Denver producer and visual artist John T. Hastings aka RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz for his second album on the label, “Arcadian Daze”. The album is a contemplative drive down a nostalgic highway, reflecting on a period of his late adolescence growing up in Ohio, spending time at Arcadia Beach on Lake Erie and discovering the likes DJ Shadow, Madlib, Fila Brazilla, early Four Tet, the original Ninja Tune roster and more. Revisiting these coming of age memories, John purchased an older MPC 2000XL and set out to musically capture the excitement of putting his first nascent loops together, inspired by this pivotal era of electronic music that has since birthed movements like such as Lo-Fi/Chillhop, Vaporwave, LA’s mid-2000s Beat Scene / Low End Theory, etc. 

The end result of “Arcadian Daze” is indeed filled with that nostalgic spirit paying homage to those aforementioned sounds, but also presents a forward thinking musical palate that’s very much grounded in RUMTUM’s sensibilities as a producer and time spent learning to program new & vintage outboard gear. The album moves away from the warm, dreamy sounds of last year’s “Isles in Indigo” LP, and touches more into a mystical, pensive vibe with elements of darkness and light.

Denver, CO-based producer and visual artist RUMTUM (aka John Hastings) returns to Bastard Jazz with a new single, the first from his upcoming album campaign. “Pier Light” is a true progression in RUMTUM’s sound, one the producer has built with a steady stream of singles and 2022’s “Isles in Indigo” LP. While still instrumental and atmospheric, “Pier Light” adds driving percussion and deeper bass sounds to the mix, to create a heavier, more dance-inspired track. “Pier Light” is out October 28th.

"Echo Drift" shifts RT's production from the dreamy, subaquatic haze of his previous LP into a bit more hard hitting territory, with a sparse drum break, swirling percussion, ghostly vocal samples and lush pads on resting on top. The track is a continuity of progress from this rapidly developing producer to watch.

Utilizing a breakbeat reminiscent of 2-Step Garage or slowed down drum'n'bass, layered on top of childlike melodies, a deep bassline, and sparkling synth work. Portland based musician and artist POSY returns to Bastard Jazz for his second EP on the label, "I Know A Place". Moving to the left of some of the Lo-Fi influences of his first record, the new EP brings in more sophisticated instrumental work and jazz influences, working with a slew of guest musicians to set the mood more dusty than digital. Things kick off with "Aoi Yume", a beatless mood piece with lush keys and saxophone, while "Better Days" featuring Natalie Slade is a lifting piece of 70s inspired smooth R&B. "I Know A Place" featuring Brandon Lee Cierley layers horns and harps into an easy listening atmospheric piece with a modern edge while "Seshi" sounds like a 5 piece band playing in a mid-century modern space station. Lastly, "Message To Jun" ends the EP on an uptempo note with flute, live bass and keys, and a drumbreak that's beginning to be sampled for a hip-hop record. A big step forward for this bright young producer.

Rising Dutch producer Afroham releases ‘Online’, his final single before the release of debut EP ‘Quantum Love’. The 26-year-old musician from Rotterdam is fusing neo-soul, lofi and hip-hop in his very own style and fashion. ‘Online’ features Swiss singer Djemeia, best known for her work with Melodiesinfonie and Slum Village. 

On ‘Quantum Love’, Afroham (and a close group of musical friends) addresses love and rejection in the digital age, topics Millennials and Gen Z are oh so familiar with. Appropriately, Afroham and singer Ginge (who appears on two tracks) first met on Tinder and started dating. But instead of becoming a couple they ended up writing songs together. Further guests on ‘Quantum Love’ include producers/musicians Cocabona, Ian Ewing, Birocratic and Misha (all household names on the international beat & lofi scene). 

Born Nathan Avraham, Afroham's artist name is a playful take on his surname and his hairdo. His superpowers also include creating visual art via video and 3d animation (despite being colourblind). Afroham has directed and animated a full-length movie that accompanies the release of the EP and its three singles. The artwork for all four releases comes from Parisian artist MC Blue Matter who in turn was inspired by the “Quantum Love” film when he worked on the covers. 

Afroham has released a sling of successful singles on labels like Steezyasfuck and Chillhop (where he also works during daytime). His current playlist has music from artists like H.E.R., SiR, J. Dilla, Men I Trust & Mndsgn.
