Gentle Suggestions to Gentle Listeners from Hard Core Rappers Beat Salad: LISTEN Be4 READING!

This song sparked an intense debate amongst Beat Salad, particularly around the line “this is hip hop to me cause I’m white.”  Did this line highlight the cultural appropriation of African-American culture in an ironic way, or attack well-meaning white people who love hip hop music?  Or both?  Did it explore the enjoyment of an art form for its aesthetic attributes (rhyming over beats, a voice that’s tough) and ignore its cultural importance (expression, connection, exploration, and sharing a viewpoint that is underrepresented in mainstream America)?  Did it take the naming of whiteness that Macklemore did with song “White Privilege” and Eminem on “White America” and turn it on its head?  Or....Ahhh shit...YOU be the judge.

Battle Rap 4 (Lunch), and sometimes called Cattle Rap 4, was also written around 2012 though uses a beat made by Word Salad in early 2021, it was in fact the first beat he made on his new MIDI. The rhythm and many lyrics are clearly modeled after the first battle rap though this time the song explores our diet and impact on the world and animals. It also features assume additional writing and rapping by MRKL. The classic argument of the vegetarian versus the meat eater is transformed into the battle rap.

Battle Rap 3D(eath) was written circa 2012 but uses a beat produced by Word Salad in early 2021. The fans of old school hip hop will notice the late '80s influence on the song. This is the first battle rap song produced by Word Salad and the first to feature more rapping by MRKL, both of which will continue into future battle raps. This composition delves deep into the meaning of friendship, authenticity, and life itself.

Battle Rap Too came soon after though eventually it employed two beats and thus became Battle Rap 2 (Beats). Again the lyrics were written and performed by Word Salad and both beats produced by MRKL. This one continues the tradition of the first battle rap as a fun but nonetheless fairly formulaic song. After this Beat Salad took a sharp left turn toward the experimental and strange.

The first battle rap, or Battle Rap 1, soon to be rechristened Battle Rap Won, was written and recorded circa 2010. Ahhhh, what a different time it was in the world as well as to be in one's twenties. This was the beginning of their foray into battle raps and though it doesn't disappoint, our antiquated mixing techniques are somewhat obvious. Though I hope that to you kind listeners the spirit of the track will come through. The lyrics to this song were composed and performed by WORD SALAD, the beat produced by MRKL who also put in some background vocals.

Battle Rap (sur)5, with the full title being Battle Rap (sur)5; Best Rapper Alive; Battle Rap Lost; One Sunday Morning: a conversation with a piece of cheese. Produced by MRKL circa 2011, recently after watching the film Network and written by WORD SALAD circa 2012. In 2022 the track was reworked with an entire verse written and performed by MRKL as well as vocals written and performed by KARENNA SLADE. Also features Dayv in a Cayv. It explores the deep questions of existence and really, what else is there to say than that? CHEEZY CHUCK makes an appearance as the self-proclaimed best rapping piece of cheese and it's difficult to argue with that. Though one may notice that most of his boasts have to do with how much humans enjoy him as opposed to his intrinsic goodness as a piece of cheese. Mastered by PASQUALE.
