It was hard curating an order for this week's list, mostly because of City Park, which started near the beginning and ended up near the end. From jangly pop (Dead Famous People), through Congolese Rumba (Lumingu Puati), and EDM (Giant Swan, and Working Men's Club) to Ambient (A Winged Victory for the Sullen), it's all in there, as usual. Pick of the week is a very close run thing between Lumingu Puati's "Davidi Pitie" (which reminds me a bit of Congolses legend, Franco) and lovely electronic pop with harmony vocals of The Leaf Library's "Hissing Waves", with the latter just (and only just) getting the nod.

DC Promo Tracks: Macchianera "No War"

Coming as one of two singles to be taken from Natalie Slade's Sampology produced album Molasses, Unquenchable Craving is an excellent slab of Australian neo-soul which highlights very well the album it is taken from.

With Sampology's production complementing Natalie's distinctive vocal style, Unquenchable Craving is a track where a heavy bass line and an infectious drum break laying the ground work for keys and vocals to interweave in a fusion of future soul, jazz and folk.

As well as Sampology on production duties the album, Molasses, also features additional production from Dan Kye along with The Dieyoungs on keys and Laneous on guitar to create an album which blends Antipodean and UK talent in a glorious ten track future soul feast.

With 'Molasses' releasing as a vinyl and digital 'Unquenchable Craving 'is an excellent showcase for the album and a compelling stand alone track in its own right.

From roots playing illegal raves in the South West to building up a cultured catalogue that bounces between house and garage, Medlar has long been part of the underground conversation. He has dropped a previous album and many innovative remixes and edits for the likes of Billy Cobham and Shirley Lites, worked in the studio and on stage with Afro legend Dele Sosimi and most recently released an album under his own name that collected myriad different sonic sketches from the past 15 years. 

Islands is an altogether different proposition that comes after establishing himself as a mix engineer and producer of other people's music. In that time, Medlar has honed his skills, learnt new tricks and grown more able to express himself in sound. The result is an album that explores a more electronic palette inspired by '80s fusion sounds whilst maintaining a loose, organic flow through his use of live instrumentation.

“The idea for the LP was for a collection of music which could sit alone as club tracks, but would work equally well as part of a whole.  The name Islands came from this, as there's some connecting ideas but the tracks sit independently in their own little sonic worlds. I took a lot of inspiration from early 80’s electronic music produced during early years of MIDI technology… proto house, jazz fusion, electronic disco and experimental ambient. I wanted to juxtapose some of these methods with more contemporary production and make something that's ultimately quite fun!” says Medlar of the record which could easily soundtrack a summer road trip.  Across 11 tracks, he blends old-school techniques like a fusion of live instruments, FM synthesis and MIDI-triggered vocal samples with more contemporary touches such as punchy, club-friendly drums and dub inspired, speaker-wobbling low end. The result is less reliant on samples than his previous works and makes for a perfect blend of retro authenticity and future freshness. 

Sun Spots (feat Sam Virdie) is a warm late night jazz house sound with evocative trumpet leads.

PREMIERE: Medlar "Sun Spots (feat Sam Virdie)" [Delusions Of Grandeur]

Presenting the first single taken from Gabriele Poso’s forthcoming compilation on Mr Bongo, Ritmo Italiano ‘Unspoken Sounds of Italian Tamburo’. Tony Cercola ‘Lumumba’ is just one of the mesmerising tracks that Sardinian multi-instrumentalist, percussionist and producer, Poso, has curated for this captivating new compilation. It’s an under-the-radar, percussive Italo-disco / proto-house dancer, originally landing on the Italian label Tendance in 1987.

“How can one not be overwhelmed by the energetic force of Tony Cercola? An incredible artist who emerged in the 1970s within the so-called Neapolitan Power movement,” Gabriele mentions. Cercola’s track ‘Lumumba’ showcases the vibrance of Italy’s cultural crossroads, with influences from the Mediterranean, Africa and Europe all rolled into this dynamic tribal whirlwind.

Built upon a foundation of gated snares, flavourful bongos and a driving synth pop bassline, ‘Lumumba’ oozes ‘80s dancefloor energy. Reverberating chords and deft keys are layered up in masterful fashion, as earworm chants and a hypnotising lead vocal draw you in deeper. It's a perfect crossover track for a leftfield electronic dancefloor set and is tailormade to ramp up the intensity when the time is right.

