A short decade ago, Galcher Lustwerk seemed to come full speed out of obscurity with a moment defining mix that landed him and his sound at the centre of everyone’s attention. 100% Galcher was a blend of his unreleased works, borrowing from the alternative Americana of midwestern house and urban focused hip-hop, as well as another of his motherland’s key exports: film. The Cleveland native subsequently pushed that vision and its variants further with releases on Tsuba and the founding of label Lustwerk Music, as well as releases under aliases Road Hog, The Fock, Macchiatto, 420 and Power User; the pandemic didn’t slow him down either, with another batch of releases that spanned both rap and ambient with equal skill. A polyglot when it comes to musical genre: for most there’s a little daylight between hip-hop and electronic music, but for Galcher the two are at the vanguard of new sounds, genres united in a constant push into the unknown and discovery of the new, a key modus in his creative process. If any of this is difficult to envision, think lo-fi melodies and velvet smooth house with his very own voice thrown in, a dreamy patchwork of inspirations that are given form by his limitless innovation and nerd-level turnover of hardware. Bassiani Podcast 224 is a four-hour whopper recorded live at Horoom, the DJ/producer’s usual antics in more danceable format, laid back house and a measure of the ‘noodly’ jazz sounds he’s known for, with the supporting role of a driving bassline. Dual Dimension EP marks a milestone for Fides Records releasing its 20th entry in the main catalog. This split EP features labelhead Z.I.P.P.O and eclectic duo Tapefeed, each contributing two tracks to create a unique blend of sounds that capture the essence of techno. 

Side A opens with Tapefeed's "Hellz Bellz" a percussive workout that delivers stripped-down, peak-time energy, perfect for driving dance floors into a frenzy. Als fünfte Ausgabe unseres Podcasts präsentieren wir euch Jan Goertz. Jan hat sich in über zehn Jahren einen eigenen detailreichen Sound erarbeitet, der durch eine umfangreiche Collection an Tracks und Tools geprägt ist. Besonders bekannt ist er für sein 4-Deck-Mixing, mit dem er immer wieder die Grenzen des Technischen auslotet. Diese Herangehensweise hat ihn zu einem festen Bestandteil der Techno-Szene gemacht – als DJ, Produzent und als Veranstalter seiner eigenen Partyreihe. 

INTERVIEW
Du hast eine eigene Veranstaltungsreihe namens „Hyperfokus“, wodurch zeichnet sie sich aus?

Die Idee ist ein bisschen mit den gängigen Konventionen zu brechen, wenn es um das Cluberleben geht. Ich möchte gerne, dass Menschen für einen bestimmten Sound und den intimen Vibe, nicht für Headliner, zu uns kommen. Für das Booking liegt der Fokus vor allem auf Inhalt und Authentizität der Künstler*innen. Ein großer Dank an dieser Stelle an Sofi, die mich dabei unterstützt.

Welche Künstler oder Alben haben dich am meisten beeinflusst?

Das ist natürlich immer sehr abhängig von der jeweiligen Lebensphase und über all die Jahre ich hätte ich wohl immer wieder andere Antworten gegeben. Momentan inspirieren mich sehr: Polygonia, Quelza, DVS1, Malin Genie, Casual Treatment. Ein besonderes Album und ein Artist, von dem ich productionwise allgemein viel halte: Stefan Goldmann – Alluvium.

Gibt es ein Projekt oder eine Vision, die du eines Tages unbedingt verwirklichen möchtest?

Das gibt es und das verwirkliche ich auch gerade - seit einiger Zeit arbeite ich schon an einem ganz besonderen Projekt. Mehr kann und will ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht verraten.
Und natürlich ist da noch der Traum von einer eigenen Location, das wird irgendwann ganz sicher auch passieren. Ob Club oder Off Location - das wird die Zukunft zeigen.

For the fifth edition of our podcast we present you Jan Goertz. Jan has spent over ten years developing his own detailed sound, which is characterised by a vast collection of tracks and tools. He is particularly known for his 4-deck mixing, with which he constantly pushes the boundaries of technology. This approach has made him an integral part of the techno scene - as a DJ, as a producer and as the organiser of his own event series.

INTERVIEW
You have your own event series called "Hyperfokus", what makes it special?

The idea is to break with the usual conventions a little when it comes to the club experience. I would like people to come to us for a certain sound and the intimate vibe, not for headliners. The focus of the booking is primarily on the content and authenticity of the artists. A big thank you at this point to Sofi, who supports me in this.

