The gang have just finished watching the propaganda film about The Battle of the Somme, but it has not had the desired affect on them. They are all very upset by the images and feel useless and unable to contribute. There is a fear running through them of what will happen if the fight comes to their shores...

In this scene we are introduced to Gripper and his gang of bullies who are putting together a fake court martial for Little Jimmy Biggs. They are accusing him of stealing a bike, but this is merely an excuse for organised bullying.