We’re thrilled to welcome Manzo Edits on our label’s cable mix series, dedicated to record labels and their owners. The new episode is curated by the Manzo Edits, a vinyl-only imprint started by Black Pomade in 2023, focused on cheeky, club-ready reworks that pack punch and groove without overcomplicating things. Each release features a tight selection of dubby edits, often rooted in obscure disco, Italian oddities, and sample-heavy funk cuts. While the label has deep roots in Italy and Portugal, support from DJs and collectors has been strong in many other places, including Japan and the UK. Manzo is fun, is raw, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it always delivers on the floor.

Dead Famous People new single 'Looking At Girls'

During their brief time together, New Zealand-to-UK transplants Dead Famous People released only nine songs spread over two 12” EPs. These sold next to nothing, the band split, disappeared from music.  Today, they’ve been largely forgotten.

It doesn’t seem like much of a story.

Yet front person Dons Savage is an unparalled talent, a savant of the perfect melody and lyrics which both touch and bite, a throwbook to the Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's of Brill Building pop, an instinctive penseuse besting the originators of the Riot Grrrl movement by responding to their conversations of rage and sexuality and finding a place in the world some years before the initial sparks of that particular revolution had even begun.

Dead Famous People originated in Auckland, New Zealand after Dons (then Donna) left an earlier combo upon finding she had no room in which to introduce her own songs. Gathering a few compatriots, Dead Famous People began playing out and were soon invited to make an EP for Flying Nun, label then in the early stages of subtle world takeover. Despite sharing a similarly breezy approach to pop arrangement (the light touches of organ, the wistful lyrical sensibility, the composition of each song a discrete story), they never entirely fitted in with their label mates (another all-female NZ group described Dead Famous People as “scary as hell and always looking for a fight”), the band decided to make the move to London to seek fame and fortune.

There they garnered favourable reviews and found themselves signed to Billy Bragg’s Utility label, by Bragg’s partner Peter Jenner, at one time or another the manager for Pink Floyd, Ian Dury and The Clash.

John Peel called the band “An important, exciting contribution to the often pallid world of contemporary pop” and granted them a session, Sounds described a song wherein “Donna Savage’s lovely, husky tones relate the tale of the girl who beats up boys in alleys and steals their leather jackets, while the band ride a pop merry-go-round reminiscent of their chums The Chills.”  David Cavanaugh wrote that “Dead Famous People are alive and unjustly obscure”, while other reviews mentioned Morrissey (“Donna . . . matches Morrissey for wit and exceeds him for melodic charm”), Pete Shelley (“A pop peer of The Buzzcock’s lead songwriter”), Elvis Presley (“Donna’s tougher than The King, without the sneer, but with the benefit of actually writing her own songs”) and other musical icons.

Despite this, homesick and unable to find a proper deal, the band fell apart. They recorded a series of final demos, posthumously released with faulty mastering.  Dons sang backup vocals on The Chills’ “Heavenly Pop Hit”, and eventually caught the attention of a pair of guys from Croydon starting a new act, Saint Etienne. Dons’ silky vocal delivery and knack for the perfect disaffected melody - not to mention her incongruous appearance – worked well with the pair’s lovingly deviant approach to pop music. Soon they asked her to become their vocalist. 

But soon after singing on the original version of their cover of the Field Mice’s “Kiss And Make Up” and a version of Gil Scott-Heron’s “Winter In America”, Dons received news that her mother was ill.  She returned to New Zealand and ended her musical activities for over twenty years . . . until Fire Records managed to locate her in Auckland, just a few months after Dons had begun writing again.

Looking At Girls is the first single release from Dead Famous People’s first real album, Harry.  Recorded at home and remixed by noted LA producer Dave Trumfio (Handsome Family, Billy Bragg & Wilco, American Music Club, Built To Spill, The Jesus and Mary Chain) in LA, Looking At Girls is a pure pop ode to life’s simple joys.

In 1979 the late Congolese musician Lumingu Zorro, protégé of Kinshasa’s legendary 60s band leader Dr Nico, recorded Mosese, his only pre-2000 solo album, for the Tabansi label- and this is it.

The first-ever reissue of one of West Africa’s best-kept rumba-soukous secrets- as well as being one of the most in-demand titles on Colombia’s booming Champeta sound system scene, where a rare record is protected as fiercely as on the Northern Soul or Jamaican sound system scenes, the label scratched off, the record hidden from view when not on the turntable.
Possibly one of the strongest and most consistent Congo dancefloor albums ever recorded perfectly balanced between voices, horns, guitars and percussion.
Which is why original copies of this all-time rumba rarity almost never reach the open market, being traded between Colombia’s champeta picoteros (sound system selectors) instead.

In Kinshasa they say ‘Miziki ezelaki eleng ndeko’- ‘Sweet music, brother!’. Roger that.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.
