Bassmelt - Rock The Beat

A Longish electronica track which is a spiritual successor to Just Such Stupendous Personages As Ourselves (CCCXXVII) although not originally intended as-such.  This has a pair of off-chords in it so i don't know how much i'll necessarily push it as a piece.  Everybody by-now knows that I make things more to not-forget-the-idea rather than super polish.  Although when 5% of them accidentally are polished, it's pretty pleasant :)

They set out, the streets oddly quiet as Tyler's head buzzed with questions. Sera walked beside him, arms crossed. "Okay, radio-obsessed Tyler, where are we going?"

Before he could answer, the ground shook. A figure emerged from an alley, cloaked in black. Its glowing eyes scanned Tyler.

“You triggered the rift. You must stop it before it collapses time,” the figure said.

Tyler shot back, “Do you always talk like you’re auditioning for a villain role?”

The figure ignored him and pointed toward an old, abandoned building. “Find it inside. You have little time.”

Sera glanced at Tyler. “Well, this is your thing. Time to save the world… again.”

The figure led them inside, the door slamming behind them. Tyler felt a sense of dread. He wasn’t sure what was about to happen, but something was off. The world, it seemed, was no longer what it used to be.

A couple of days ago, I attended the monthly meeting for the Seattle Electronic Music Producers Association (SEMPA) for the first time.  The guest presenter for the evening was Jon Lee of Tilted Records.  And he showed us some of his work flow in creating a house track, worthy of club play or party play.  

It was my first time, really, interacting with anyone else in public about music production.  It was important, I thought, to get more involved with meat space--and not just live an isolated life connected to other people only through social media.  

My intention with this track was to see what would happen if I used Jon's workflow.  To see if a different process could lead to different results.  

yeeah...that worked for the first hour or so, and then I Interbayed all over the project.  (Naturally.)  

From the rate at which I produce and post music, you might guess that I work pretty fast and loose--and you'd be right.  I don't spend a lot of time agonizing over the specific snare sound that I need to use in a specific situation.  It can lead to wonderful randomness or complete messes that could be improved with a remix or sound substitution.  

From the word go, Jon had a better and more club worthy kick than I feel I've ever managed.  I don't know what his process was for determining what would work best--other than experience.  (I don't think it is better tools--but it certainly could be knowing more about how to use those tools.)  

For whatever reason, I hear "Jeopardized" and I think the kick or maybe the kick/bass combination, sounds too..."round" (that's the best way I can describe it) than what Jon anchored his demonstration track to...and that dissatisfaction with my own choices may have colored what decisions I made after making those choices.  

I guess you could say that I was in danger of jeopardizing my mission simply by working on it.  

...then I remembered.  This is an Interbay track.  There aren't any expectations, much less any rules.  It will be what it will be.  

Which will be Interbay.  

I did manage to keep my hands (mostly) off the vocal sample--letting it be the only one used and not to stutter edit it or to otherwise overload it with tricks, ear candy, and extreme effects.  (And I bet many of you recognize exactly where Icarus sourced it from...)  

This may be the "purest" I've ever managed to creating tech house.  We're not talking Ivory soap "pure"...but relative to the Interbay back catalog, I think I'm right.  

If yesterday's silliness wasn't to your taste, you might give "Jeopardized" a shot and find something more up your alley.  (...and yes, I do need to drop a post-punk or other rock/guitar-centric track soon.)  

Thanks to Jon, Mindy, and a couple of new friends I made that night.  If I haven't annoyed you too much, you should see and hear from me more often.
