During lockdown a decision was made to change the name of the project.

EVFB MIX: DONTGETUP #8

It is curious to try to understand the purpose of the whole idea behind our series of podcasts. Would it just be showing you new dj’s? New songs? Or does its goal go further? Music has the power to narrate, relate, describe, teach, expose and denounce the history of our humanity. And that is one of the many functions of a good DJ. Tell a story through your hands and discs.

And that is what our new guest does - and very well. The ninth curator of TropiCaldo Sonoro is Astronafrica ( @astronafrica ). Raphael Brasil was born in Porto Alegre and migrated to Sydney, Australia 17 years ago. He is a DJ, cultural agitator, occasional journalist, founder and curator of Mixagi Collective and resident DJ at Afrobrasiliana Soundsystem. 

“In this mix, my intention was to showcase some afrocentric and diasporic electronic sounds. The selection was very broad and my criteria was to dig into the possible connections between percussive, drum machine and synth sounds that would bring about an eclectic yet specific sound aesthetic.  

It's often hard to tell a story in an hour long mix, but it was a nice challenge to focus on tracks that really spoke to me in ways that could be defined as a mixed bag of feelings, creative input and rawness. Fimber Bravo's poem "You can't control we" sets the tone to a moody eighties vibe. New findings as well as all time mantras oscillate between turbulent and trance like vibes, ending with a nice truth from Glauber Rocha to Mr. Marinho.”

E é isso o que nosso novo convidado faz - e muito bem. Um amante da antropofagia, o nono curador da TropiCaldo Sonoro é Astronafrica ( @astronafrica ). Transita e transmuta pelo orgânico e o eletrônico de forma bem peculiar. Há 17 anos morando em Sydney- Austrália, Astronafrica entre outras coisas alastra a música Brasileira e as influências afro psico-tropicais que formam sua identidade. Atuante da cena independente em Sydney, Astronafrica faz um bem bolado através da festa Mixagi cujo e fundador, mas também é DJ residente da festa Afrobrasiliana. Foi apresentador do programa semanal Vibez Brazil por onze anos (2007 - 2018) na Eastside Radio 89.7FM (Sydney).

“Nesse mix, minha intenção foi apresentar um pouco de alguns sons eletrônicos afrocêntricos e diaspóricos. A seleção foi muito ampla e meu critério foi pesquisar as possíveis conexões entre sons percussivos, de bateria eletrônica e sintetizadores que criaram uma estética sonora eclética.

Muitas vezes é difícil contar uma história em um mix de uma hora, mas foi um bom desafio focar nas faixas que realmente falassem comigo de uma forma que poderia ser definida como uma mistura de sentimentos, input criativos e emoções. O poema de Fimber Bravo ‘Você não pode controlar nós’ dá o tom para uma vibe dos anos 80. Novas descobertas, assim como mantras atemporais oscilando entre vibes turbulentas e tracks de trance, concluindo com uma bela verdade de Glauber Rocha para o Senhor Marinho.”

Sounds Like Jorge - Segundo
SLJ-2 is a 100 % vinyl mix of amazing Jorge Ben versions by Batukizer created in April 2020 during lockdown while digging deep into our Brazilian music archives.

We continue our work from SLJ-1 presenting a unique selection of world class cover versions of Jorge Ben songs mixed with a couple of super rare non-album Jorge Ben tracks.

Opening the mixtape is a gospel/spiritual inspired Brazilian choir version of the 1963 classic Chove Chuva (raining rain) melting into Bebeto's tribute to Jorge Ben using the same melody as an intro and stealing lines and titles from JBJ epic songs throughout this amazing homage.

The mix centers around the 1970s versions from Myriam Makeba, Wilson Simonal and lesser known cover versions on obscure 7 inches. Finishing off is the Jorge Ben original song about the mythical Saci Perere figure from Brazilian folklore.

Brazil 2014.
The african heritage in Brazil is ever present. And perhaps in the music more than anywhere else. The beats of samba, bossa, maracatu, coco and the many other regional rhytms have influences stretching back to western africa.

Brazil is by far the single country in the world that received the most african slaves - estimated more than 3 million - and also the last country to ban slavery in the 1880’s. As a comparison the US in total received only 600.000.

The Brazilian afro-catholic religions candomblé and umbanda are directly linked to the Yoruba, Fon and Ewe culture of western africa. In brazil the african deities became mixed with catholic saints and practices in order to preserve the ancient ways and heritage. Like other religions, it's about spirituality, energy and storytelling. Here music is knowledge. Vinyl is culture. Disco é Cultura.

This first released mix EVFB is called Afro Brazil Orixa Mix - Primeiro (ABOM-1). The songs in the mix has been played out loud on festivals in Denmark and Finland in the summer of 2014 - and has seen very strong reactions on the dance floor.

It is a percussion driven journey into Brazilian afro rhytms, strong voices and spirituality. From pop music to capoeira rituals.

It shows how deeply the orixás has been rooted in Brazilian music, rhytms and language - in music like samba, funk, bossa and even Brazilian popular music (MPB). A lot of artists and bands has taken great pride in writing songs to or about the orixás - especially from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is only one of the fascinating discoveries you can make digging deeper into Brazilian music and language.

Copenhagen 2014.
The mix starts with Amazon Jungle recordings by the Danish descendant Johan Dalgas Frisch. The album does not say when it is published but my guess from what I can find is around 1970 - probably exactly that year. He devoted his private life in Brazil to the preservation of the forest and did some rare and unique recordings of the indians, birds and forest sounds.

