"Before Jon became the world-famous and respected composer he is today I had the privilege of doing some sessions with him. This is something that we started 8 or 9 years ago and the original idea was less than 90 seconds long. I always loved the feeling it gave me so I decided to develop it for this album as I felt it fitted into what I was trying to say. The words came last. This extract was shown to me by my friend (and one of Belfast’s finest actors), Lalor Roddy because he thought it had a lot in common with a short film I directed called ‘I AM HERE‘, which deals with family and reconnection in the afterworld. It comes from a book called AENEID VI, which was the last work Seamus Heaney translated before he passed; which made it even more special as I consider this to be a very Northern Irish-themed album. When I first read it I was stunned by the similarities and wrote a letter to Mick Heaney (Seamus Heaney’s son) asking for permission. The Heaney family gave me permission (which I am forever grateful for) and the next step was securing the voice of another Northern Irish great, Stephen Rea. A huge thank you to Stephen and the Heaney family for helping me make this happen. It was a perfect way to finish this album." - David Holmes

La baudroie abyssale de Johnson (Melanocetus johnsonii) est un poisson d’eau profonde de la famille des Melanocetidae, trouvé dans tous les océans des régions tempérées à tropicales à des profondeurs allant jusqu'à 2 000 mètres. Le mâle a une longueur maximale de 3 centimètres alors que les femelles peuvent atteindre jusqu'à 20 centimètres.
La femelle a une énorme tête avec une immense bouche remplie de longues dents fines qui peuvent se replier vers l'arrière quand la proie est avalée. Le ventre est distensible et grâce à l'énorme ouverture de la bouche, elle peut avaler des poissons jusqu'à deux fois sa longueur. Ses yeux sont petits et couverts d'une mince couche de peau, et devant eux se trouve un grand leurre qui est en fait une modification de la première épine de la nageoire dorsale.
Les mâles sont libres de nager comme ils veulent lorsqu'ils sont jeunes, mais avant l'âge adulte ces petits poissons (environ un dixième de la taille de la femelle) se fixent eux-mêmes en permanence à l'arrière du corps de la femelle dont ils deviennent un parasite. Leur sang leur est fourni par la femelle et la plupart des organes internes dégénèrent : ils deviennent tout simplement des organes fournisseurs de sperme.
