This CALI Weed Got Me PHONKED-UP PT II

Library/production music is generally sought-after in the form of LPs from the mid-60s to early 80s. The tracks in this mix come from the relatively unloved CD releases of library music from the late 80s and early 90s. I found these CDs in French thrift shops and flea markets, mostly for about 50 cents a piece, never more than a euro. Instrumental neo-jazz, neo-rock, neo-synth, neo-classical, neo-funk, neo-fusion, neo-ambient, neo-industrial—an analytical rehashing of the preceding two decades of music, all filtered through the era’s landmark digital synthesizers and rapidly developing sequencing and sampling capabilities. Almost all sounds in this mix are synthesized, apart from some saxes, a few guitars, and perhaps a real Rhodes. More fun and less atmospheric than you might think. CDM is the main publisher celebrated here, with the compositions of Olivier Joos, Gilles Laurent, J-P Voindrot, and Eric Fauret, among others, with a few British productions mixed in as well. -NUMUW (aka Nate Davis / Unchained)

Jeffrey Franca (ETHNO) is the drummer and musical director for Thievery Corporation and has a full lifetime of touring and influences under his belt.  His unique approach on global bass music incorporates all of these influences from around the world into a special blend of sounds.  We are excited for what is next for this legend and his project ETHNO.

The Journey opens the EP with panning female vocal chants, flutes and synths filling the air and painting a beautiful soundscape.  It drops into flowing bass and beautiful stabby synths, epicly building into a larger drop incorporating a new lead and a flow beat. Awake again (ft. Celestine) slows down the tempo and starts with lush string instruments and beautiful vocals that immediately teleport us to another world.  Building on top with catchy electronic synth leads and a catchy chorus, this one can put anyone in a good mood. Exhale has a beautiful downtempo intro and slowly brings in electronic leads and similar sounds to the previous tracks, maintaining the same vibe yet showing a different side to the project.  Leaf Water opens with beautiful analog synth stabs and vocal chops, echoing around the soundscape and immediately enchanting the listener. Slowly building and layering new ideas, this meditative beat brings in heavier bright synths that brings us back to the old school electronic music sound.  My Personality (ft. Born-I) switches it up and brings a higher energy groove and brings in iconic rapper Born-I.  Focusing more on the beat and rap than the synths and other ideas, while still incorporating the sound and style that ETHNO has created for this release.  A perfect end to the release that leaves us wanting more.

For six months, he dedicated his full mental capacity to create a collection of work that steers listeners through a rollercoaster of emotion. After meticulously crafting compositions that embody all his production styles and techniques from the past decade, he is now ready to debut his album, Full Circle, available via Gravitas Recordings. Behold the enthralling universe of Full Circle as his signature violin tethers melodic elements together to transport listeners to all corners of the globe.



Contra Scandal encourages listeners to elevate their mind and lose their fear as “Immersion” initiates powerful bass crescendos and liquid basslines. Venture onto a daring “Escapade” as mysterious strings lure travellers into a cavern of psychedelic oscillations. “Mile High Livin’” fondly reflects on the exuberant nightlife of Colorado, expressed through attention-grabbing hip hop vocals and versatile bass backdrops. Atmospheres slow down in “A Calling” as remote vocals illustrate Contra Scandal’s experience growing up an only child in the Redwoods of Kings Mountain, California. Voyagers shortly encounter a “Snake Charmer,” who forewarns those who attempt to harm him. Featuring Spirah’s mesmerizing vocals, the two reflect on past faults, vowing to stay awake and learn the “Hard Way.” For the title track, Contra Scandal brings passengers “Full Circle” through deep, dark, and dynamic low end.
