Just in time to kick off the Summer, Captain Planet has teamed up with 2 long-time collaborators (Zuzuka Poderosa & Raphael Futura) for a new Brazilian disco funk song, "Moqueca.” The song harkens back to Brazil's legendary funk parties in the 70's and early 80's - where soundsystems bumped legends like Tim Maia, Sandra Da Sa & Gilberto Gil - while infusing some fresh contemporary energy and extra thump for today's dancefloors. Zuzuka's bright vocals bounce over a bubbly bassline, syncopated percussion and wormy vintage synthesizers, while an additional punch is brought in the form of horn arrangements by the prolific maestro Todd Simon, another frequent Captain Planet collaborator. 

“Moqueca” takes inspiration from the Brazilian dish of the same name, a nationally famous fish stew that varies across the regions of Brazil. In her lyrics, Zuzuka talks about the origins and variations of Moqueca, starting with the style from Espirito Santo, her home state, and continuing to Moqueca Baiana, from Bahia, which incorporates African influences and ingredients. The result is a song that is as much an homage to Brazilian music as it is its food, culture and people. 

The song is the first single from Captain Planet's upcoming "Sounds Like Home” EP, which finds the producer turning towards more retro, analogue and live band elements, all with an eye towards his signature “Gumbo Funk” of global sounds. “Moqueca” is out on Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings May 27th.

In the moody psychedelic slow-burn funk of "Mirage," Captain Planet explores some less familiar territory, expanding his sonic repertoire while keeping true to his organic global sound, aka “Gumbo Funk.” Like the other material from his new “Sounds Like Home” EP, the song grew organically out of a jam session, in this case with his youngest brother Taj Bethel, a guitar player, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. Charlie Wilder, the man behind Captain Planet, has always made a point of providing his youngest brother with musical inspiration, regularly sharing lesser-known tracks and albums that were fundamental in his own musical awakening. The classic 70's sounds of Cymande, Gabor Szabo and Baris Manco among others stay in regular rotation in the Captain's studio, where the walls are flanked by ceiling high shelves full of vintage vinyl records. In "Mirage," you can hear the two brothers lovingly nod to some of these influences, while highlighting their own unique musical voices and interpretations as well. In the Captain's words, "the goal was simply to make a record that sounds like what I pull off the shelves and put on my turntable at home, and this feels like it perfectly hits the mark."

Captain Planet is back with another single from his upcoming “Sounds Like Home” EP, this time joined by French Creole artist David Walters: “Kité Soufè” is a unique blend of 70’s disco funk with Afro-Caribbean Creole soul. The title advises listeners to “leave your troubles behind,” while the bass and rhythm beckon you to lace up your roller skates or join the Soul Train line dance. In classic Captain Planet fashion, the song is a true gumbo of musical influences, displaying his creative knack for fueling the dance floor with a genre-bending global style. David Walters’ voice smoothly glides over the syncopated percussion and triumphant horns, while vintage synths weave in and out of the lush production, reminiscent of underground hits from the heyday of Paradise Garage. 

The Captain first came across David Walters’ music during the early days of the lockdown, with his songs immediately finding their way into regular rotation on his livestreamed DJ sets. The two artists connected online, leading to a Captain Planet remix of Walters’ latest single, “No One.” Then, earlier this Summer, they were finally able to meet in-person during the Captain’s European tour, becoming instant friends; the two artists even performed the remix live the night they met! A collaboration was quickly in the works, with Walters recording the vocals for what would become “Kité Soufè'' in a single sitting. Back in LA, the additions of Tod Simon’s horns and guitar lines from Pat Bailey (Jungle Fire) completed the track. 

“Kité Soufè” is out on Bastard Jazz Recordings August 19th, with the full EP due in the Fall.

Captain Planet & David Walters - Kité Soufè

In his latest musical offering, Captain Planet collaborates with Colombian singer Jimena Angel to create a scorching slice of classic Afro Latin funk. The song began during a recent tour in South America where Captain Planet was playing some gigs around Santa Marta & Cartagena. A fan of Jimena's previous work, he reached out and connected online, arranging several days of collaboration. "I was staying in a tiny thatched roof hut in the jungle by the side of the Guachaca river, making beats on my laptop with headphones in preparation before meeting up. This beat was one of the first ones I played Jimena and immediately she got the vibe and we started to jam. The song had a triumphant and empowering feel, and then somehow we locked into chanting the name "Pambelé", who is an iconic Afro-latin boxer, born in Palenque, who holds a stature similar to Muhammad Ali for many Colombians." The uplifting Spanish lyrics speak about always moving forward, never looking backward, while fighting adversity. Jimena's powerful vocals soar over a super heavy bass line, accompanied by wah wah guitars and a hammond organ riff, with syncopated punches of horns, congas and cowbells. While the sound is reminiscent of timeless gems from artists like Ray Barretto or WAR, there is also a very contemporary feel and updated thump for today's discerning listeners.

Welcome to the 2nd Volume of the Jazz Room series compiled by DJ legend and label owner Paul Murphy.

Following on from the success of the original Jazz Room compilation released by BBE in 2019 Paul has compiled a double vinyl volume of Jazz dance tracks that range from heavy funk of New Orleans to Latin grooves and contemporary jazz from the new generation.
Tracks written by Dizzy Gillespie sit with those from the musical pens of Raul Monsalve and Fela Kuti.

Paul's own label, Jazz Room Records, specialises in re-issues and it is his expertise in finding the rare and the obscure and matching with the new and the fresh that creates the joy filled atmosphere on this compilation.

This album really is as much for the party people as it it for the headz and links the audiences from his legendary gigs in the 1970s and 80s at the Electric Ballroom, 100 Club and The Blue Note to those at his current appearances at Spiritland, Shiftless Shuffle and
Brilliant Corners.

Indeed, among the rarities and the global rhythms in this collection are some excellent cover versions of tracks from the aforementioned Fela Kuti, The Stranglers, Azymuth and The Human League (yes, The Human League). What Paul Murphy has done here is compile a selection of tracks that could easily be a DJ club set, a soundtrack to a party, a Summer festival highlight or a night of music appreciation with a favourite tipple and partner.

The Jazz Room Volume 2 is a must have compilation and, along with Volume 1, is a masterpiece of music curation.

For the final single leading up to his full length "Sounds Like Home" album, Captain Planet teamed up with the rising Brazilian indie soul maestro Tagua Tagua, creating a highly infectious song that mixes laid back funk with psychedelic Brazilian soul. "Destello" is a spanish word that translates as a flash or sparkle, a bright light that is gone too soon, and the dreamy poetic lyrics on this love song, sung in Portugese, suggest that the bright light of love is difficult to capture and hold on to in much the same way. After hearing Tagua's music and becoming a fan, Captain Planet reached out in an email and the two started sharing sounds and ideas. The Captain described that "despite being a remote collaboration, the workflow was very natural and easy. We both somehow found a shared vision that blends our two styles, and there was no push or pull, just adding our ideas and digging what the other person was bringing to the table." Fans of Brazilian funk like Marcos Valle & Tim Maia will find a lot to love here, as will folks who tend to lean more toward the psychedelic sounds of Caetano Veloso and other artists of the legendary Tropicalia movement. Even if you've never listened to Brazilian music before, we think you'll agree that "Destello" is the sonic embodiment of rolling real slow in a roofless car next to your new crush while the sun sets behind palm trees swaying in a warm breeze.
