Continuing the theme of community collaboration sparked by Hodge and Simo Cell’s recent 12”, Livity Sound presents the first joint works by Azu Tiwaline and Al Wootton. While they come from distinct settings (Azu in the Tunisian desert, Al in London’s urban sprawl), their music shares a similar affinity for intricate percussion and dub-informed space.
The four tracks on LIVITY052 deal in a variety of rhythms and tempos, veering from the propulsive intensity of ‘Blue Dub’ to the sparse, skipping 2-step framework of ‘Light Transmission’. Azu and Al’s refined, detailed approach blurs the lines between electronic sound design and earthy sonics, resulting in dynamic drum tracks loaded with weighty atmospherics and unrelenting tension.

Following the resounding success of their collaborative EP 'Fluids in Motion' released last June on @livity-sound, @azu-tiwaline and @forest-drive-west are once again joining forces to deliver an auditory experience that transcends the ordinary. This partnership, which has already captivated the electronic music community, is set to reach new heights as the two artists blend their unique styles.

Azu Tiwaline, known for her deep, meditative soundscapes that draw from the rich musical traditions of the Sahara, and Forest Drive West, a producer whose work is characterized by its intricate rhythms and immersive textures, have proven to be a perfect match. Their previous collaboration was praised for its ability to seamlessly merge the organic with the synthetic, creating tracks that are both grounded in nature and forward-thinking in their approach to techno and bass music.

Forest Drive West's reinterpretation of "Night In Palmtree" takes us deep into the palm grove for a night inhabited by spirits for a tribal and hypnotic techno banger.

The track is a testament to the duo's ability to create music that is not only meant to be heard but to be felt deeply. It's a true exploration of the unknown, a journey that takes you far beyond the dancefloor and into a realm where time and space seem to dissolve. The pulsating beats and atmospheric layers draw you in, wrapping you in a cocoon of sound that is both tribal and otherworldly.

Azu Tiwaline and Kangding Ray share the same love and talent for dub techno. When she contacted him to remix a track from her album, Kangding Ray was free to choose the track. He immediately chose Reptilian Waves and transformed it into a more dubby and dancefloor version for dub techno lovers the world over.

Beastwars - Realms

Beastwars are the result of a barbaric and brutal world sliding into the abyss. When we see war and disaster surrounding us on all sides. When half-truths and hidden agendas lurk behind every act of the world’s eroding empires. And when all these things are channelled into righteous and commanding music.

 Music that embodies the apocalyptic feeling of these end times - primal, hypnotic, and just plain fucking heavy. The fire and the fury acknowledge gloomy futures while simultaneously offering a temporary escape from our grim present.

 On this, their first record, Beastwars distil all these things into a sequence of songs that unfolds like the most of hellish of headlines. Kill the volume on the stream of airstrikes, calamities and mankind’s meltdowns rolling across your television screen and you’ll discover the band’s heavy howls create an eerily apocalyptic soundtrack to the events of the day.

 There are familiar elements in what Beastwars do - this is the sound of four people with lungs, guitars and drums after all. You can throw names like The Jesus Lizard, Black Sabbath and Kyuss around, but that doesn’t entirely sum things up. This is metal of mettle born from the most bestial characteristics.

 The word’s been getting out about the potency of their live shows - something Beastwars have captured on record in heightened fidelity.

 This is the product of two very different environments. Recorded with Dale Cotton (HDU, Dimmer, Die! Die! Die!) in four and half of the greyest Dunedin winter days before being sent to sunny California to be mastered by John Golden (Melvins, Sonic Youth, Faith No More, High on Fire). This untitled debut displays an instinct for furious moods and doom-laden dynamics.

 The music is wrapped in the mind-melting artwork of Weta Workshop conceptual designer Nick Keller. Keller has lent his vision to Narnia, Avatar and The Hobbit and now, for Beastwars, has created imagery so otherworldly it perfectly reflects the music within. His two huge oil paintings presented on gatefold vinyl give the listener something tangible to clutch as the music inside threatens to take you to the world it depicts.

 Beastwars is released on LP, CD and Digitally Monday 9th May 2011 through Destroy Records. The band will be playing shows throughout New Zealand in May.
