Following comprehensive retrospective collection ‘Nostalgia: Beats of 2008 – 2020’, BBE Music is delighted to share a fresh batch of material from Canadian production powerhouse Beatchild, in the form of his hotly anticipated new EP, ‘Unselfish Desires’.

Unselfish Desires is another perfectly-formed example of the expectedly unexpected sound that has become Beatchild’s signature style, from jazzy, blunted opener ‘Unselfish Desires’ through to 80’s synth-pop inspired, funk-laced closer ‘In My Head’. Scratchy, head-nodding beats combine with original chord progressions and quirky sonic touches, often glued together with the artist’s own mellow vocal tones. A prodigious multi-instrumentalist, Beatchild pays keen attention to the music production process, skillfully combining heterogeneous sounds and beats that combine to lend his music its unique charm.

As for the tracks, let’s have Beatchild, aka Byram Joseph, take us through them one by one:

“One of my personal challenges when creating music that really makes me feel something special is to compose chord progressions that I feel I’ve never heard before. ‘Unselfish Desires’ wrote itself after the Wurlitzer progression was recorded. Everything just fell into place so quickly and naturally. It’s such an incredible feeling when that happens.

‘Adapting’ is a song about false progress. The music is a never ending loop that feels like progression in how it moves from joy to sadness and back again. It’s the perfect paradox musically and I wanted the lyrics to mirror the feeling I got from the music.

Pulling from real life moments has been something I have always shied away from in my writing. I’ve been trying to be more honest and vulnerable and truthfully, I still find it terrifying. In ‘Dance For Love’, I was thinking of when my wife and I force ourselves to dance with each other through difficult moments and exchange our energy when it’s too tense or sad to talk.

‘In My Head’ was pure fun with no specific intention other than to create a feel good experience. My favourite moments when writing music are when I am free to get completely lost in my own head. Songs like this one usually see me jumping around my studio while I compose the lyrics.”

The third volume of Beatchild’s incredible ‘Soul Movement’ album series will be coming on BBE Music soon, but until then, please enjoy this beautifully crafted EP from one of the most unique and dedicated producers out there.

	Bad Colours is the moniker of London-born, Maryland-raised, Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Ibe Soliman. With influences of garage from both sides of the Atlantic as well as funk, post-disco, proto-house and rap samples; his debut album ‘PINK’ was released by Bastard Jazz in February 2021.
	Known for his residencies at some of New York’s top venues, Ibe has been rocking crowds as a DJ for over a decade, and has shared the decks with the likes of James Murphy, Mark Ronson, and Q-Tip. He’s performed alongside Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Pusha T, and Young Thug, to name a few. In high demand as a private party curator, he’s helped set the tone for Jeff Koons, FKA Twigs, Justin Timberlake, Travis Scott, and Usher. When Ibe’s not behind the decks, he’s in the lab, where he’s produced for Kendrick Lamar, Faith Evans, Keyshia Cole, and Rick Ross, among others.

Mimm Exploration Compilation

After a refurbishment, lick of paint and a re-opening it’s time for Mimm to have a stretch, limber up and round up where they are musically. Their first compilation for over two years shows the journey deeper into the world of electronic soul music, slowed down tempos and doped-out beatsmiths which they have taken.

Mimm have drawn from their talented international collective with fresh dubplates from the likes of in-house producers Congi, Philippe Edison, Metske, Saulya, Warren Xclnce, Mos Isley, Pete Beardsworth, H725, Bruises and Melo Zed. As well as having a few select cuts from internationally acclaimed producers who have graced their events over the past years from Lone (R&S), Om Unit (Cosmic Bridge), Quest (Deep Medi), Flako, Submerse (Project Mooncircle) and Kaelin Ellis (Florida).

It’s an eclectic and brave offering with a general sound that leans heavily on ambient and psychedelic hip hop and house, drenched in warm analogue colours, nostalgic samples and soulful melodies, all the while with a keen awareness of more subtle classical compositions. Throughout there’s a distinct flavour of smoked whiskey-bar jazz riffs grounded in a gritty UK, bass-heavy setting and as musical round-ups go, for Mimm, this is definitely a coming of age compilation.
