There’s very little information out there on èvia, which is part of their allure. What is known about them is that they’re based in New Zealand, they quietly release music via their Bandcamp subscription service and over the last few months they’ve caught the attention of some of the most respected names in ambient music, from Space Afrika to Special Guest DJ. 

It’s not surprising. The elusive producer may be from New Zealand but their music isn’t conceptually attached to any specific place. Like the videos they post on their YouTube channel, their songs are shrouded in a hazy fog of ambient electronics and amorphous, organic textures, similar in spirit to the nebulous sounds of artists on labels like Motion Ward, Experiences Ltd and sferic.

If you’re unfamiliar with èvia, this mix is a pretty perfect introduction to their world. The tracks suggest “the haziness of a distant memory” and evoke the same dreamlike quality as their music and videos. The recording moves through a heady blend of aquatic burblings, glistening textures and synth blips from the likes of perila, YABUJIN and Pontiac Streator. It also includes two particularly great forthcoming tracks by TIBSLC and èvia themselves.

Theory Therapy 25 comes from someone Dan and I have wanted to have on the series for a long-time: producer, label-owner and audio engineer Joseph Buchan aka Other Joe. 

Joe has been responsible for some of the most interesting electronic music to come out of Australia in the last year. He’s released two incredible albums on two fantastic labels—DJ Earl Grey’s Best Effort and Third Space’s Nice Setting—helped put out a number of releases on his .jpeg Artefacts label ranging from kosmische-influenced ambient to Lynchian-style pop, and mastered just about every noteworthy Australian release of the last 12 months. 

If you’re familiar with Joe though, you’ll also know that he has a penchant for jazz (something his Sanpo Disco mix with fellow ECM-enthusiast Nico Niquo can attest to) and it’s this sound which he’s gravitated towards for his Theory Therapy mix. His recording evokes a kind of warm, amber nostalgia, moving patiently through a number of beautiful and understated tracks from the likes of Terje Rypdal, Joseph Shabason and Lee Byung-Woo.

We kick spring off in Australia with a mix by Jordan Obarzanek, the Melbourne-based artist who makes music as Body Clock, OBA and runs the cassette label Happy Tapes. Their mix consists of tracks that have been helping the producer “during times of lockdown and life coming to a standstill”, touching on genres and styles including shoegaze, post-punk and minimalist electronic music.

Rather than transport — as his music as Body Clock and OBA often does so well — Jordan’s chosen tracks that “will hopefully help one feel more present in their own body/environment”. There’s a rough, grounded quality to their mix; it feels like the antithesis to the ethereal ambient we tend to gravitate towards during time of isolation, and I’m all the better for having heard it. It’s a huge pleasure to welcome Jordan on to the series. I’m such a big fan of their music — especially this gem on .jpeg Artefacts — and I had no idea I needed this mix until I pressed play. Hopefully you feel the same way about it.

Theory Therapy 29 is a heady bricolage of amorphous textures and unusually beautiful sounds by Naarm-based producer Jim Sellars aka Yunzero.

Fans of the Lillerne and .jpeg Artefacts affiliate will find a lot to love here. Sellars has somehow assembled 55 mesmerising tracks into a brief 45-minute mix. It feels very similar in vision to his recent collaboration Wall of Junk with friend and fellow producer Body Clock. Like that album, Sellars turns otherworldly samples and unconventional rhythms into captivating, mysterious soundscapes.

I get that a lot of great electronic music is intended to be transportive, but Sellars' music feels like its own self-contained world. I’m not really sure how they manage to make such disparate sources coalesce so well (for one, not many producers could pull off sampling Vin Diesel as they did on Blurry Ant) but that inexplicable quality is what keeps me returning to their brand of electronic music. I’m confident it’ll be a similar story with this mix.

Theory Therapy 29: Yunzero

"Od Mora Do Beli Grad is a mix that barely scratches the surface of the new wave movement that raged in Yugoslavia during the 70s and 80s. A constant experiment in reinterpreting, and often pre-empting, western pop music led to an eclectic scene of bands and artists constantly pushing envelopes and showcasing a brave new post-modernist culture. Also Zdravko Colic cause come on, it just bangs." - Lalić

Lalić - Od Mora Do Beli Grad

"Emerging from a small hoarder's den in Ho Chi Minh on the Antique strip with Reis, we had after what felt like hours of sorting through old dusty piles and racks of relics, accumulated several bags of various cassette and VHS tapes.

Everything on this mix is an amalgamation of those tapes which I have been reliving my experience in Vietnam with, in my cold, dark garage/studio in Melbourne ever since. I realized many of these cassettes were actually soundtracks to old Vietnamese films, where dialogue was often conveyed through a sort of melodic riffing with musical accompaniment that generally revolved around a couple of distinct scale systems, but with endlessly unique improvisational tangents, and deeply complex rhythmic structures. This genre of film I soon came to learn as "Cải lương" or "Reformed Opera" which blends modern spoken drama with traditional Southern folk music often in the form of "Vọng cổ" (which translates to "Longing For The Past"); a song and musical structure composed in the early 20th century during, and likely as a direct response to the French Colonial Period." - Body Clock
