2022 sees the mighty Viper Recordings turn 18 and to celebrate this mammoth milestone, label head honcho Futurebound has painstakingly picked one release from each year and created the ‘18 Years of Viper’ compilation. Over the last 18 years, Viper has signed some of the biggest artists in drum and bass including Sigma, Camo & Krooked, and Koven to name a few, and each and every artist included on this tracklist is held in the highest esteem amongst critics, peers, and fans alike. Just one peek at the label’s discography and it’s plain to see how challenging it’s been to pick just one track per year from its rich and varied story.

Starting back in 2005, the album opens with label boss Futurebound and his production partner Matrix with their stone-cold classic ‘American Beauty’. With its haunting sample paired with future-proofed twisting synths and high energy drums, the track can and still does easily tear down any dance today. Moving further through time and further through the album, also featured are ShockOne’s ‘True Believer’, DC Breaks’ ‘Babylon’ and Fred V & Grafix’s ‘Just A Thought’ with Reija Lee before The Prototype’s unbelievable track ‘Pale Bue Dot’ marks the midpoint, a release that dominated the scene at its time with its ever-present forward-moving chug wrapped in sci-fi swaths and hollow-sounding hits and highs.

Picks from more recent years include InsideInfo & Miss Trouble’s iconic ‘Metamorphosis’, Cyantific & Benji’s ‘Colour in The Shadows’ and Jaguar Skillz & Mind Vortex’s ‘Riot Squad 2’. The album finishes in the present day with up and comer Jack Mirror & Champion’s ‘Oculus’, a track which showcases and cements the exceptional standards that are promised when a release is marked with that infamous twisted snake - the energy and excitement of a party banger, effortlessly combined with the integrity and grit of authentic drum and bass, and, of course, masterfully produced.

Here’s to the next 18 years, but for now, enjoy 18 Years of Viper Recordings.

The colossus watched over them, those blessed ones whose ancestors it had saved many centuries ago. Though its eyes had long shut, closed gently in a sleep that would last for eons, those who went about their lives below knew that they were safe beneath its gaze and had therefore built their homes here. Their ancestors had first built upon the ground at the colossus’ feet, a modest settlement of thatch and wood established in symbiosis with their slumbering guardian. The years had passed and the settlement had grown, with all who grew up beneath the giant’s shadow learning to revere the being as a brother, a father, a grandfather, and an ancestor.

Since those early times, the small settlement had become a bustling city, and yet the colossus’ benevolent influence was still felt by all who tread there. The people had learned to construct towering structures that rivaled the being’s height, but none were allowed to be built higher than his slumbering stature. The citizens within tended to the colossus’ appearance, trimming his beard and hair as it was said that he once wore them, before spinning the excess upon great looms that produced fine textiles that were the envy of the land. As dirt, rain, and seeds had settled into the crevasses of the colossus’ armor, forests had sprung up upon the great being, and from these forests the people harvested the fruits of nature, being sure to maintain them such that these growths would not harm their guardian. These and many further gifts did the colossus give to the people, and thus at his feet did they build a great temple, where the living worshipped and the dead were interred, safe within the hollow provided by the giant’s hulking form as it slumbered within life eternal.

Austrian talent MANTA continues his rise after releasing on Neonlight’s Diascope and the German neurofunk powerhouse Hanzom Music and makes his EATBRAIN debut with “Don’t Wake Me Up”, an EP filled with monumental sonics that stands set to begin the construction of this newcomer’s legacy as he rises to his full stature before the EATBRAIN horde.

Bringing high energy right from the start, “Stuck On You” is an instant dancefloor classic with energetic synths, pounding bass, and catchy vocal chops coming together for an unforgettable result. Vibrant and full of life, Georgie Riot cements her place in the drum & bass world with every note. The EP also features a second version of the tune with the “Stuck On Synths” edit, delivering an equally memorable rendition on a softer beat – perfect summer night vibes.  

“In My World” is an ominous, fast-paced drum & bass slammer bringing a foreboding energy into the mix. Neurofunk with a jazzy twist, “In My World” is sure to be a favourite amongst the heads and guaranteed to heat up any dancefloor this summer.  

Last but not least, is “Fly Flap” which verges more on the line of jump-up while still bringing the dark vibes of neurofunk, a true testament to the producer’s versatility and mastery of the genre. While he originally made a name for himself in bassline, Armodine’s love for dirty basslines is evident more than ever on this record, a perfect fit for both drum & bass as a whole and Viper.  

A label known for discovering the biggest names in drum & bass, Futurebound’s ear is second to none, so it is no surprise to see Armodine joining the label’s legendary roster. The “Light Inside” EP is as diverse as it is impressive, and is sure to create a new wave of Armodine fans across the world.
