Marcel Dettmann is a rarity in electronic music. His precocious disdain for rules has been one of the key ingredients for a decades-spanning arc that started sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall (with early exposure to post-punk, industrial and synth pop) and continues to this day. His leitmotif is instantly recognisable, expertly layered, playfully syncopated, and though his influence is everywhere, no one quite manages to copy his pioneering sound. His formative influences surface frequently, serious atonal arrangements that follow the logic of EBM descending into a flurry of protean melodies; maybe this versatility is why, for a long time now, Dettmann’s sound has been so synonymous with a city in flux. @boris is kind of a charismatic, multifunctional weapon in the Berlin club life. His musical roots reach back to the mid 80s, when he lived in New York for four years.

After the old OstGut/Panorama Bar closed in 2003, Boris played in almost every club in Berlin, but when the follow up club Berghain opened its doors in 2004, he became to be resident there.

October 14th saw the beginning of Bassiani’s new party series ‘Curated by Resident’, with in-house selector Kancheli taking charge of booking and Anthony Rother jumping in as headline pick behind the decks. Rother is a German institution whose ghost in the machine vocoder-vocals and dark electro formulations dominated an era in club history and left an indelible mark on many who followed. For a few years, he took a break and let his past productions simmer, full concentration on hybrid sets and heading back to his Offenbach studio to turn whatever energy clubnights gave him into tracks. Back to releasing and touring the globe, he payed Tbilisi a visit this year. Bassiani Podcast 150 is a live recording straight from the Bassiani floor, a two hour mix of bionic bleeps and hair-raising basslines, Rother’s unmistakable fusion of man and machine is very much back with a vengeance.

As you would expect from the Dutch DJ and producer, his performance reflects more than two decades of clubbing and perfecting a sound that is often attributed to his adopted home of Detroit. ﻿

Two hours set of a languid ascension, filled with unsettling yet reassuring tracks all the way through. Add varied influences, some heavy groove, a big pinch of skill, and you get his trademark. There is no doubt why the artist has been performing for so many years, and this recording is further irrefutable evidence.

Marina Rubinstein loves to DJ, but even when she’s perched in the booth, weaving together a invigorating assortment of hypnotic acid, ’90s rave and pumping techno, her mind is on the dancefloor. After all, it was on dancefloor that this Russian-born, Israeli-reared artist fell in love with techno in the first place. Long before she started playing records and adopted the Dr. Rubinstein moniker, she was a self-declared “true raver” in Tel Aviv, and it was during those long nights of partying that she eventually came to see dancing as a kind of meditation. “When the music is right,” she explains, “you can free your mind and just dance without thinking of anything. For me, it’s the best feeling in life, something that brings absolute happiness.”