Which artists or albums have influenced you the most?

That of course always depends on the phase of life and over the years I would probably have given different answers. At the moment I am very inspired by: Polygonia, Quelza, DVS1, Malin Genie, Casual Treatment. A special album and an artist who I generally think highly of in terms of production: Stefan Goldmann – Alluvium.

Is there a project or a vision that you definitely want to realise one day?

There is one and I am currently making it happen - I have been working on a very special project for some time. I cannot and do not want to reveal any more at this point.
And of course there is the dream of having my own location, that will definitely happen at some point. Whether it is a club or off location - only time will tell.

This one’s a firm nod to London and its unique cultural genome. Tasha got her start in drum and bass, with early support from DJ Flight and Storm, regular slots at Renegade Hardware, and a side shift at central London’s now defunct record store BM Soho. That, and her own party-going forays threw a growing fixation with techno into the mix and it’s here at the crossroads of these two influences that Tasha started to find her voice. For four years starting 2009, and now again on a monthly basis since 2018, she’s held down a residency on Rinse FM, and the distinctly homespun feel of the outlet has left a permanent mark on her sound, one that’s intimately tied to both community and the station’s roots as a fledgling pirate station way back when. Equally formative was Shoreditch venue Plastic People, where she took charge of event programming alongside Sigha, a role she followed with the starting of her own solo venture titled ’Neighbourhood’ - a bringing together of artists in her orbit among which figure names like Pangaea, Pariah, Ben Sims, Zenker Brothers and Stenny. It now calls FOLD home, but the name, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better one, has stuck. It also stuck to the label that project spawned in 2016 and all the subsequent releases that kept that vision going. Tasha’s art, like the life it inhabits, is in constant movement. Brisk basslines with a heavy debt to London’s wealth of musical styles, openness of spirit and DIY fervour. Bassiani Podcast 232 is a banger, 70 minutes of contagious rhythmic momentum; kinetic techno with a UK twist and a point of inflection that’s firmly rooted in the city she calls home. Welcome to the neighbourhood.

Benales is a DJ and producer known for his unique blend of raw, dark, and deep techno and house, with nods to Detroit influences. Based in France, he has been making waves in the underground techno scene since the late 90s. With an extensive vinyl collection and a talent for selecting tracks that resonate with crowds, Benales has become a respected DJ in Europe, regularly playing at top clubs such as Tresor, Rex Club, Radion or Le Sucre, and sharing the stage with renowned artists such as DVS1, Zadig, Surgeon, Steve Bicknell, Dj Pete, and James Ruskin.

Aside from his skills behind the decks, Benales is also a gifted music producer. Filip Storsveen returns to the Bassiani Podcast following a first stint as half of Omformer, this time as solo act Oprofessionell. The Oslo-based co-founder of rave entente Uteklubb (and constituent imprint UTE.REC) draws a wealth of inspiration from the aesthetic of 90s trance, a fully packaged set of sounds, images and for many of a generation, memories, that enshrine a moment in electronic music with particular resonance today. Cyclical revivals are just that, but there’s something especially felt in the speed-saturated sound that’s taken over not only his native Norway, but neighbouring nordic lands, an acknowledgement of its homegrown forest-rave culture, something parallel to the speed at which the world seems to be tipping into exponential overdrive. Storsveen and collaborators Mikkel Rev and Alpha Tracks are flying that flag high above the parapet. And as a means of escape, it delivers large on warm and fuzzy nostalgia, a method by which the creative spirits of the past are reborn today just when we need them most. From releases on his co-run label to a string of contagious live sets, Oprofessionell’s ambit is widening and the ethos of nordic rave gains ever more traction. From Europe’s southern tip in the Gibraltar-facing port city of Algeciras comes ORBE, the Spanish techno enthusiast whose potent beats have hammered out a pedigree path both as DJ and producer. Prevailing winds carried Fernando Sanz first to Seville to study sound engineering, later to Madrid where the fertile scene allowed him to build a community of music-minded friends that have put that city squarely on the map. Under these conditions, his work (what he terms a means of ‘contacting the future, the avant-garde’) has developed into something much deeper and more sophisticated. His love of artists like Brian Eno and Boards of Canada, and roots in breakbeat and drum and bass have informed a style that’s allowed him to take up the mantle as one of Spain’s most interesting talents. Under his self-titled record label (est. 2014) come his signature killer tunes, and in his work with names like Eduardo de la Calle and labels like Token, Hivern Discs, Axis and Mote Evolver a pole position at the forefront of modern techno. Fresh off his set on the Bassiani floor (14th March) comes this next Bassiani mix. Tensile rhythms that lurch ahead with supernatural power, an involute web of intelligent sounds that attest to his skill as selector. Bassiani Podcast 254 is an hour-long mash up of elfin beats, a vibrating hymn to the sounds of tomorrow, Orbe at the top of his game.

