Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens - Sinner

With the release of “Doppelganger” Spanish trio Jupiter Lion, are still in search of all things celestial, danceable and psychedelic. The single is a lead-in to the band’s follow up to 2013’s highly cinematic and proggy debut ‘Silver Mouth’, due out on BCore later this year.

“Doppelganger” is another long form voyage for the band, the gazing brilliance of vintage synths and high energy jazz fills is like a cruise in the galaxy of kraut-rock. It drones with the chirpy minimalism of Japan’s Nisennenmondai, yet experiments with quivering keys and fuzz that even recalls My Bloody Valentine. The songs climaxing solo of 8-bit walls of sound and perceptual distortion suggests the forthcoming sophomore will be traveling fearlessly into spacey unexplored territory. 

The bands analog approach to electronic music sets them apart in their native Valencia, a place where DJ nightlife reigns supreme and alternative pop is in short supply. Long stints in the studio as well as a death in their family has put the bands live performances on hold, but not without increasing requests for their live shows. This May marks their third appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, with tours as support for both Spectrum and Dead Skeletons already wrapped.

Alone as purveyors of a futurist style that avidly shirks the use of laptops for performance, Jupiter Lion are remarkably forward thinking for the human presence they embody with electronics. Living in the dystopian future of their own country’s paralyzed economy, the members see their cosmic journeys through song become their escape from a sci-fi world become real.

Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart.

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. It’s been giving goosebumps to club goers everywhere and with good reason — this is Âme at their finest, taking the song and extending it into an epic masterpiece that works wonders on a dancefloor while never losing the bewitching essence of the original.

MUS327 JJ AND THE A'S - Rhetoric of Trash LP

JJ And The A’s releases their first 12” aptly named “Rhetoric of Trash” - 12 songs exploring themes of post colonial moral decay and capitalist overconsumption, while still keeping it weird. This record explores a more subtle sound, with droning melodies and dissonant synths at times yet still evoking a classic SoCal punk style. You can get hints of influences from classic 80s punk like T.S.O.L. and REDD KROSS, with some old school hardcore stomp worming its way into a few songs even. This record captures a band clearly forging their own path thus making it hard to pinpoint the exact style, so have a listen.
