Distance, Light and Sky are: Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts, Dirtmusic), Chantal Acda (Isbells, Sleepingdog) and Eric Thielemans (EARR ensemble).

"Distance, Light & Sky" - Not the title of a post new-age novel, nor the christmas wishes of some purple haired granny after a wizardly seasoned apple cake, nope. Chantal, Chris and Eric (we might as well get familiar right away) are happily lost together in this surrealistic menage a trois. Picture a carpet in some West-African nomad's tent or no, even better imagine that we see our 3 heroes picturing themselves on that imaginary carpet sharing stories, songs, visions and dance (one can always dream). To celebrate the moment and all those many moments and heroes before and after who are and were and will be there to celebrate many more moments and this we hope ad infinitum. Yes dear reader (are you still there?) - this is serious business! Therefore we must keep things light.

In a world on fire our 3 heroes decided to step down and become Distance, Light and Sky. Coming together through a desire to build and share an imaginative space for their songs and sounds, where there is a place to connect to a world family of storytellers, singers, griots, shamans, preachers, fools and players a space where time is never only now but past and future together in that now from that space now they are happy to present Casting Nets. Their first album. Recorded at Sono Studios near Prague during the spring of 2014, together with the kindred spirit and good soul Phill Brown behind the studio cockpit, this album came about like a spring breeze. Effortless (well, except for too many weird Czech greek salads and Schnitzels), graceful, as a result of a gentle sharing mood and generous spirits.

Prepare to be saved! Following their 2014 collaborative album 'Lo-Fi Classics’, multi-instrumentalist producer Mr Bird and astoundingly talented singer Greg Blackman revisit one of the record's highlights, alongside a trio of brand new remixes. 'Save Me' is a delightful slice of anthemic, gospel tinged soul-jazz, combining an irrepressible, toe-tapping groove with a truly memorable call and response vocal hook.

First up on remix duty, Renegades of Jazz takes 'Save Me' into funky breakbeat territory. Delivering on his promise to "bring the Jazz back to the dancefloor" the German producer's remix is bass-heavy and club-ready.

Next, Ill Advised drops a highly polished jazz version, smooth and seductive, with tight drums and a slick groove. 

The Paragons of Goodness close out the package with a scratchy, P Funk rework, making great use of horn stabs and adding a truly addictive bass-line all of their own.

The A side ‘Soul On Top’, is produced by Boca 45 and features New Zealander Louis Baker on vocals. Louis, based in Wellington, N.Z. has an emotive vocal tone that produces shades of Motown-era soul, which earned him a place at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in New York, when he was chosen out of 4000 applicants to take one of only 60 places. Currently gaining plaudits internationally for his sublime songwriting that has shades of J Dilla to Sly Stone, he has been touring in Europe as well as many shows and festivals down under. Boca 45 is a Bristolian legend who’s earned a mighty rep for his work with Andy Smith as Dynamo Productions, with Ben Salisbury as Dolman, with Gee Ealey as Malachai alongside his many solo records on various labels. Very much 2 talented artists that are successful in their own right who have found some common ground...

Louis was on tour in Europe in the spring of 2015 and played a show at The Sugar Factory in Amsterdam, whilst Boca was the guest DJ at the Wicked Jazz club night the same night. They end up meeting and get on brilliantly. The following day they reconvene on Red Light Radio, and having both been blown away with each others sets they decide that they must work together. A meeting of minds from different parts of the globe (UK-NZ) comes together in Amsterdam (that can't happen very often). Fast forward a couple of months and they start plotting Soul On Top - Scott makes the music / beats whilst Louis plays guitar, sings & plays bass. The result being an immediate slice of hip hop soul which will work as well on the dance floor as it will on the radio.

The B side features ‘Diegos Theme’, lifted from Boca's 2nd LP Vertigo Sounds which featured amongst other guest vocalists Kelvin Swaby from The Heavy.  D.T is a sampledelic slice of b-boy heaven - Boca say's that it's inspired by his football hero Diego Maradona - ‘I wanted to make a track which would suit his personality as well as being a soundtrack to his many breathtaking goals he scored throughout his career’. A classic slice of Boca and pressed on 45 for the very first time, it’s a lot more than just a lowly B side spin!

Every Trick In The Book’ is the new single from Bristol-based beat makers, The Allergies. True to form, they’ve whipped up a sun-kissed groover that’ll add a splash of colour to your day, whatever the weather. 

This A-side takes a vintage vocal sample from the ‘Queen of Rock n Roll’ herself – none other than Tina Turner! Yeah, you know ‘Private Dancer’, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, ‘We Don’t Need Another hero’ etc. That Tina Turner! Jeez Louise!

Well the guys have supplemented her pipes with loops from a long-forgotten Latin boogie 12”, and layers of live horns, cuts, drums, and FX, to give us a joyous mid-tempo groover that you’ll be humming for weeks.

While the flipside takes it back to ’91, as long-time Allergies collaborator, Andy Cooper, reworks his hero Big Daddy Kane’s classic ‘Nuff Respect’. 

This cover version takes the fast raps of the original, tweaks them, and fires them back over an explosive backdrop of scratches and b-boy beats. Respect due.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
