When a band is selected “Top 10 live acts of the year” by New York’s TIME OUT MAGAZINE it really has to be something special. That’s the case for Hess Is More. A transatlantic music ensemble. 7 international musicians around Danish composer and drummer Mikkel Hess.

Hess is a composer of music for film, theatre and ballet. Latest he was nominated for the prestigious Robert Award and Carl Award with his score for the feature film “When Animals Dream“.
Bearsong and Youarenotaprimate were arranged during the group’s residency at Clocktower Gallery in downtown New York. Recorded Live to Tape and mixed by Andrew Raposo (Midnight Magic /Hercules & Love Affair / DFA) at Midnight Sun Studios in Greenpoint.

These seven musicians, with their unique instrumentation and unorthodox arrangements create a very danceable yet at times puzzling sound. Melodies with unusual developments, basslines that have their roots in late 1970 jazz funk. Youarenotaprimate is an orgy of No Wave drums, Afrobeat-bassline and distorted rhode pianos. The lyrics can haunt you for days: „You are not a primate, you are not Maharishi either, but in between there is someone called yourself“. Hess Is More have a hugh fanbase already in New York’s undergound music scene. People like James Murphy of DFA, Pitchfork’s favourite avantgarde pop musician Lorna Dune and Lowbrow Reader editor Jay Ruttenberg are big fans of their live shows. Pips from Petty Nobles Collective just wrote this nice quote: “I believe I just witnessed the future of live dance music“.

A vinyl with remixes by Dimitri From Paris, Pollyester and Williamsbourg’s hidden star Lorna Dune will come out in september.

We first heard Life on Planets perform live at WMC in 2015 at the Freehand Hotel in Miami. When we heard "Cold Front" we new we wanted to work with it as it has a bubbly bass synth that kicks in with a sinister bass line and all other kinds of cool elements. The "S" in FSQ stands for "style" and we like to apply various musical styles to our remix work. We reached out to Life on Planets and got the session and went to work.

Billy Bass Nelson is one of the founders of Funkadelic (he even coined the term) which got started way back in 1969. 

FSQ had the opportunity to get a session in with Billy Bass in May 2015, and we brought him to Williamsburg to Dave Robertson's (Cameo Culture)'s studio. We pulled up the Life on Planets session since it needed work, and Billy just it took over. The vibes were thick in the little basement room as he laid down bass and multiple tracks of guitars.  

What most people do not realize about Billy Bass Nelson is that he had a productive career after leaving Funkadelic full time in 1972 and is on so many disco funk hits that are played heavily today. 

His work beyond Funkadelic includes productions for The Commodores, The Temptations, Rose Banks (Sly Stone's sister), Jermaine Jackson, Lenny Williams, Alton McLain & Destiny and Smokey Robinson. 

Many of Billy's LA disco sessions were also joined by Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel and Sly Stone himself, not credited, but instead Sly went under the name Jimmy Ford (a joke, the president who took over from Nixon). 

The FSQ Billy Bass Funkadelic dub version of Life on Planets "Cold Front" marks the first time Billy's been heard on a record since his 1995 solo record. We made a YouTube playlist of Billy's post Funkadelic disco-funk works here, and we think you'll be able to link his distinct sound on these cuts, to what you will hear in the new FSQ dub we did for Life on Planets.

During the Billy Bass session on "Cold Front", Billy remarked that LOP vocalist Phil Jenkins sounds a bit like Tyrone Davis. 

Tyrone Davis is a famous northern soul singer, known for his hit "Turn Back the Hands of Time". Ironically, we heard the very same thing with Phil, so we created an alternate remix of "Cold Front" with deep northern soul stylings including lush guitars, organs, melodica, and a driving northern soul beat. FSQ's GKoop played a big part in revising the song for this style which we often produce in (we did a northern soul remix for Nick Monaco in 2014). Violinist Lauren Avery guests here, recording over 25 tracks of strings to give the remix a fully orchestrated sound that you hear on many northern soul records.

Next up in our premiere series we're featuring the latest installation from Subjekt, the Amsterdam based underground sister label of Armada Music. It comes in the form of "Purple EP" by French producer N'to, a soulful three-tracker of which we are unveiling the title track.

N'to was born in Marseille in 1985. His love story with music started in his early childhood with his parents' icons. He started learning to play the guitar when he was ten years old and has never given up making music since then.

Influenced by minimal and techno artists such as James Holden, Extrawelt and Stephan Bodzin, his electronic working is recognisable by his use of smooth melodies surrounded by efficient minimalistic rhythms.

70s rock, 30s swing, hiphop, triphop, pop, jazz, soul, classical music are as many shades N’to can use to colour his tracks. He has been able to create a distinctive, "pointillist" sound that already makes him a key player on the French techno market.

Creating the Hungry Music imprint alongside with his friends Worakls and Joachim Pastor is a chance for him to let his imagination and musical eclecticism flow freely so that he continuously reinvents himself. That’s how his latest project, N’to Live Perc, illustrates his knack for blurring the borders between electronic and acoustic.

Full Premiere: N'to - Purple (Original Mix)

Not much is known of Zap Francis, and the little that we do know only seems to shroud Zap further in mystery. Fragments from the self-titled Zap Francis EP first dropped onto our laps in Black Milk's Boiler Room set last summer. On being asked where Mr. Milk discovered the tracks dropped in his set, he laid it down as simply as "Zap Francis gave them to me." So who is this Zap guy, and why's it taken over a year for his big (D/)debut to surface?

Though we wish we had the answers, what we can confirm is that it was well worth the wait. Zap Francis - forthcoming on Bleep's own label - embodies multiple dimensions of modern-age instrumental hip hop. The EP's beatsy opening track, "Scuffer", sets the mood instantly, with clickety-click shuffles of the hi-hat and a persistent, undulating synth line overhead. Zap marks his breakthrough on a strong footing that - we pray - will keep the momentum going for many more releases to come.

Zap Francis drops (digi + vinyl) on October 2nd.
