I had the beat only: drums, percussion sounds and breaks, and then added a bit of the synth bass to it. I liked the afro-beatish kind of raw sound of those elements and then Milton Gulli of Cacique '97 (@cacique97) - Portugal's leading afro-beat band - came to my mind. I sent him the beat to Maputo, where he now lives, and a few weeks later I was surprised by how much love he put back into his contribution: all the guitars, bass line and synths were played and recorded over the original beat. All I did afterwards was find the perfect vocal sample to complement Milton's input. I've been playing this track live with my Meu Kamba collective and it's a real banger.

While some might consider DES a newer artist, he has been on the scene as early as 2012 with his massive single on Moveltraxx, Jumpin Duck. With remixes from Lazy Ants, DJ Earl, Javier Estrada, Vatican Swag and Oui’wack (now Wiwek), Jumpin Duck was a heavy-hitter.   With his last release in 2014 on the Tunacat Label REBIRTH, DES now returns with Milan / Florence, a heavy Afro-bass EP on VOODOO REBEL inspired by a trip from his hometown Milan to VR’s headquarter Florence, with three original tracks and three remixes.   
The EP moves between DES’s banging electro house sound and VR’s more tropical, experimental sound, with remixes from global bass heavy-hitter’s Motin, the Italian Balera Favela ambassador prp, Tunacat’s Boogaloo & Bizt. The title track creates the right tension with a tribal African chant that transforms into a subdriven, powerful cumbia/breakbeat track. Ramen & Churches stands out as the most wild track on the EP, with a high-pitched synth and batucadas on a loopy chant. Florence / Milan is a slow moombahton track, where the Brazilian berimbau meets a digiridoo for a mystical, middle-Eastern feel. 
On the remix side, Motin gives us a superb remix of Florence / Milan, creating a minimal moombahton track. Prp’s remix of Ramen & Churches drives the dance floor into a middle-Eastern journey, with six vibe-heavy minutes of intense teleportation. Last but not least, Boogaloo & Bizt turn the original into a groovy house tune, driven by a hypnotic synth and an irresistible drum pattern.

After a successful 2017 which saw them release the debut EP, tour Poland with the climax reached at the renowned Unsound Festival and perform for the first time abroad in December, Polish-Angolan duo Lua Preta (Mentalcut + Supa Gia G) are back with a double single to kick off a new year! 

First up is 'Quero Mais' which brings a direct connection to Africa with the presence of another long-time Basy Tropikalne favourite - Morena Leraba from Lesotho. One of the continent's most distinctive voices famously appeared on Spoek Mathambo's album last year, also published a bunch of singles (including a collaboration with DJ Spoko) and now contributes his energetic verses to the track. The single marks also the first time we hear Supa Gia G in her full glory on rapping duties as she light-heartedly tells the story about her weekend preparations and plans. 

On the virtual flip-side there's gqom-inspired 'Somnilokwie' which already gained attention from the main man Branko himself who premiered it in his NTS Radio show. This instrumental beauty is another proof of Mentalcut's abilities to reinterpret African inspirations and current trends and take them to the next level with his modern electronic music additions.

BBE Music is proud to present the first official compilation of edits by Berlin DJ producer and label owner Daniel Haaksman, titled “Black Atlantica Edits”.
In 2004, Haaksman put Brazilian baile funk on the map with his seminal “Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats” compilation. Today he runs Man Recordings, Europe ́s leading tropical bass label, which has put out more than one hundred releases cultivating trans-continental music and sound dialogues between Europe, South America and Africa. For “Black Atlantica Edits”, Daniel presents ten dancefloor-friendly reworks, made both from vintage and current tracks, from all across the Americas and Africa. Featuring a diverse cast of international artists including Francis Bebey, CK Mann, Soul Brothers, Bonde Do Rôlé and Kaba Blon, this album explores the Afro-Latin diaspora, with edits that consistently grace the record crates of Gilles Peterson and Mr Scruff among others.
The album’s title refers to the Paul Gilroy's 1993 book “The Black Atlantic : Modernity and Double Consciousness”. In it Gilroy examines how the Black diasporic history of the Atlantic challenges art and knowledge to find new forms - with music being particularly important. Daniel Haaksman picked up on Gilroy ́s idea of the Black Atlantic as a transnational cultural realm when putting together his musical deconstructions and reworks for his “Black Atlantica Edits”. Daniel intentionally added an “a” to the “Atlantic” to point out to the non- English, Portuguese, Spanish or French speaking cultures that are part of the wider Black Atlantic space, e.g. Brazil and Angola, and to a further extent also countries like Peru, Cameroon or Mali, which all have been touched by the trans-continental dialogues and its hybrid culture.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson. BBE Music will also be looking to the future with more exciting original artist projects, plus merch collaborations events and more...
