The first song from George Hurd's "Echolocation," a subscription-based project focused on creating music made with location-specific audio recordings. This opening track is about Oslo, Norway, and uses sounds recorded entirely within Oslo to conjure the essence of the city both emotionally and physically. Rather than just being inspired by the city's spirit, it is built from raw audio material collected from Oslo's sonic landscape. The end result is a musical representation of it that is both artistic and literal, bringing the place itself into the music.

Every 4-6 weeks will be a new piece based on a new location from my travels in Europe. Next we'll be hitting Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Belgium, the Netherlands and more to create a kaleidoscope of music based on places in each country.

The 3rd piece for George Hurd's "Echolocation" project, this iteration was created specifically for Codame, an art + tech organization based in San Francisco. Created an interactive piece for their 3D Web Fest with visual artist/coder/tech wiz Juan Miguel de Joya. The full piece was premiered and performed on June 30, 2017 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco (watch performance at https://youtu.be/u-Qxs5FePBs), and included projections that visualized the music within digitally illustrated imagery of San Francisco that reacted to Hurd's playing. 

The piece itself consists of iconic field recordings collected around the city, including but not limited to: numerous foghorns, the BART train, the F Line bells, the Cable Car Museum, the seals at Pier 39, Chinatown street noise, the Wave Organ, the sounds of the harbor at Marina Green, MUNI bus sounds, waves in the Bay, and so much wind, wind, wind.

CHURCHILL'S WAR for Orchestra is the next in my series of works in the realm of music and speech, exploring the inward affect of their shared physical traits (pitch, rhythm, and amplitude). The piece highlights Churchill's stirring vocal performance. Occasionally, orchestral sonorities are combined with processed recordings of Churchill's speech, weaving together sonic textures and illuminations, viscerally re- contextualizing Churchill's oration while revealing connections between melody and text.

Kangyi has performed on various stages in Singapore, Malaysia and the United States. As a composer, his music are often programmatic and based on personal life and experiences. He also aims to raise public awareness on important historical events.
