A short decade ago, Galcher Lustwerk seemed to come full speed out of obscurity with a moment defining mix that landed him and his sound at the centre of everyone’s attention. 100% Galcher was a blend of his unreleased works, borrowing from the alternative Americana of midwestern house and urban focused hip-hop, as well as another of his motherland’s key exports: film. The Cleveland native subsequently pushed that vision and its variants further with releases on Tsuba and the founding of label Lustwerk Music, as well as releases under aliases Road Hog, The Fock, Macchiatto, 420 and Power User; the pandemic didn’t slow him down either, with another batch of releases that spanned both rap and ambient with equal skill. A polyglot when it comes to musical genre: for most there’s a little daylight between hip-hop and electronic music, but for Galcher the two are at the vanguard of new sounds, genres united in a constant push into the unknown and discovery of the new, a key modus in his creative process. If any of this is difficult to envision, think lo-fi melodies and velvet smooth house with his very own voice thrown in, a dreamy patchwork of inspirations that are given form by his limitless innovation and nerd-level turnover of hardware. Bassiani Podcast 224 is a four-hour whopper recorded live at Horoom, the DJ/producer’s usual antics in more danceable format, laid back house and a measure of the ‘noodly’ jazz sounds he’s known for, with the supporting role of a driving bassline. Victor's (@victormgcpwr) superpower is his ability to adapt. He is a famously versatile selector who can impress a niche crowd at his Blitz Club residency in Munich, or light up cult festivals like Nachtdigital. The diversity of his solo sets is matched by his skill for finding common ground with other selectors, which is why he famously loves playing back-to-backs. From syncopated, break-riddled techno to ambient dub and everything in between, his selections are unified by their diversity. Victor also heads up his own Main Power label and this week plays Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia.

As a warm-up for that, he has put together a superb 75-minute mix that starts with one of his traditionally atmospheric and beatless openers before taking flight on lithe club rhythms. Genres are meaningless in his hands as the German transitions between deft percussive workouts, swinging drums and dubbed-out soundscapes that are always on the move, never easy to predict, but completely absorbing for both mind and body.

Co-founder of Norway’s future-facing Ute crew, Ekkel (Teo Bachs) has a front-row seat in the cockpit on their psychedelic flavoured quest. From their woodland beginnings they’ve staked a claim to freedom through music and community, and expanded to include brick and mortar club nights and a self-titled label for the release of their magnetic and mysterious techno sounds. Forest-bath electronics that take stock of Scandinavia’s ambient tradition and cross-pollinate it with a measure of acid, trance and midnight sun. Teo’s own steadily rising number of productions (side project H25 included) has fleshed out Ute’s vision with a personal twist, and there’s another three scheduled for the fall. The past few years too have seen him hard at work exploring the possibilities of sound in a lonely cabin as part of Solar Alliance, collaborating with S.O.N.S on Korean label Junction Forest and producing many more unreleased tracks, some of which you’ll hear here first for a very special number. It’s a wormhole trip that marches headlong from the shadows, shimmering and physical beats that heave and swell, tribal breaks that flit from track to track and build a cathartic mood that harks back to Ute’s woodland roots. Living, breathing, banging techno from an artist defining the highly-textured new frontier of the sound in 2024.

Lindsey Wang, AKA Polygonia, has an amorphous style you could call organic—or, better yet, harmonious. She interweaves unfamiliar elements with a mercurial touch. Wang can make something completely otherworldly sound totally, well, natural. It's made her a fixture everywhere from Munich's BLITZ to major festivals like Sustain-Release and Draaimolen.

Unsurprisingly, Wang is not one to be pinned down. Be it the sound design-anchored side project Lyder, her own label QEONE, or co-producing an album's worth of experimental percussion alongside jazz drummer Simon Popp, it's fair to say her personal output matches the feverish energy of her mixes. There's multidisciplinary, and then there's Wang: Poly-disciplinary, you might say.

Wang's entry into the RA Podcast series is no different, another stellar emphasis of her artistry. RA.955 is a voyage into wild variations of texture, rhythm and feeling, guided along by the principle of endless metamorphosis. Supple driving grooves meet crinkled surfaces, scuttling hi-hats meet chattering sonics, and good luck keeping hold of a consistent drum pattern for long. Behold a living organism raised by the club and the great outdoors in equal measure.

Atsushi Maeda, one of the founders and organizers of rural  festival, returned to the DJ booth this year after a 12-year absence.

The time he started his set rainfall was more intense, but despite the stormy weather, the audience danced enthusiastically until the end, creating an interactive techno piece that resembled a tug of war between the audience and the DJ. Enjoy a techno journey that deeply affects your body and spirit, as if you are running through a tunnel with no light in sight, surrounded by a sense of relief.

Weekly Beats 2024 - Week 52. (Final Week!)

Holy bleeperdybloop, I have no idea where I pulled this one from.
Not too satisfied with it, but that'll do synthpig, that'll do.

Between Christmas obligations and me ending the year the same way I started it (fever, throat infection, nose/ears/throat full with sticky goo), I really didn't feel like doing any music. I just want to drink tea with honey and watch lame cartoons.

But fook it, I pulled it off. 52 tracks in 52 weeks.
Between learning to cope with extreme tinnitus, many visits to the hospital, and an insane amount of sleep deprivation...
This challenge was one of the few things that kept me sane this year.

I wish I had mingled more with my fellow weekly beaters and gotten to know you all better.
But such is life.

Thank you all for your kind comments, and you should be proud of making it to the end of this challenge.
Also, massive hats off to those who will continue doing this in 2025.
