Behind Closed Doors: The Musical plunges its audience into a wild world of extremes: the holy and profane, the permissive and puritanical, the hilarious and heart wrenching. This provocative original musical follows the lives of a group of outcasts fighting for freedom and love in a stark world ruled by the Coalition, a powerful authoritarian regime that emerged as victor after a brutal civil war. In this world, civil liberty has been sacrificed for social order, and those who deviate from societal norms are hunted like animals. Confronted with oppressive regulation, citizens of every stripe find sanctuary together in an itinerant, clandestine burlesque club and brothel lurking in the shadows beneath the city.

Andrew, an aspiring young performer and bright-eyed student of the Coalition, finds himself unwittingly thrown into the belly of this bohemian haven. Noah, a veteran of the club, takes Andrew under his wing, and an eye-opening adventure through the many manifestations of love transpires. As Andrew’s involvement with the burlesque’s colorful cast of second-class citizens deepens, he begins to question his straight-laced upbringing and his relationship with the priggish Cambria. Meanwhile, General Lucas Sill, leader of the Coalition’s sinister arm of enforcement, is hot on the club’s trail, seeking to eliminate the deviant libertines it harbors before a “plague of immorality” unravels the fragile peace. A revolution that began as a murmur behind closed doors finally spills into the streets. In the battle between order and freewill that ensues, members of both sides must choose whether to sacrifice everything for the cause they believe in.

Development History:
The impetus for this show first came in 2008, in the midst of the devastation that followed the passing of Proposition 8, a law intended to make gay marriage illegal in the state of California. The idea remained in its infancy until Peter Berube met and established a creative partnership with Aaron Beaumont in 2010. The Behind Closed Doors story began development in late 2010, and in early 2011, Beaumont and Berube wrote the book, lyrics, and music. During the highly successful workshop run that followed in July 2011, Behind Closed Doors proved that the story, music, and characters will fill seats and elicit a powerful emotional response. Held at the historic Hayworth Theater in Los Angeles, the entire run sold out completely, each night ending in a standing ovation. Both in their 20s, Berube and Beaumont wrote, fundraised, and directed the production, thanks in no small part to the talented seven-member production team and 18-member cast, they assembled. The production was nominated for two Broadway World awards, and legendary 35x gold and platinum songwriter Marty Panzer proclaimed, “every song is a home run.”
