present in this recording. A scintillating first appearance and hopefully the first of many.
