Here in Tbilisi, DJ/Producer Beka Wu is cutting a dash as versatile new kid on the block. Fast becoming a favourite on the local scene, his two careers (one as fledgling music maker, second as light designer) give his sound a unique palette for space that reverberates both figuratively and physically. Think Basic Channel plus a few BPMs for dancefloor consumption and take Bassiani Podcast 149 as a case in point: this one’s effortlessly chill, a prime selection of quivering and groovy cuts to add to the podcast catalogue. Racing ambient bliss for afterhours dreamers, delivered by this fresh and promising Georgian talent.

Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.

Somov Records head Ignez is up next with an unmissable techno number that’ll make you sweat. A younger self dropped the stuffy confines of his childhood on the Dutch coast and fled to Berlin as so many do, and there began to cultivate a sound that has placed him firmly among some of his talented and much talked about peers. The DJ/producer credits the seaside upbringing with instilling a deep respect for the rolling tides and endless sands, natural references that are deeply embodied in his hypnotising and immersive rhythms. His occasional return to home turf as resident of Amsterdam-based party series Eerste Communie has also played a significant role in his musical development and found him willing publishers in the likes of Token and SK_eleven, as well as a sparring partner in Berlin heavyweight Rødhåd (with whom he shares two EPs). It’s techno in purest form, bewitching loops that pulsate like those long ago shores. In that sound his ascetic beats are flanked by the most minimal detail and rely on raw percussive might to mesmerise his listener. A dancefloor portal to another world; transcendent stuff for sure. From small club settings to festivals on a larger scale Ignez brings a kind of magic that’s hard to turn a deaf ear to, Bassiani Podcast 220’s proof that he’ll pull those tricks at home too. A hour of virgin, mechanical beats that daze and enthral, a staunch reminder of techno’s visceral power and of why, for so many, it’s such a ruling passion.

NDRX has become a major figure in the electronic music scene on the strength of his precision-tooled sound, which seethes with raw physical power and a lithe, lean strength. Under the title CIRCLES, NOIRAH presents his first collection of dance music, focusing on timeless Hard Groovy Techno.
