The 2014 BCFO line-up was a delight to work with! On this track are members of both BCFO1 & 2 ranging in age from 8–18. Some of the ‘graduates’ had been BCFO members for 8 & 9 years moving up through early forms of BCFO3 and BCFO2 and I was glad to record them. John Doyle taught me the first tune when we were paired up for a show at the Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Breton years ago. Sandy Cameron’s Jig was written by the late and very great BC fiddle icon, Bob Montgomery and our version of Red Onion was lifted from a 1960’s vinyl recording from another one of our BC heroes, the internationally recognized fiddle guru, Frankie Rodgers. Adrian had his hands full mixing this down from 80+ tracks featuring fiddles, guitar, piano, cajon, harp, glockenspiel, cellos, trumpet, sax, mandolin, tuba, trombone, drums, congas etc.

But we couldn’t just play the ‘ole’ tunes without giving them our own signature west coast twist, and this time it was to add a Calypso beat! The BCFO cellos and horns shine in this medley along with solid conga rhythm solos over the imposed St. Thomas melody featuring Mitch on the drum kit and Nick on congas.

The BC Fiddle Orchestra started in 1994 with a collection of Victoria, BC's finest young violin players under the direction of Daniel Lapp, a west-coast fiddler of some reknown. Season by season over these past many years the ensemble continues to nurture the city's most keen young musician's with weekly rehearsals, random recording sessions, youth exchanges, community dances, concerts and Daniel's ongoing tutelage of a varied curriculum delving into the world's great fiddle styles - Fiddling 101 or something to that effect. This collection of tunes are from some of these random recordings between 2008 and 2019. They will now be added to the library of previous BCFO recordings dating back to 1996 that include well over 100 tunes from around the world and in particular from BC's own repertoire of original tunes. BCFO alumni now number in the many dozens and continue to play these tunes on world stages and in living rooms and coffee houses around the world.