The mix ends with a Danish version of Dorival Caymmi's fisherman chant Promessa do Pescador. It is by legendary Danish jazz/latin guitarist Christian Sievert, who was also a great bird lover.

This recording - only a few years after Sergio Mendes version - underline the importance of the afrobrazilian heritage and the uniqueness in Brazil's cultural mix. It was recorded in Nørrebro, Copenhagen - in 1976 - a few 100 yards from my house.
Even back then the impact from this music spread all over the world and influenced many people. Without the internet.
It is obvious on the track that it is not Brazilians singing because of the pronounciation of "Iemanjá" - but still it's very powerful music!

This song is only a little over one minute long. The liner notes states that they over recorded 1 hour straight, but for some reason they cut it down to two 1 minut versions in the studio. I'm trying to see if the master tapes are still around.

We are flying back on pure, black, crackling vinyl to a time when people made music for the sake of art and love. Music for thinking, beautiful and strong people looking to change the future.

This is a journey into sound. And a journey to the soul of Brazil. To the great sounds of the past and to the four corners of the huge country. To the deep and strong musical heritage that comes from roots and rhythms, poetry, jazz and rocknroll. You will hear music with voices replacing words with feelings. Sounds Like Jorge - Primeiro.
SLJ-1 is a 100 % vinyl mix by Batukizer created in January 2016 before flying to Rio to DJ at two Jorge Ben shows at legendary venue Circo Voador.

The first part of the mix features alternations between JBJ tracks and versions by other artists. The first track is from 1960 and recorded by Polish Jazz musician Wroblewski's Quintet that worked as backing with José Prates (Tam Tam Tam) show during one of their European tours. The afro brazilian show concept was later refined and heavily commercialized as the Oba Oba shows.

In first 30 minutes it's a mix of 1960's and 1970's and the mix then moves into mixing 1970's with 1980's grooves which Captain Jorge and his crew master like no other band. There a great deal of Brazilian boogie and disco out there, but some of JBJ's instrumental parts are so incredibly funky they deserved to be looped on and on. That's why we need two copies of each record ❤️✌️

The careful selection process of this mixtape began more than 6 months ago when we were invited to DJ the “secret” Lost in Sandoz psych party in Copenhagen. The name of the mix however came later and pays respect to the Brazilian book LSD (Lindo Sonho Delirante - Beautiful Delirious Dream) published in November 2016 by Bento Araújo. This novelty book showcases 100 important Brazilian psych records from 1968-1975.

Three and a half raw hours of me playing an eclectic selection of jams dug deep from my personal record collection, and recorded live at our local listening room and speakeasy, Kasheme in Zurich.

Full of crackles, pops, skips and a little bit of suspect mixing, this was recorded purely on the fly and is a snapshot of my mismatched catalogue of favourite tunes collected over the years and played in no particular order.

Covering pretty much every genre that isn't house and techno, I was on a roll! 

Includes music from Kokoroko, Arthur Russell, First Word Records, Wally Badarou, Adventures In Paradise, The Rolling Stones, BEGIN, Fatima, Eclectic Avenue Records, Nas, Saint Etienne, Roy Ayers, The Rebirth and Children Of Zeus, to name but a few.

We're back for another series of Savlar Selects. We continue with some zouky vibes from across the French speaking Caribbean, a track from my favourite north African duo Amadou & Mariam, an edit of 'Yala' from the fantastic Malian singer Oumou Sangaré and some sounds from South Africa including 'Peacock' from Splash. 

Splash were a South African Soweto township band from the 80s led by Dan Tshanda, lead vocalist and bass guitar. He was also the mastermind behind "Dalom Kids" - 3 vocalists whom he brought together, you'll find their track 'Cellular' also featured in this mix. Dan passed away last year! Here's to you Dan! RIP and thanks for the music.

Brazil’s musical heritage is a fountain of endless discovery.
After years of heavy digging, BTKZR brings you new sounds from the past in the shape of DJ sets with outstanding Brazilian songs that you most likely have not heard before.

All the BTKZR tracks are extracted from our collection of Brazilian vinyl records. These were found digging on our numerous travels since the year 2000.

Our DJ sets will bring you soundscape music, afro brazilian, tropicália madness, the emotional depths of samba/bossa plus incredible beats and basslines, haunting vocals and spiritual songs from the South to the North of this great country.

In 2020 we played a few gigs abroad (Norway, Belgium) and toured in Brazil before Corona. The summer was spent touring and DJing extensively in Denmark with more than 20 gigs over the span of the summer.

In 2018 and 2019 BTKZR has Toured in India and Brazil, played Gilles Petersons Worldwide Festival, Mellotron in Paris, NTS Radio, bookings at Spiritland in London, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and much much more.

In 2017 Batukizer has played a score of major Danish Festivals: Roskilde, Stella Polaris, Metropol, Volume Festival. In addition events and major club nights with deep and magnificent music. A German tour, Yuka Club in Tunis, Alma Hotel in Barcelona.

In 2016 Batukizer has played at: Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Roskilde Festival, supporting legendary Azymuth in Copenhagen, warming up for Jorge Ben at Circo Voador in Rio, The Lake Radio, Jolenes in Copenhagen, SommerChill Festival.

In 2015 Batukizer has played in Paris, Neu Club São Paulo, Cph Winterjazz Festival (with Azymuth), The Lake Radio, Roskilde Festival, Søndagsvenner Festival, Distortion Festival, Ya'Ya' Hifi in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2014 Batukizer has played at: We Love Helsinki, Trailerpark Festival, Chill i Parken Festival and Sunday Friends.
