The Gloaming's debut album, entitled simply The Gloaming, was produced by Thomas Bartlett and mixed by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne & St. Vincent). It was finished in the summer of 2013 during the build up to a series of sold out concerts at prestigious venues in London, Amsterdam, Paris & New York.

In early 2011, the five musicians first met to explore their collaboration at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland's County Westmeath, an hour northwest of Dublin. In August 2011 -- newly christened The Gloaming -- they went on their first Irish tour, including a sold out debut show at The National Concert Hall, Dublin. The sellout hints at the excitement surrounding their formation, as does the fact that Ireland's prime minister Edna Kenny was in attendance that night.

Most of The Gloaming's work is based on traditional Irish forms, the basic grammar of which is known as a "reel." "Reels" are performed in simple rhythmic meters (2/2 or 4/4) and repeated in simple configurations. They are the syntax of Irish music just as a "riddim" is to dub reggae and the "break" is to contemporary hip-hop.

Happily, what The Gloaming do with the syntax of Irish music is anything but simple nostalgia. Into these traditional structures, they introduce deep wells of personality and experience. Lyrics are drawn from the history of Irish literature, old and new. The music is played with the authority of virtuosos. The result is unclouded by sheen or hokey sentimentality. Instead, it's haunting and emotionally charged. It sounds ancient without being a mere reproduction.

This piece opens with ethereal, delicate tones, evoking the mysterious beauty of starlit skies. Soft, ambient sounds slowly build, like nebulae forming in the darkness, while lush harmonies create a feeling of floating weightlessly through galaxies.
The melody flows gently, with a serene yet powerful quality, resonating like light traveling across the cosmos. Subtle echoes and deep bass tones add a touch of the unknown, a hint of distant worlds just beyond reach. This is music that captures the soul of the universe—its beauty, its mystery, and its timeless, endless nature.

Following last year's critically acclaimed ‘Aching Bones’ EP, Nadine Shah has found a new home with R&S Records imprint Apollo, who will be releasing her brand new ‘Dreary Town’ EP on 15 April 2013. Picking up where her debut left off, ‘Dreary Town’ continues the emergence of a significant talent.

Hailing from the north east town of Whitburn, yet London based, this young artist's compositions lean towards the dramatic, with her smoky husky-hued vocals imbued with an understated unease, with a stage presence that belies her youthful age.

Lead track 'Dreary Town', with its plummeting melodies and anguished vocals, is the most personal of all three and the track that convinced producer Ben Hillier (The Horrors, Blur, Depeche Mode) to work with her upon hearing an early version uploaded to youtube. Closely followed by 'Bobby Heron' with creeping guitar strums driving a story about her great grandmothers only boy. “He died at sea” Nadine reveals, “my great gran was obviously distraught but even more so because she couldn't bury her little boy. There was this clairvoyant in our hometown, a blind guy everyone knew. She went to see him and he told her exactly where the body was. That night my great grandad went out in his fishing boat. Sure enough the body was where they'd been told it would be, and with a grappling hook he retrieved Bobby's body. My mam and Aunty always tell that story. I wrote the song for my mum really, I wanted to ensure that her tale lived on.”

The new EP is topped off with the singer's wonderfully sinister take on 'Cry Me A River.' Having begun singing it when she was a much younger jazz singer, Nadine just loved how you could “really twist the lyric and rather than sounding like a wounded woman you can be more of madwoman seeking revenge!”
