I stayed up late to catch your call
but every time I found the tone
the signal dropped — then nothing showed

I said your name
Did you hear mine?
I mouthed it once
But it crossed no line

We tried to speak,
but the channel died
we tried to reach,
but the words slipped wide
your face, my voice,
all smoke and fire —

then we expired
