BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Month Sep 2017

Since Radio 1 began 50 years ago, we’ve had some amazing sessions from the world’s biggest stars – including Adele, David Bowie and Florence and the Machine. Every September we open our doors for a huge month of massive names. 2017 saw Foo Fighters, Pink, Harry Styles, Stormzy, Rita Ora, Jay-Z and loads more.

The BBC Pop Hub Station Sound team produced all the imaging, Top of Hours and promos which ran supporting the Live Lounge’s biggest month. To promote this colossal line-up, promos thew ahead to acts coming-up across the week and we used top of hours and tagged tracks to pre-promote the next Live Lounge session on the air.

BBC R1 Live Lounge Month Sep 2017

This campaign won Best Promo Campaign at the ARIAs 2017

The 6 Music Festival brings together the UK’s radio station for music lovers with the alternative music community of a city. In only its fourth year, and the first time in Glasgow, our creative challenge was to tell the story of the festival, make an instant connection with the city as well as promote an unprecedented amount of content over 3 days, across 5 venues with 100 artists. 

6 Music’s success is down to its authenticity. Our promotions feel part of the fabric of the network. So to create a sense of belonging to Glasgow, we recorded distinctive sounds around the city and wove them into every piece of the campaign. The docks, the tram, rain on Bridge Street, the river. We transported the listener directly to the city and made a deeper connection with those who recognised these sounds.

We found the perfect female voice from Glasgow, who gave us a strong, powerful read, while remaining warm and accessible. Just like the city. 

We reframed the lyrics from all the festival artists performing over our soundscapes of the city. This allowed us to beautifully re-contextualise their music, directly connecting it with Glasgow. After playing the song, presenters would reiterate when that artist was appearing. This was a perfect way to raise awareness and bring an incredibly diverse range of artists under one creative identity. 

It was important that the campaign reflected the city’s community spirit and didn’t feel like we were imposing. Starting the imaging and promotional trails with “In My City” gave Glasgow and Scotland ownership of the festival, capitalising on their proud passion for music. It also allowed us to explain what you might find there, from the loudest roar to Depeche Mode. This was pivotal when promoting our Glasgow music documentaries and programmes curated by festival artists and was enhanced by including Scottish cultural icons such as Belle & Sebastian, the Poet Laurette and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

To promote our digital and TV offering, we used festival audience testimonies and engaging insights from the artists to make our promotion feel like editorial. The promotion had a huge impact and really connected with our audience. The event sold out within 24 hours.

Using the opening lyrics of the song acted out by our festival voice, we created individual spoken word pieces for each artist performing. Setting this over a real soundscape of Glasgow not only places the song and artist into the city but also connects the alternative spirit of the song to the city.

4. 6 Music Festival 2017 Line Up Trail. This broke out into more targeted Friday, Saturday and Sunday trails featuring the artists appearing on those corresponding days. In previous weeks there had been supporting trails for documentaries and programmes curated by festival artists.

These were played off the back of live music from the festival to experience our visual content on BBC Red Button TV.

5. Depeche Mode Red Button Catch Up Trail
Again off the back of live music to push to our red button activity. Using a mixture of audience testimonies and the artist themselves to enhance excitement and authenticity in the trail.

BBC Radio 6 Music Festival 2017 - promos and imaging

Our “This is” campaign runs on the BBC’s Popular Music networks over Christmas and New Year. It’s a brand building campaign that consolidates the past 12 months in the context of building excitement of what’s to come. We use it as a kind of New Year reset.

We want each campaign to sound unique in reflecting the diversity of our content so a different creative is used for each network.

This Is BBC Radio 2018

In September 2017, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 celebrated 50 years since they launched. Central to the celebrations was BBC Radio 1 Vintage, a 3-day station celebrating the presenters and programmes of the last 50 years.

To image and promote the station we blended the music and imaging of the last 5 decades with long-time Radio 1 voice over, John Wells. JAM Creative Productions made many of the original sung jingles for BBC Radio 1, and so we asked them to help us create the sound of Radio 1 Vintage.

The new package includes an update to Radio 1's chart show logo, a fresh set of beds, 80 new numbers (1 to 40, twice over - Ben loved making those) and the return of the rundown!
