"With this mix, I aimed to make the techno mix I want to hear—both as someone on the floor and as someone listening in headphones. This collection of songs is focused primarily on theme and narrative. My primary goal was using layering and track selection to bring story and pacing to the forefront. There are lots of different textures, styles, and eras within this mix, but cumulatively it represents my definition of a modern approach to classic techno: raw, soulful, rhythmic, stripped-back, and futuristic."

Viennese freshman Arthur Robert has eagerly carved a niche in the collective psyche of late with a handful of self-released titles and a string of hypnotic EPs on Len Faki’s Figure. These are the fruits of a studio routine outside of which he’s often found piously performing ruminant sets and passing on knowledge to a clique of eager students. Since his early 20s based in Amsterdam, the symbiotic exchange between that city and Detroit is evident in his and his peers’ work. There’s an extra twist though: a self-professed flair for trip-hop, ambient, breakbeat, drum ’n’ bass and movie soundtracks. In fact, it’s in his work’s focus on the psychedelic, groovy and atmospheric that a solid reference to many beloved sci-fi classics can be found. For Bassiani Podcast 129 he tries his hand at scoring a fiction all of his own, at once twitchy, escapist and modern.

Threading his way into our mix series with two hours of mind-expanding hardware magic involving 3 CDJs, an analogue drum machine, FX plus some analogue random modular sequencers, Tolkachev hits hard and sure, sending us in orbit up a galaxy far, far away, only he can shepherd his enlightened flock to. Flush with trippy flights out techno’s outer space and proper floor-destroying plot twists, this one promises to have you zoning out of this world entirely. Enjoy the journey.

Paris based DJ/Producer Benales is something of a veteran act in his native city of light. He’s played at Laurent Garnier’s Rex, the much-missed Concrete as well as La Station and Berlin staple Tresor. Since the 90s’ twilight years he’s crafted and perfected a raw and utilitarian stripe of techno that’s seen him share the spotlight with the likes of DVS1, Steve Bicknell and James Ruskin. Those references should give you an idea of his sound’s direction of travel, a deep order of ascetic basslines stripped of frills as the Motor City intended. And that goes for his productions too: with names like Construct Re-Form, Sino, Freddy K’s KEY Vinyl, Mitsubasa and Analog Solutions a few of the labels putting out his work (and there’s more in the making). His keen ear and feeling for crowd have earned him an eager audience over the years, and reputation as a go-to for organisers of legendary clubnights Europe-wide. If you’re curious and looking to let yourself fall under his spell, this latest dose of nefarious and wall-shaking beats has you covered. Taking the helm of our next podcast iteration, Madrid-based DJ and producer Psyk jumps in with a beast of a two-hour jaunt into frantic techno hyperspace. Having dished out some highly magnetic floor wares for the likes of Tresor, Mote Evolver or Modularz and his own imprint, Non Series, Psyk sure knows how to steer crowds into some sort of super-conscious euphoria. Expert provider of big-room ready dynamics and paranoid narratives, Psyk flings us into orbit with his impeccably laid-down assembly of industrial-minded rhythms and murky, oomph-loaded grooves hatching out of the dark like alien eggs from a drifting Nostromo.

From Europe’s southern tip in the Gibraltar-facing port city of Algeciras comes ORBE, the Spanish techno enthusiast whose potent beats have hammered out a pedigree path both as DJ and producer. Prevailing winds carried Fernando Sanz first to Seville to study sound engineering, later to Madrid where the fertile scene allowed him to build a community of music-minded friends that have put that city squarely on the map. Under these conditions, his work (what he terms a means of ‘contacting the future, the avant-garde’) has developed into something much deeper and more sophisticated. His love of artists like Brian Eno and Boards of Canada, and roots in breakbeat and drum and bass have informed a style that’s allowed him to take up the mantle as one of Spain’s most interesting talents. Under his self-titled record label (est. 2014) come his signature killer tunes, and in his work with names like Eduardo de la Calle and labels like Token, Hivern Discs, Axis and Mote Evolver a pole position at the forefront of modern techno. Fresh off his set on the Bassiani floor (14th March) comes this next Bassiani mix. Tensile rhythms that lurch ahead with supernatural power, an involute web of intelligent sounds that attest to his skill as selector. Bassiani Podcast 254 is an hour-long mash up of elfin beats, a vibrating hymn to the sounds of tomorrow, Orbe at the top of his game.

Originally a dancefloor staple in the mid-90s, Systematic Breakdown stood out for its unconventional main synth motif—its movement still cuts through a set with urgency and grit. Famous for its massive buildup and release, drawing directly from the raw energy of early DCE live shows.

Gyre 303 locks into a driving acid bassline that channels classic DCE-era techno, rolling with uncompromising momentum. Solarize blends fluttering acid pulses with whaling PWM synth leads that feel like a solar storm tapping at your consciousness.

Outback Uplink captures the moment DCE first sent its signal to the world. Before global connectivity meant anything, this track was our line cast into the void—an announcement from Australia: “We are here.”

Finally, Angels carries a it’s message in a secret in its groove. Originally cut in reverse by the legendary Ron Murphy—Detroit master cutter, whose sonic fingerprints are all over early DCE history—this backwards cut is the hidden “Easter egg.” It blends distortion, hip-hop-style beats, acid bass, and reverse cymbals into one collision of experimentation. Now it returns as proof that DCE has always been pushing sonic genre boundaries..

The early DNA of DCE visualised in the labels “DNA strip,” the tactile presence of hand numbering, the backwards-cut tribute—these are the markers of a release that bridges past and future. Systematic Breakdown is a key part of the labels history, but it’s alive again!