Andreas Baumecker launched his DJ career in the early 90s, a Frankfurt native coming of age in the halcyon days of his country’s reunification. His first stop was the city’s storied and centrally located Romantica, then its affiliate Intimbar where reps from house label Playhouse picked him up for buying duties at record store Delirium. After an uptick in local bookings, he made a brief stop in Mannheim for more of the same before moving to Berlin in 2004, where a recently opened Panorama Bar scouted him as resident and offered him the role of in-house booker for its Berghain operations. As word got out and the city started to draw larger crowds he became a fundamental force in crafting the club’s story. Hesitant to define the upstairs-downstairs split as house and techno, he practices his preachings through an approach that embraces a range of different sounds. ‘Surprise is important’ and his 25,000 strong vinyl collection lends a hand in the process, an assemblage that oscillates between disco, house, electro, techno, breakbeat and pop; the key is to capture the spirit of a crowd. This strategy has borne not only his label Freundinnen (put on hiatus in 2007, relaunched in 2023), but a lasting collaboration with sparring partner Sam Barker as half or Barker and Baumecker (four 12” records and two albums on his alma mater’s imprint Ostgut Ton to prove it). nd_baumecker deals in all things funky and uplifting, a thread of life-affirming melodies and historically literate beats that drive seamlessly forward. For this next number comes Amsterdam-based DJ/Producer Grace Dahl, a top-notch talent with a techno heritage. Some of her early years were spent listening to her dad spin records in Spain (the place her rave-loving Hungarian father and Finnish mother then called home), a teasing precursor to subsequent chapters in her tale. A later date saw her move to the Dutch capital: here at 18, she started playing local venues, refining her method and catching the eye of stalwart party series Vault Sessions, where she took up a high-octane residency. In the decade since the pieces have really fallen into place: she’s played Berghain, Awakenings, Boiler Room and a notorious b2b set with her dad at Amsterdam’s Basis. She’s also released her debut EP Dark Side of Desire and a number of follow ups on labels like Amelie Lens’ EXHALE and Frenzy Recordings. Moving forward to the speed of her productions, her very own imprint SDT (Serial Disc Touchers) saw daylight in 2024, a channel for her unfolding prophecy, featuring familiar names like François X and Julian Müller. And it’s a good one. Her sound skims across hard groove and traditional techno, rolling bouts of rhythm and sound that offer a palette you have to feel in the gut. It’s hypnotic, powerful, frenzied stuff, a cavalcade of masterful beats that won’t slow down for a soul. For Bassiani Podcast 256, Dahl brings every one of her razor sharp wits to the table and delivers an hour long blend of staggering scale, pure-blood techno made to measure from her studio base.

The Mix 057: Tigerhead

There’s beauty in chaos and method to madness, that much is true to the work of this faceless duo from Sweden. SHXCXCHCXSH’s strain of anarchic noise has sparked conversations and head-spinning records ever since the two producers first swapped notes in 2009. For about a decade, Hannes Stenström and Emmanuel Pascal Moreno stayed out of the public eye as a matter of principle, stripping music to its very base, without the weight of prejudice and social context holding it back: ’we prefer to listen to music in the dark, preferably without knowing who made it, when or how’. From the chaos and their loyalty to instinct came the need to find new structures, and so their faceless records united around a theme or musical element. It was a gamble, but their sledgehammer destruction of techno conventions gave some of the most intriguing sounds of the 2010s. Sampling everything from podcasts to YouTube to field recordings, they’re always on the hunt for ‘in-between’, ‘unintentional’ details, a way to composite the strangest and most innovative techno out there. Their staggering releases on Avian pioneered new sounds (and track names), and successfully manufactured the type of music you could hear both at home and in clubs; and 2024 saw them resurrect their Rösten imprint with the release of DO, an infernal four-tracker made for the dancefloor. Bassiani Podcast 257 explores that format further, bringing their stabbing and psychedelic havoc to a crowd facing setting. Immersive and heavy-duty, this one’s an hour-long clip of their snake-pit percussions, mind-bending techno from the enigmatic Norrköping duo.
