Marcel Dettmann is a rarity in electronic music. His precocious disdain for rules has been one of the key ingredients for a decades-spanning arc that started sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall (with early exposure to post-punk, industrial and synth pop) and continues to this day. His leitmotif is instantly recognisable, expertly layered, playfully syncopated, and though his influence is everywhere, no one quite manages to copy his pioneering sound. His formative influences surface frequently, serious atonal arrangements that follow the logic of EBM descending into a flurry of protean melodies; maybe this versatility is why, for a long time now, Dettmann’s sound has been so synonymous with a city in flux. A true legend in the electronic music scene, Efdemin embarked on his musical journey with his debut release in 2004, followed by his first album in 2006. Based in Berlin, he's not only a resident at the iconic Berghain club but also the curator of his vinyl-only label, naïf. His music is an embodiment of serenity and sophistication, characterized by an elegant darkness, subtle beauty, and a sense of unwavering composure. Efdemin's impressive discography spans LPs and 12-inch records on renowned labels like Dial, Curle, and Ostgut Ton. JakoJako (@jakojako_live) always wanted to make music and her self-confessed hyperactivity ultimately led to her getting the most joy out of playing about with machines and patching up synths. These days the Berghain resident is a celebrated live act and DJ who draws on the considerable knowledge she picked up working at Berlin's legendary synth shop SchneidersLaden, but she has also worked on several high-profile motion sensor dance projects at places like The Royal Albert Hall. Her smart sound designs and unique rhythms have landed on Leisure System, Tresor and Figure and she has a new EP coming on Mute this June.

Her mix for us this week features a sneak preview of one of the tracks from that EP as well as mixing up music from Alaric, Siege, Altinbas and many more. It's full of high-speed sounds couched loosely in techno but with moods and textures borrowed from industrial, minimal and even trance as things reach an emotional peak late on. Though she broke through as a live act, this set shows JakoJako can now speak just as freely through the decks.

Close to the original 90s atmospheric techno vibe, her approach shares that taste for spaciousness and sense-awakening uplift, fitting in nicely in the tradition of dub techno whilst opening onto more ambient-oid detours and further leftfield-friendly electronics. Delving in the essence of techno as a tool for emancipation, her mixes traverse a wealth of landscapes and territories, never quite sitting cozy but roaming in search of new forms to embrace, new geometries to integrate. A musical language in constant motion, where expectations wash up against the beauty of revelation.

Helmut Geier’s career in music is just about as long as they come, starting out a DJ freshman back in 1978 and witnessing numerous of the most notable revolutions in sound and politics to have changed the world since. So many of electronic’s foremost names, like cult Berlin record dispensary Hard Wax, or Tresor and E-Werk where he held residencies, or even Limelight in New York, all bear his mark to some degree or other. Then there’s his releases, collaborations and remixes, and forays into the world of fashion, numerous enough they’d take a while to tally. His formula for longevity has been a chameleon-like ability to stay tapped into the zeitgeist and guide its course, International Deejay Gigolo Records has been a permanent conduit for the mission, his early championing of the electroclash genre and work with talents like Ms. Kittin, Laurent Garnier and Vitalic another notable moment in the last half century. One thing’s for certain: DJ Hell’s not planning on going anywhere; his work’s at times anthemic, at times high camp, but constantly pulling from a lifetime of references both past and new and creating something new from the embers. Bassiani Podcast 240 is a very special live recording from Hell’s set at Bassiani’s Time Passages night back on September 27th, a three hour instalment heavy with 80s synthwork, vocoder frequencies and pounding bass. Yet another watermark from a cultural legend.

Here is a set recording from one of my most valuable events, CODA by Ratherlost x Pax-Roama at Lofi. I put a massive effort into that night, thinking about the past and future of my DJ career. I communicated best with the dancers and could express myself in a way that only I could. Sometimes I feel insecure about my life as a DJ. CODA gave me all the answers.

Recorded live as part of Bassiani’s New Year celebrations comes a very special four-hour bout from DJ talent 98dots. From Tbilisi to his chosen home of Brooklyn, Nikoloz Gedevanishvili’s sets are deeply enmeshed with his Georgian roots, slick selections that sprint across emotions and genres. He’s been on this mission since his teenage years, and played at the likes of Bassiani, Basement, The Lot and Mutant Radio (he has a show here), pushing a sound that’s highly charged with political energy and community tailored. These dog whistle rhythms are versatile and packed with layers of sound and percussion that snake along their cosmic route, spanning textbook techno, ambient and more experimental fare. Becoming a keystone in both his local Tbilisi and New York scenes, he’s kept sight of the grassroots magic while playing alongside global names like DJ Nobu, Jane Fitz, Wata Igarashi, DMX Krew and Roman Flügel. This latest instalment is an acid-tinged endurance race, four hours of rampaging techno of a distinctly 98dots stripe, rollercoaster beats of the type Nikoloz does best, marching frequencies to usher in the next half decade.
