Denver, CO-based producer and visual artist RUMTUM (aka John Hastings) returns to Bastard Jazz with a new single, the first from his upcoming album campaign. “Pier Light” is a true progression in RUMTUM’s sound, one the producer has built with a steady stream of singles and 2022’s “Isles in Indigo” LP. While still instrumental and atmospheric, “Pier Light” adds driving percussion and deeper bass sounds to the mix, to create a heavier, more dance-inspired track. “Pier Light” is out October 28th.

RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz with the second single from his upcoming LP "Arcadian Daze", due out in Spring of '23. "Echo Drift" shifts RT's production from the dreamy, subaquatic haze of his previous LP into a bit more hard hitting territory, with a sparse drum break, swirling percussion, ghostly vocal samples and lush pads on resting on top. The track is a continuity of progress from this rapidly developing producer to watch.

"Sand Spirit" is the fourth and final single from RUMTUM's upcoming album, 'Arcadian Daze'. Utilizing a muted, understated 2-step UK Garage break that evokes Burial's early work, along with a deep, pulsing bassline throughout. The song atmospherically layers warm, enveloping synth work with an otherworldly Koto-esque string line to create a melancholy, evocative soundscape.'Arcadian Daze' will be out everywhere March 24th.

Denver producer and visual artist John T. Hastings aka RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz for his second album on the label, “Arcadian Daze”. The album is a contemplative drive down a nostalgic highway, reflecting on a period of his late adolescence growing up in Ohio, spending time at Arcadia Beach on Lake Erie and discovering the likes DJ Shadow, Madlib, Fila Brazilla, early Four Tet, the original Ninja Tune roster and more. Revisiting these coming of age memories, John purchased an older MPC 2000XL and set out to musically capture the excitement of putting his first nascent loops together, inspired by this pivotal era of electronic music that has since birthed movements like such as Lo-Fi/Chillhop, Vaporwave, LA’s mid-2000s Beat Scene / Low End Theory, etc. 

The end result of “Arcadian Daze” is indeed filled with that nostalgic spirit paying homage to those aforementioned sounds, but also presents a forward thinking musical palate that’s very much grounded in RUMTUM’s sensibilities as a producer and time spent learning to program new & vintage outboard gear. The album moves away from the warm, dreamy sounds of last year’s “Isles in Indigo” LP, and touches more into a mystical, pensive vibe with elements of darkness and light.

After a long hiatus, Canadian producer & singer/songwriter Dead Horse Beats aka Patrick Wade returns to Bastard Jazz with his new EP ‘Moon Mist’. Heavily inspired by various religious music groups from the 60s and 70s, the EP features DHB’s infectious hooks coupled with upfront, driving production and layered instrumentation. “I was listening to a lot of gospel music by people like TL Barrett, the Swan Silvertones, DR Hooker,New Creation, Tim Maia’s Cultura Racional religious sect era stuff; and also this Australian self-produced Scientology record by a guy named Richard Yared” says Patrick.

Singing in his signature laidback & spaced out vocal style, the EP is lyrically all about a woman quitting being a priest and starting her own religion in a retirement community. “I was kind of imagining her band all living in Del Boca Vista together making this record doing small amounts of psychedelic drugs and lawn bowling together.”  As odd as that may sound, it sort of comes together and makes sense when digging into the EP - besides just overall just being a straight up bop.
