At the time Beach Season wrote San Junipero, the world had just been swept by a global pandemic. With lockdowns, quarantines, and isolation looming, the duo decided to look inwards for refuge from the growing storm. They began to explore ideas of mindfulness and manifestation, and conceptualized the idea of a personal, inner paradise that was all their own – an escape amidst the chaos and uncertainty around them. Inspired by the Black Mirror episode bearing the same name, they explored the blessings and pitfalls one may encounter when entertaining the construct of a utopia void of physical connection.
