Here's a fun remake/remix project I figured I'd share as I figured somebody else might wanna hear it too. So here's a good long preview of the track I produced. Always loved this beat by Pal Joey, for the one and only KRS-ONE who used that beat for "Love's Gonna Get'cha" while representing Boogie Down Productions. This is is modern West Coast-ish style spin on an N.Y. classic, partially inspired by the E-40 "Function" beat in the previous video. My remix here will never touch the original though. It's basically to show how much styles of beats change over the years but in some way stay the same.

This remake project started for me back in late December of 2003, Not sure who produced a version from TT samples but it was shared by Arena Taping and Leaf via YouTube. I took my stab at reproducing it and cleaning up the samples I heard, rebuilt the beat and reworked my stems from my "Is Cooking (No Way Out 2003)" remake project. I did what I could to enforce the backing melody a bit (with horns and saw synths) based on what I heard from the samples on the net.

This preview is released with no intended copyright infringement, but appreciation for the work of Jim Johnston. My remake will never be 100% accurate, so don't bother with your laundry list of mistakes and missed pieces you heard in comparison to the samples you got from a guy who accessed all Jim's work and decides to play games with the entire community. Just enjoy what you hear from me.

Beast - "Feed Dead Man More" (Undertaker + Ryback Mashup )

Mos Def has always been one of my favorite lyrical artists. Dug through some of his discography recently and heard a joint so basic, but a nice chord cycle in the hook which uses the same chord in different keys. "Got" is the name of the track. Great lyrical concept behind the track as well. 

Here, I remade/remixed the track using drum sounds to mock a beat loop that DJ's like DJ Premier made famous. And put an Illmind/Dert/Dilla type of twist on it.

Chorus chord cycle and "Got" vocal samples are from the original track Mos Def did.

There are a couple Dert samples in there too.

This is only a clipped demo version. Added some effects to it to make it sound live at first.

When I heard Kendrick's style of rapping, parts of it reminded me of Suga Free's frantic, rapid-fire style. So I knew what I had to do....Mix his lyrics, and some of Mustard's sampling work with a classic DJ Quik beat. Hope y'all enjoy, because I liked how this idea came together while enjoying a generational diss track.

Beast "A Nice Day" (2014) [Jim Johnston Mankind Remix]

This 2-piece combination of beats is a tribute to the one and only Warren G, who helped pioneer G-Funk as a sub-genre of Hip-Hop on the West Coast. Two tracks from Warren's "Regulate" album that caught my ear, are remixed into a melodic-switch beat concept.

I felt these tracks well enough to put my twist on them for a modern sound. My favorite is part 2, which I sprinkle a little bit of "Nobody Does It Better" twinkling saw synths on top while borrowing the "Curious" melody from Midnight Star. Of course, some other west coast samples too, with some classic sample tracing from Mtume. One of my favorite projects of 2022 (while I was still getting my degree), figured I'd finally share.

Ode To G-Funk

The song "Natural High" by Bloodstone always hit me a certain way, especially in sync with how the Jackie Brown movie plays out where Max becomes infatuated with Jackie. So I wanted to find the original song and flip it because it was so mellow and smooth. I listened around to covers and looked for beats that sampled the song, but heard nothing like what I had in my head and I don't think I knew of anybody touching that song for any beats...which was a good sign....so I put this together and it was fun to chop things up after splitting the Bloodstone and Honey Dripper songs into stems.

I wanted a 90s J-Cole type vibe so for drums, I went with a classic rhythm from the Honey Drippers, along with a classic filtered Dilla loop from "CB4", and chopped up the Bloodstone song to hit with that. Later on, decided to add vocal adlibs from both songs. I like how my basic intro/verse idea came out, but I wanted to change it up a little, so I added the "Natural High" change ups and found an-off throwing way to bring it back to the top. This is only a snippett. If you'd like to buy this beat,be my guest, but vibing to it is great too.

Beast 2009 Flashback - Sting "Crow" Remix

Considering what happened in the past year between Kendrick and Drake, I figured I'd finally share a beat I did leading up to Summer break a couple years ago. There's a snippet of another beat that was sort of a part two or alternate, which I call "Dilla Blvd." I made that 1st blended beat having no clue Kendrick vs Drake would ever come to the explosive level that it did.

"Love Language" is basically "Champagne Poetry" (one of the only Drake beats I like) but with an actual beat. Ironically enough, the trap claps, snares and hats come from "N95." This is sprinkled in with a melodies from Loose Ends classic. Drake used Masego's "Navajo" for the song so it's credited below.

Love Language [Navajo x N95] (prod. Beast)

One of my favorite beats ever growing up in the 90's.

From MC Hammer's extended version of "Sultry Funk". (a track that was made into a G-Funk spin off of Cameo's "Back and Forth")

This is my rearranged version to reconstruct the instrumental version of the original track released on Hammer's "Inside Out" album of 1995.

Original theme song composed by Jim Johnston, entitled "Lyin' King" which was used by the late/underrated Nelson Frazier and released on WWF Full Metal and used in 1995/6.

This is just a random flip/cover idea i had a long time ago when going through my theme music collection. It has a real 90's hip hop sound to it for sure. Drum pattern idea comes from "Fall In Love", produced by J-Dilla. The bells in your left ear give you a slight "Brown Sugar" sound. Infact, there are a few guitar samples from a famous D'Angelo joint.
Siren samples come from a few different recorders on youtube.
Including an Oklahoma Whelen.

Here's my random mix of the classic lyrical prowess of Big Daddy Kane with an epic beat by J Dilla.
I found the vocal track of "How U Get a Record Deal" and had to stick it on another beat as soon as I heard it. This is the first idea to come to mind.

Mixed some stuff around, extended some parts, chopped some parts out and added some scratches from another Dilla beat...the usual hip hop thing.

The Nation Of Domination - "Power" (V4) [Remastering Demo]

This is my remix of the "Dead Man"/"You're Gonna Pay" concept Jim Johnston had  for the Undertaker from May to September 2002. 
I sampled the basic drums from a Dilla classic and went from there. Basic guitar samples come from both the "Dead Man" and "You're Gonna Pay" themes. (copyright to Jim Johnston and WWE circa 2002) Solo guitar parts were played by Jean and rearranged by me.  So, this is basically a concept as if J Dilla turned heel. Enjoy.

"Brawl for All (Event Theme)" [Uncaged VII Remastering Demo]

Here's my remake of the instrumental, made by Mike Will Made It, for Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE." I employed the same strategy I use for my remakes for WWE theme music: make it sound as close as possible.
Tried to match it the best I could to what I heard in the track, including the looping, the piano riff and had to reduce sound for certain parts to make. Also, I added the pounding effect for every 1st, 5th and 7th bar of every time the beat loops. The synth had to be mastered a certain way from my vocal cutting so it could fit. Happy how this turned out.
