Continuing a strong start to the year, Deepwibe Underground welcomes Kamilo Sanclemente back to the label for his debut single. With a career that spans the better part of a decade, Colombian artist Kamilo Sanclemente has risen into one of his country's most beloved progressive house producers. The Cali resident has showcased his music via highly regarded imprints such as Anjunadeep, Replug and The Soundgarden, while earning continued support from the genre's top tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Having made his Deepwibe Underground debut last year with a well received remix of The Cobb's 'Reflection', Kamilo now returns to the label for his first single entitled 'Falling', alongside remixes from Forty Cats.

On ‘Falling’ Kamilo and Arbey craft a smooth slice of vocal-led progressive house. The Colombian’s production hallmarks are immediately evident with warm, mountainous bass anchoring hazy atmospheres and dreamy tonal themes. This colourful drive perfectly sets the stage for glowing vocal phrases to add further depth and a unique melancholic mood, particularly across the main break which ultimately spearheads a reflective finale.

Making her label debut and providing the lone interpretation of ‘Falling’ is Forty Cats. With well over a decade’s worth of DJ experience, Russian artist Christina Gavrilova aka Forty Cats has been a fixture of her country’s nightlife, sharing the stage with Jody Wisternoff, Nick Warren, Yotto, Dave Seaman and more. Christina’s production debut landed three years ago via 8bit Music, and in relatively short order the Russian artist has gone on to release projects via Lane 8’s This Never Happened, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Juicebox Music, Mango Alley and Sound Avenue. Now adding Deepwibe Underground to her resume, Forty Cats debuts on the label with a groovy rendition of ‘Falling’. The spirit of the Original version is well maintained here with a similar atmospheric disposition, but perhaps a stronger effects narrative and more of a traditional progressive groove backing the journey. Christina’s extensive experience as a DJ is evident as well, with a well crafted storyboard of peaks and valley’s throughout and timely use of the vocal elements without going too far. And for the less vocally inclined there is also a Dub Mix included as well. Exceptional work as usual from Forty Cats which caps off a standout second release of the year from Deepwibe Underground, a label who continues on an upwards trajectory. Highly recommended.

Firmly ensconced at underground dance’s top table, GMJ has matured into a powerful force. Returning to the Meanwhile imprint he founded with spiritual brother, Matter, “Empty to Fill” is an outstanding new offering.

An artist who has risen to prominence in both the live and production arenas, Gavin Griffin finds himself at the centre of an ever-vibrant Melbourne music scene. Home to a host of iconic names and a sound that helped define the progressive house genre in the 2000s, his GMJ moniker has continued to shape the modern progressive sound. With over 400 production credits to his name, a century alongside long-term partner, Matter, GMJ has seen his music adorn the likes of Balance Music, Anjunadeep and Proton Music.

Opening his solo account on Meanwhile with October 2020’s “Mood Medicine”, collaborative EPs with Matter have seen “Lost on Origin”, “The Path / Perfect Storm” and “Eldarin” light up the label, alongside remixes for Simos Tagias, Roger Martinez and Matter himself.

Opening with the title track, “Empty to Fill” is a chunky, subterranean groove-fuelled monster. Bristling with menacing vibe, lighter moments come courtesy of floating synth motifs that glide to the fore in a stripped back breakdown of delicate keys and gloriously delayed sequences. A pulsating white-noise riser heralds a return of the club-friendly groove and gorgeous melodic flow in the latter stages.

Continuing with the trademark rolling groove that watermarks the GMJ sound, “Door of Light” sparkles with arpeggiated backdrop and reverse-reverb vocal breaths. Evolving immaculately, stratified sonic layers flourish as they entwine together in organic fashion. Counterpoint motifs coruscate above pulsing white-noise swells as the aptly named track waxes and wanes in perfect dancefloor cadence, before reaching a rousing crescendo in an immersive sonic tapestry.

The final piece sees the popping percussive vibrancy of “Stage Flight” sit atop a stereo-panned bass groove. Building over its 7-minute duration, syncopated synth riffs lock tightly into the driving framework that reaches its culmination with a chorus of breathy pads and a drop back into the rolling bassline and mirrored synth sequence. The resultant track is a powerful snapshot straight out of the GMJ production playbook.

Chock full of rhythmic force and multi-faceted layers of sound, “Empty to Fill” displays a sparkling 24-carat hallmark of the GMJ sound.

GMJ - Stage Flight

Returning with a fourth edition of his popular series first debuting in September 2020, "Fantasy, Vol. 4" opens with the effervescent "Aeon" and its driving rhythmic backdrop. Before long, beautifully evolving pads are melded with a shimmering arpeggio and emotive bassline. Waxing and waning with dancefloor ease, it is a real showcase of the Belarusian's talent. Continuing, "Galactic Voices" immediately impresses with its bouncing bassline and heavy beat. White-noise infused pads add an open feel while a delayed synth lead sits perfectly alongside the bass key changes. The result is an aptly titled track that fizzes with energy. Belying, its chunky groove, "Nightshift" is a smooth and evocative affair that lilts effortlessly along with a parallel lead line cutting through the assembled array of delays and reverbs that shine at the breakdown. Hitting its stride once more, the powerful bass groove makes its presence felt strongly in the second half. In collaboration with Seyah, "The Last Day" is meticulously crafted track that bounces along with club-friendly credentials, textured pads and meandering synth lines. Mesmeric in its construction, intermittent laser-like effects break up the dramatic and hypnotic groove.

An artist of rare repute and impressive credentials, Namito is a renowned figure with his impressive work for the likes of Balance Music, Yoshitoshi and Sol Selectas. Indeed, the Iranian born producer has seen considerable success for Sabo's US imprint with the number one single, "Stone Flower", and its 2.5 million Spotify streams. Making his Proton Music debut, the Namito remix of "Poison" is a typically impressive interpretation with its hypnotic groove and perfectly cadenced keys. Making innovative use of Michael A's original components, a delicate arpeggio trips its way across the near 7-minute piece rising and falling with ease, joined by a delightfully melancholy string passage post breakdown.

A second remix sees Martina Mozzoni and Matias Villafañe make their Proton Music debut via their Alto Astral moniker. Already seeing their music find its way onto such esteemed imprints as 3rd Avenue, Movement Recordings and Balkan Connection, the duo's work for Particles has resulted in a pair of superb remixes for Juan Deminicis and Petar Dundov. Now debuting on Proton Music, the Alto Astral rework of "Fantasy" is a highly accomplished and polished interpretation that glistens and excites with an impeccable dancefloor groove. Building with vocal flourishes, it opens-up in an entirely new direction with a new vocal phrasing added to Michael A's instrumental original. A stunning breakdown adds further loquacious vocal passages as the track drops back into its rhythmic and bass-driven groove in the final stages.

A fourth outing with magical qualities sees Michael A reach new heights through "Fantasy, Vol. 4", ably assisted by remixes from Namito and Alto Astral.
